Why do you grow walking (top setting) onions?
Comments (75)Finally, just found and ordered 40 heritage white from Egyptianonions.com, after eating the white multipliers and few of Kelly's potato onions all spring, I have narrowed my selections down to three varieties of perennial onions: heritage sweet white EWO, Kelly's potato onions and a white multiplier. The white multipliers and the heritage EWO are from the Deep South and suit my taste buds, and should provide green onions year round. Kelly's Green mountains will give me storage onions year round, therefore perennial onions that suit my taste buds and no more buying onions from the grocery store. Pretty excited about my plan, Heritage Whites and White Multipliers from Florida for year round green onions and Kelly's potato onions for storage, all well suited to my climate and taste buds. These are Kelly's potato onions from last week. Now putting up seed heads that I will start from seed next year. Hopefully I will wind up with a landrace well suited to my climate....See MoreUnderstanding suicide..why why why??? :(
Comments (51)So sorry to hear about your friend. DH is currently hospitalized for a severe clinical depression. One of the reasons I decided to get him in to the hospital was that he was talking of hopelessness, and that he couldn't see any way out of it.This sent alarms off in my mind.Dr's had allready experimented with a couple of anti depressants that wern't working for himHe was fortunate that I noticed and reconized the symptons right away.Since his depression started in June,I had read everything I could find which I'm sure helped me a great deal in making the decision. He did admit to the Dr that thoughts of suicide had crossed his mind,so it was a huge relief for me to have him in a safe place where he was being helped and monitered 24/7. Some people either don't have the support of family,or are able to hide their despair so well that the family isn't aware of how desperate they are. I've had two close friends who have recently lost a close family member to suicide,so I see the pain it leaves the family with first hand. I would imagine it's a feeling of total hopelessness that in the end drives them to commit this final act. DH is making progress ever so slowly, but at least for now I know he's safe. Hugs..Granlan........See MoreWhy not put pullout drawers in upper shelves of pantry?
Comments (22)I have a drawer pullout (behind doors) and a shelf over my fridge. This cabinet is 30" deep so stuff in the back would be inaccessible. I am short and have to pull out a stool anyway. This way I can get to the stuff in the back from the side. The shelf mounted very high above it? I think it has blueprints and a few unused barbecue accessories. This storage isn't for stuff I access regularly. But it holds all my canning supplies. Next to my fridge cabinet is another 30" deep cabinet 16" wide--a tall pullout pantry and a cabinet above. This cabinet too has a pullout drawer that we use for paper towels and garbage bags. I don't need a stool for this one because it's a little lower. I can grab a bag from the front without opening and I can pull it out to its full-extension glory if I need the paper towels in the rear. The shelf above that has rarely used appliances. Anyway I am in favor of pullouts on deeeeep uppers, at least for the bottom of them. Perhaps not for every-day stuff, because it's still way up there, but the space is easier to use with them....See MoreWalk In Pantry & Butlers Pantry
Comments (30)This is just bad. Starting with having to walk through the work area of the kitchen to get to two of the bedrooms. From there it goes downhill. Sorry to be so blunt. Here's my list that hopefully helps you rethink what you have: The best houses orient the public rooms towards the south for the best passive solar heating and cooling The best houses are L, U, T, H, or I shaped. The best houses are only one to two rooms deep. And covered lanai, porches, garages, etc count as rooms in this case. The best houses make sure kitchens have natural light, meaning windows so one doesn't have to have lighting 24/7 to use the kitchen. (And no, dining areas with windows 10' or more from the kitchen will not allow for natural light.) The best houses make sure all public rooms and bedrooms have windows on at least two walls. The best houses do not if possible put mechanical rooms, pantries or closets on outside walls The best houses keep public and private spaces separate. The best houses do not have you walk through the work zone of the kitchen to bring laundry to the laundry room. The best houses do not have the mudroom go through any of the work zones of the kitchen. The best houses do not use the kitchen as a hallway to any other rooms. The best houses do not put toilets or toilet rooms up against bedroom walls or dining areas. The best houses do not have walk in closets too small to stand inside. The best houses have an organizing “spine” so it’s easy to determine how to get from room to room in the house and what makes sense. So how many of these best practices does your house have?...See Moreannkh_nd
