Kitchen rugs (small) for wood floors

we're putting in a distressed maple floor in the kitchen. I want to have a small (emphasis on small) one in front of the sink and one by the back door - which leads to the patio and garden. I presume I want a rubber backed one? I know this is such a little detail but thinking ahead. Any brand that works well and does not look like I tried to put a Persian rug in my kitchen? (simple works best)

I'm crazy for Flor tiles. They are cheap, come in 57348738 different colours and patters and you can clean them SO easily. if anything awful happens to one just replace it.

modernmommy: those look cool. do you use 1 square? or a few? do stores carry them or only avail. on the internet?

It is never recommended to put an area rug with a rubber backing onto hardwood flooring. Most manufacturers state that you should only put a rug that is "breathable" on top of a wood floor. Sometime moisture will get under the rug and if it cant breathe that moisture will continue to sit on top of the hardwood floor causing damage.

I have a rug that covers most of the wooden floor. It is an indoor-outdoor material that looks/feels like almost woolen. No tripping or sliding because it covers the full width of the kitchen. I wanted the protection because the narrow kitchen is the route to the basement & back door, the dog who is fed in the kitchen, cat, and thoughtless other people in the house traipsing in through the back door (even though there is a mat there too). It does get dirty -- it is vacuumed a couple times/week, spot cleaned for spills, and cleaned with the rest of the carpeting in the house 3 times/year. I could, but have not, taken it outside to hose down and air dry. So I don't keep it as clean as I used to keep my vinyl floor, and tend to not think about it. The area in front of the stove isn't covered, that gets wiped down twice a week and is holding up well.

I always think that a mid-tone natural wood colour is the best option for staying power. Right now I like plank width of 4-6". That being said, a lot depends on the style of the house. In a 1950's era building 3" wide oak would be appropriate. In a building from the 1800s much wider, silvery grey oak would be amazing. We had a room in our previous home that was 15x25' and the floor was natural doug fir, 8" wide boards that spanned the entire width of the room, so every board was 15' long. It looked fantastic and was the first thing new visitors commented on.

It really depends on how big you want it. if you go to the website they show the rug kits and those can give you an idea of how big to get one. I have a 4x6 one in my kitchen. The really nice thing is that if someone spills something on one section that doesn't come off you just replace that part of it. I have kids and I use one with a LOT of white in my dining room and it actually looks fantastic, and this is after LOTS of food and melted ice cream etc being spilled on it :) I think some stores have some on stock but I have always ordered directly from them.

I just bought a few from Target until I find the perfect one. My floor guy said to make sure there's nothing scratchy on the back.
