DD's bedroom chandelier Help (pics)

You all are the best at seeing what is needed in a room so I am asking for help choosing an overhead light (chandelier) for my DD's bedroom.

She chose the headboard, the quilt, the pillows, and the paint (BM's Bali). She also wanted her great grandmother's vanity in her room along with an antique door that came from great grandma's closet. My grandfather made the closet and it was so large we couldn't get it out of the basement so we took the door off. It is solid mahogany.

Anyway, it is her shabby chic idea of a bedroom. I want to put an overhead light in (there is a spot for a ceiling fan but it is not needed in that room) but would prefer something that would go with the headboard. I really don't want anything crystally in there. The ceiling is 9 feet and the room measures 12x14. It is on the northeast side of the house so it doesn't get a lot of light.

I can imagine a simple chandelier, black to match the headboard, and with shades to match the shades on the lamps beside the bed. It's easy to spray paint a lighting fixture, and they sell shades you can cover in any fabric you like, should you care to do this on a budget.

Oceanna - thank you for your suggestion to use matching shades - I hadn't thought of that!!

I was looking at this one Hinkley chandelier that hangs down 17.5" and is 12.5" wide. It is black wrought iron with the same curley Q's as the headboard. I really like it but not the price. It is in the Casa Old Black family.

I am just wondering how low is too low in that room? Would something hanging 24 inches down be too low?

I'm not a real fan of the fabrics you've posted because they don't seem to have anything in common with what you already have. What do you mean by pink on pink? Is it a print or a solid? Can you post a picture of it? If it's a solid, one of these might work. However, what you really may want to consider is to use one of the fabrics from the quilt for the body of your draping, like the pink and then boarder it with either a new fabric that has all the colors in the quilt incorporated into it, or use a secondary color from the quilt like the green. What gorgeous colors you have going one there! The wall color really, really compliments the furniture finish. And as others have said, that lamp is super fabulous. I'm not a huge fan of the painting (though I do like the other art you have up) but if DD loves it, then by all means hang it!!! I also think that your furniture choice is great as far as longevity. Simply by changing wall color, bedding, art and accessories, that's a room that can grow with her till she leaves for college. My DD redid her bedroom in a similar all-vintage style last year. She's now a teenager, and constantly changing her idea of what she likes, and just last week she did a re-do of her room by changing out the vintage art for a 1960's "modern" poster, trading the nightstand for a clean-lined parsons table, swapping the desk chair for an Alvar Aalto chair we had in the basement, and changing some lighting and bedding. Now the room has a much more sophisticated and "Apartment Therapy" kind of vibe... but she KEPT the major components of furniture, which are vintage french-provincial similar to yours. So, even if your DD's tastes change as she grows up, I'll bet that great furniture will last :)

I'm very late to the opinion party here, but I just wanted to point out that I think it's wonderful to partner with our children on decorating their rooms. Letting them experiment with color, helping them with furniture placement and other design elements ... I think essentially it's really helping to develop the inner decorator in each of them! Think how many adults are afraid to paint anything other than white -- would life be different if their moms & dads had encouraged color exploration in their own homes and rooms? Last year, before loading some gorgeous Art Deco furniture we bought off Craigslist into our then 10-y.o. daughter's room, I talked to her about how the yellow that was on the walls (which she chose) just didn't work with the light bird's eye maple furniture. (Truly, it was going to be a terrible combo). We talked about potential colors and we went to the paint store. She went straight to BM French Lilac as her one and only choice. I, of course, picked out several other paint chips for variety and home we went. Well, we ended up with her first, instinctive choice and the room is just gorgeous. It better be, because that furniture is never going anywhere. Heavy doesn't even begin to describe it! LOL Anyway, I love that my daughter loves her room, and that she chose the paint. I never had that chance when I was a kid!

I read the other responses, but this is what I would do... I would change out the blue color, maybe a limish green or a blue than is more similar to the blue in the bottom butterfly wings on the quilts or the background in one of your pictures. Obviously, not that bright, but more in that color tone. Painting the trim would make it more girlish, but I think you could make some other changes before making that decision. If you have it in your budget to buy fabric, I would cover your beds in a solid color fabric to make the quilts pop more. Try hobby lobby for some cute wall decor. Last year, I found an adorable glittery wood wall letters that said "kisses" in the valentines section. It goes perfectly in my 5 year olds room. I would hang something like that above each of their beds. The dresser needs something cute on it. A little grouping of bears, blocks, picture frames or just something more decorative. You could paint some butterflies on one wall with just a few small pints of sample paint. You can get these at Sherwin Williams for $5 each in their cans designed to help you decide on a color and you can mix them in any of their colors. It would add a lot of pizzazz to the room, and a butterfly shape is pretty simple shapes put together. I would then add some cute basic curtains, maybe in a solid color. Good Luck, I'm sure they already love it, we always overanalyze these rooms, and I am sure they love it just the same now as they would later.

You can often find chandeliers at second hand stores for next to nothing. I bought a brass 6 arm chandelier for my kitchen for $6. It wasn't in bad shape or old or anything, someone just wanted a change. I sprayed the shiney brass with black spray paint and voila' new light that matched my decor perfectly for a fraction of the cost :)

BTW~I don't know exactly what style you would call that room but shabby chic is white painted furniture, found items, distressed items, peeling paint. The common colors tend to be pastels. Some floral fabrics are used. :)

Sweets98 - thanks for setting me straight with the terminology of shabby chic. I thought that is what my DD said she was trying to go for - I guess she didn't know what it was either. LOL I don't know what you would call that style - I don't even know what I would call my style in the rest of my house.

Thanks for the suggestion about the light. I am still looking. I am not too handy though so I need to buy something.
