House jewelry

I had the good fortune recently to run across what I call house jewelry...door knobs, drawer pulls, light switch plates, all those little things that add a bit of glitz to the house.

I found two vintage glass door knob sets, one is a light amethyst color, and it's going on the ensuite door. I also bought a solid, beautifully patina'd brass doorknob that will go on the guest bath door. Clear glass knobs will go on the two front bedroom doors.

Since they're vintage, they needed estucheons, and I ran across a stash of deco style old estucheons. They've got their original patina, too...nothing like authentic vintage goodies I say!

Since my house is uber-ecclectic, and lacks any real architecutural style (tho it does have some early 50's flare such as HW floors, builtins and coved ceilings in the DR and LR) the jewelry is just a fun touch.

Any one else do house jewelry?

Can one assume you already have the ceiling medallions and 10+" of crown moulding? I love the general term 'house jewelry' and sign me up. I adore all the little details that give a house some character. My house is 21 Century Tract Home and came with zero personality. I think house jewelry is what pulls it out of the sea of sameness.

For me it's all in the details, it makes a house unique. I would rather have a small house with lots of detail than an huge plain house.

Hey all...please let me know if you are possibly waiting on a trade from me that was supposedly sent out but you haven't rec'd...I was just informed about this from someone and, to make a long story short, over the last two months I have had thefts of mailed packages. No one was really trying to steal seeds, but I have a home based jewelry business and have mailed packages from home for a long time...until recently. I had problems and even filed a report with my post office & sherrif's office....and no longer mail from home. So, someone got their hands on a trade envelope of seeds, thinking it was jewelry...ha ha on them. Anyhow...I want to make anything good that may have gone bad, so PLEASE let me know if you are still waiting on me and haven't heard anything!!! PLEASE!!!! Thanks everyone. For most things it looks like I can use simple household cleaners that I have on hand. However I have a diamond cut gold & silver necklace and several intricate silver mesh necklaces and a silver cloth only takes care of the top surface. When I finish wiping the surface I can see tarnish in the crevices. I will try the dawn dishwashing soap or Jannie's solution. I was rather hoping for a little less elbow grease since I have a fair number of pieces to do but perhaps this is the safest. I will let you know how it works.

Years ago when I first started making jewelry I took it to a flea market where I had sold handmade dolls and other things for a year or two. As we all know our talents do improve with experience. One day two older ladies approached my table, stood there looking, and one says loudly to the other..."This stuff doesn't sell" I wanted to say..."Lady, you should have kept on walking" Where you sell and who you sell to makes a world of difference. I try not to give my work away but I do try to keep my prices within reasonable reach to most people. For this same reason I choose materials that can reflect that. Much of my work is valuable because of the talent and time I have invested in them. Iif you want sterling expect to pay for sterling. A co-worker once said..."You are making a killing on this stuff" This was after I had sold her a necklace and earrings set for $8.00!!! We just have to understand that you cannot please everyone. My theory is..."If you like it....buy it......if not keep walking. I love my crafts or else I would not do them.

Well, this is late to the show, but your agent can request that he/she attend all showings (or someone from the office - that represents you). If he/she is really busy this can be a problem, but I see it all the time around here. It is quite normal for sellers to only show when their agent is present for the showing - no lockbox. Vacant homes don't have this requirement. But I will ditto the advice to lock up your jewelry, small valuables and electronics, all medications, keys to anything, paperwork with personal identification on it (bank statements, etc), ensure your computers have login/password on them. Take a few minutes to scour your house like an identity thief or a smart petty thief (i.e. kids).

I Love House jewelry ! As a matter of fact my favorite store when shopping for hardware advertises as "Jewelry for Your Home!" It can be ridiculously priced! I could go crazy in their showroom. Oh My!

I love this stuff, too. My house is a very traditional 1920s center-entrance colonial. Ho hum. So every so often I do something a little wacky to it. On our mudroom closet doors, which just pull open without any sort of latch mechanism, I used great big glass, flower-shaped cabinet knobs from Anthropologie. People comment on them all the time.

Great idea sueb20! I have been wanting to replace doorknobs on the double doors to laundry room. They don't latch shut, so your idea would probably work. I am so glad I read this thread! Where did you find yours? Thanks!
