Subways in a shower or 8x10s?
Comments (5)Thanks for the compliments. Especially you, Bill--that's really saying something as I've long admired a lot of your work that I've seen posted on GW--even wished you were local for me & darn near emailed you to see if I could fly you here. To answer the questions... The tiles on the bottom are 10x13, the subways are 3x6 and the decorative listellos are 2x10. The floor of the shower is made up of the mosaic Renaissance pattern in grigio and trimmed with 3x10 cuts of the 10x13 tiles. The tile is Florida Tile's Renaissance pattern in the grigio color and the listello is the Gold Sistene in the same pattern. The threshold and the top of the pony wall are marble sills in an ivory color. Grout is Pearl. We also used the decorative listellos as the transition strips on the floor between the bedroom and bath and the closet and bath. Here's a pic of the transition: How did we decide on this particular design? After too many disappointing tile stores and kitchen/bath designers to count, I finally found the Florida Tile rep. He was great--he listened to what I said my vision of the spaces were and then only showed me tile that worked with my vision. He was the one who drew a couple different variations of the tile on the shower walls and this configuration was the one that 'Wowed' me. It was as simple as that--a picture is truly worth a 1,000 words--and then some. For a different perspective, here's a look at DS2's bath using all "extra large subways" in a brick pattern. These are 9x18s in Florida Tile's Pristine pattern in the alabaster color. Simple yet elegant and super easy & quick to install. Comments (47)Hi all, Thanks for your honest feedback on the pictures I posted. I just don't know what to do. The taupe tiles on the board do come in the 2.5 x 5 size, but they may be too dark for my kitchen. Marble mini-brick subway tiles (similar to Alku's) look to white/cool for the granite. I will also continue to hunt for a soft gray field tile to see if that would work. I can see what you mean about some of the accent tiles looking blue. I am thinking that instead of multicolor accent tiles I posted, I might go with a single color (a grayish glass tile like the ones on the sample board. By the way, those glass tiles on the board are about $130/ft - rather ridiculous, if you ask me). Charlikin, no decision yet on the paint. I am leaning towards BM's Wedgewood Gray, which is slightly darker than what I currently have in the dining area. Goodness, I just realized that that paint color is more grayish blue and not green at all! Good luck with your search! OK, it looks like I am back to square one for paint colors! By the way, DH is actually color-blind, so he is no help at all! I will continue my search and will let you know what I find! Thanks again!...See MoreShow me your subway tile!
Comments (67)Sorry about the slow reply. I have interenet issues in my new house :( Anyhoo, the honey colored tiles above are from Status Ceramics, a Seattle company. All of their tiles are custom or, hand made, so you get the glaze variations etc. But that's why I loved them. While they are wide set, they are perfect for a super close line as well. I actually debated both options. Our tile guy (a tile snob if you have ever met one LOL) loved the quality and was impressed at the efforts they made on the tile body as well as the glaze so that they were really perfect for any type of application. They do a bullnose as well as a half tile for applications like mine that end in the open. Because it's a hand painted ceramic, you can't put a cut end out in the open because the finish would not be baked through the tile (so you'd see a raw edge). My first order with them was before they had a "honey" color which added painfully to the cost, but they ended up producing that color when we did the second order (contractor issues) so the price went down significantly. I wish I could use status tiles in this house but we are sticking to historically appropriate so I have to look elsewhere. But I would recommend them to anyone! By the way, for those considering crackle finish, you do have to apply a sealer on those tiles. We have only done it once in 3 years and it's in perfect shape, but it's something I didn't know when I was tile shopping....See Moregrout drying---should I wait to post pix of finished bs?
Comments (39)Oh it's beautiful Annsch! I love the herringbone, it adds so much interest, so amazingly well put together. I bet you are counting down the hours now. Wish we had a GW countdown clock! Can't wait to see it after the counters go in tomorrow. Congrats!...See Morelive_wire_oak
