This is a mood board I put together for the modern rustic DAT a while ago. Too fussy for my cottage, I think you're both right about horizontal. I loved the pulls I used - little canoe paddles. My architect might have a stoke if I suggested them. I've got white shiplap (?) walls here.

I remember seeing a modified shaker door that had (and I don't know the right term) a really wide (4-5" maybe) trim around the door rather than the usual 2-3". It looked more modern to me, but still sort of rustic.

Another alternative for you, a recessed panel door with the bevel only on the top and bottom of the panels. Really a modern variation on a shaker.

Several manufacturers make this type of door; in a wood such as this one and in a modern stain, you get a bit of that rustic modernity.

I would talk to a couple of cabinet makers to see what they suggest. This look is similar to the wall geokid posted. I think what can make your cabs rustic is the variation in wood tones left unstained. What can make them modern is if the wood is finished smooth with a nice glaze and of course minimal and streamlined hardware if not just finger grabs. This may be an opportunity to use reclaimed lumber to achieve the look.

You can always do slab inset to add additional architectural interest. And, you could do the face frame in one wood, and the doors in another if you wanted to echo some MCM furniture styles where they used rosewood and teak and walnut together.

That is a beautiful islands Lauren, thanks for sharing. I hope my peninsula will be somewhat similar, although we will use white oak rather than barn board.

Annkathryn, I do love reclaimed lumber, barn board, etc., and considered using it for all cabinets. The peninsula will be wood, at least the sides facing the living area. My architect is recommending white cabs, so that is where my mind is at the moment. I may still opt for wood on the uppers though.

Ikea bases with custom fronts are a likely possibility for us.

LWO, I really like the exposed hinges, I might ask about that. I like the idea of two woods as well, but it might not fly in this application as a warm white is the most likely colour choice for the cabs, at least for the moment.
