I want to add an additional question:
Do you think beds look funny with only a headboard on them? I could also get a low foot board (just as tall as the mattress).

I like the first one best. It's got charm and should make it through the years as your DD matures.

But have you checked Craigslist? It's amazing what you can find there for pennies on the dollar, including individual pieces or whole bedroom sets. Thrift stores often have loads of kids' headboards. Sand out the glitches, add some fresh white paint and voila! Your DH will love you for saving $ and maybe you can justify something else your heart desires with what you saved?

I've also seen adorable faux headboards painted on walls, tapestries or cute fabric hung as a headboard, and even an old door used. You can grab a piece of plywood, jigsaw the top to be cute, glue foam on it, and cover it with your favorite fabric and a staple gun, even button tufting it if you like. Or, run fabric up the wall, and canopy it over the bed with decorated dowels or curtain rods.

I don't know her age, but little girls (and even some big ones) love canopies. You can make a crown type canopy with fabric and just a little wood and moulding. I've even seen those hung from a pretty napkin holder or pot rack. You can also swag fabric through big rings hung from the ceiling.

How about googling "creative headboard" and "make canopy" and a few choice words like that in Images? The possibilities are really endless and the trend is to get away from matching furniture sets.

Just some thoughts.

love all the ideas. One thing I am unsure of is if my 2 girls will at some point share a room. Right now they are only 3 and 1 so we have a year or two before the baby even goes into a twin bed but if they do share (so I can use the other room as a playroom) I would need to find 2 headboards the same, which makes CL or thrift store an issue.

I definitely don't think it looks funny with just the headboard. My son's bed has a footboard and I wish it didn't. Now that he's a teenager and his friends are hanging out in his room playing video games, it would be nice if they could sit on the end of the bed.

You don't really have to have the two headboards be the same. If they're both painted white that should be good enough. If you're going to make something, just buy enuf fabric to make another when/if the time comes, or change it then.

I love the first one for a little girl and it will look great without a footboard just with that pretty headboard by itself. It will look even prettier if you have an eyelet bedskirt or some kind of bedskirt that is white.

I have a bed with an Rustic Ivory Iron Headboard with no footboard due to the size of my bedroom and I am very happy I chose no footboard to make my room appear smaller with less walking room.

If I had a big bedroom, I would love a footboard.

I also had a Stanley Fiasco and despite missing the styling of the Cottage Revival Furniture (I loved the bun feet and beadboard sides that were really veneered wood over particle board but pretty.... I do not miss the mismatched furniture, peeling paint, spintered and chipped runner, holes in back of bureaus, and many other quality control issues) , I love the fact that my solid Maple Wood Durham Furniture (Royal Cottage in Sand White) came to me in such wonderful shape and MATCHING and did not waste 2 weeks of my time due to the poor quality control from Stanley and the Kearny, NJ store actually allowing furniture that was so mismatched in color with so much damage to be delivered to my home.

I sure wish I found my new retail store in Flemington, NJ first since I am sure (based on what they told me and seeing how wonderful they were with my Durham Delivery) they would have never let furniture with that quality enter my home based on what they have told me when I showed them the pictures of the Stanley Furniture.

Also The Durham furniture was ready in 6 weeks rather than 11 weeks like the Stanley Furniture.
