Fluorescent Under Cab Lighting question

I need to pick undercabinet lighting and I believe I want to just keep to fluorescent as I am not concerned with dimming. Can you tell me the exact brand you have used and the exact bulbs to purchase for the warm lighting look? I have seen Pegasus from Home Depot but not sure of what bulbs go with that. Thanks for you help.

"Warm" lighting would be 2700K if you can find that in lamp that will go in a U/C fixture. 3000K is widely available, but somewhat "cooler" than most incandescent lighting.

Most U/C fixtures take either T5 or T4 lamps; there are a few around that take T8 or T2 lamps. I haven't actually seen any 2700K lamps in the T5 or T4 size. I think they are available in T8, but fixtures that take T8 lamps are thicker than what most people want for a U/C fixture. (T2s are oddballs--you probably don't want something that may not even have replacement lamps available down the line.)

On the advice of our electrician we installed Pegasus Microfluorescent T4 light fixtures; we ordered them directly from the Pegasus website and had the option of choosing from several different lamps; we went with the 3000K lamp and are quite pleased with the results and the quality of the light.

The lights come in lengths from 9.5 inches to 46.5 inches; ours are about 40 inches. We mounted ours directly behind the 1-inch light rail and they are virtually invisible.

There are 3 main things to be aware of 1. Light choice - halogen, xenon, led, fluorescent 2. Direct wire (AC 120v) or low voltage (12 - 24DC) fixtures. 3. Controls - 1 switch or multi-way, dimmable or not dimmable. LED pros 1. Thin profile (2. Usually dimmable. 3. Low heat output. 4. High light output possible. Cons 1. Could be pricey. Need to shop around. Halogen Pros 1. Good CRI (Color Rendition Index) Cons 1. Hot. 2. Bulbs will burn out relatively quickly Xenon - similar to Halogen in terms of pros and cons Fluorescent Pros 1. Cheap 2. Good light output. Cons 1. Profile not quite as slim as LED 2. Usually not dimmable

Have you looked for a compact fluorescent (non-unitary) lumnaire that will mount under the cabinet? Quad tube might be bulky, but someone might make twin-tube lamp luminaires. Otherwise, you might be stuck with some configuration of warm-color light emitting decoration. 8-watt tube T5 luminaires are available that are just under 12". but the variety might not include anything pretty and I don't know about lamp quality.

First rule - never assume. What seems like an "obviously" or an "of course" to me hasn't been so much for most of the people we've talked to about doing our kitchen...so, no assuming. Anyway, as for your lighitng..why would it be "too much"? First and foremost, UC lighting is a task lighting and then secondary as an ambient light (some use for this and some don't). Lighting in glass cabinets is only an ambient/accent lighting, so it has nothing to do with if you have UC lighting or not. The real question is, do you want to use your UC lighting for ambient lighting or *only* task lighting? And if you plan on it (UC) for both, you'll probably want a dimmer for it. The UC lighting and the lights in the cabinets need to be on a separate switch...and it sounds like Sparky may not recognize that if he thinks it's "too much to do both", so don't assume that he knows to do that...make it very clear that's what you want. Lastly for now...it's always better to have too much light and turn it off than too little. And it's easier to install "too much light" when doing your reno. rather than trying to add it later.

We couldn't find warm bulbs at the big hardware stores, found them at lighting supply - they wanted $44 for 3 bulbs! We went across the street to Walmart and found them for $6 a piece.

We used Crescent Slimlyte Plus Undercabinet lighting with the warmwhite bulbs. They were supplied by our electrician and they work great!

My GE Premium fluorescent uc lights came with warm white. They are the thinnest of 3 grades of GE uc lights carried by HD and cost about $20 per 24" fixture 3 years ago. I use them nightly and I'm happy with them.
