Opinions please on Backsplash accent tiles

I'm going to try my hand for the first time at posting a photo not a link. We're almost at backsplash decision time. Small Brooklyn, NY kitchen 9x16 set up in two L's. Our cabinets are Divinity (off white) painted cabinets from Medallion. soapstone counters. stainless appliances. wood floor (not quite decided but warm not dark tone).

i have been loving these tiles since i saw them. my idea is to do a cream crackled subway tile 3/4 up from the counter and then to put a double row of these (they are 20 random patterns and the tiles themselves are 1x2) and then finish with cream crackle subway tile above. they are artful without being intense - and remind me of my garden. interestingly, please note that they are not so colorful in person...the camera saturated the coloring a lot.

may i have opinions on these?

Those are really pretty!

Just make sure that you can see them. If you are tall, the upper cabinets can block your view of them if you place them too high. If they are placed too low, stuff on the counter can block your view of them.

ok...to make it clearer i uploaded our layouts. my idea is that the accent tiles will be - essentially - across from each other. two rows. on the sink wall, 3/4 up beween the two windows.

Hi, the tiling job is in a brand new house, done by a sub-contractor of our builder. We didnt really have a choice but trusted our building to select someone who does good work. The other subs he hired seemed to do great work, and the floor looked good so I guess we assumed he knew how to do backsplash for kitchen & bath... We talked to the builder & sub - today, he started to rip down the tile, all the while destroying our brand new sheetrock.. We had to basically tell him how to re-do it, explain step by step. cross your fingers! Going to re-post this with tile in the subject line to get more responses, please take a look! well it is too dark for me - too close to your cabinet color so it creates a blah look. That said, I do like the slate idea - just think you should go lighter. Take a look at the prairie or desert gold on the link below to get an idea about a lighter shade that would go better with your floor as well. Wow, thank you tanders and kitchenredo08 for being interested in how it turned out. I PROMISE to put up some pictures within a week. This project has had a lot of ups and downs. First, it took about three weeks for the material to arrive. When it came, I was thrilled; it was exactly what I hoped for. Then came the really fun part: installation. I was talked into the idea that we could do this ourselves. Hmmmm, not sure how to characterize that decision since this post could potentially be read by the other party to the decision ;-). Anyway, let's suffice it to say that stone tile, especially a split face is not for the novice installer. But we got it installed with just a few snafus. Then it was time for grout. We started using the pastry bag method, but abandoned it when my hand began to cramp. Switched to a float. BIG mistake. Grout EVERYWHERE in ALL of the nooks and crannies. Three weeks later and we're still chipping out grout. But we're getting close. Close enough where I'm loving it again. So anyway, it's been an adventure. My advice to anyone who wants to do stone; hire a professional. Again, I PROMISE some pictures very soon. I'm too embarassed to post my kitchen right now with chisels and nano scrub and sponges everywhere. Karen

Eeek! Celineike that is great! I love the legs you added on that. I was trying to talk DH into figuring out a way to add legs on our island and at first he said no way, but then said maybe. You pic will totally help my cause. Our island will be more like katieob's where the legs would be where our seating is on the long side of the island. Thanks for sharing! I really do love the Heath tile though you picked, I can't wait to see your completed kitchen and how it all comes together. I like the idea of maybe doing a light gray in the Heath that artemis78 suggests if you wanted to add a bit more color. My kitchen will be very similar in colors to yours and we still have no idea what to do for backsplash. As for cleaning, like I said we have the bigger tiles in our bathroom and along the wall that stays dry they still look great. But where they get hit by water in the shower, they are a pain to keep clean, but maybe if they had a thinner grout line, and you could somehow seal them they would stay a lot cleaner. I have no experience in the kitchen with them though.

I love those tiles. Just make sure that they are sealed and/or easy to clean if they're by the stove.

They are GORGEOUS!!! Who makes them??? I am also in the midst of a *small* kithen redo and lookin for ideas for a backsplash!!

Are those from Sonoma Della Vigna style? I was looking at Sonoma and found that they have a second line called "Market Collection". The tiles look the same but the colors are different and the prices seem a little lower (at least for the 3x6 subway crackle tiles). You may want to check them too for pricing and to see other color options.

they are from the sonoma della vigna collection. i wasn't going to use the sonoma subway tiles tho...a dif. company. these are expensive but we're going to use them as an accent band.
