How do I Fit Range Hood Duct to a Smaller Vent Hole Opening?
Comments (6)I agree with Weissman. I had a friend who had no duct at all. She hired an HVAC guy to install ductwork by opening her drywall, installing the 8" duct between the studs (or was it the joists?) (just barely fit, she told me), and cutting a hole to the outside, including the damper. While it sounds like a big deal, she told me that in the end, actually it wasn't. She was lucky to have an empty soffit above her cabinets, and also did not have a long distance to the outside, about 6'. She says she is so glad she did it. The cost (she was surprised it wasn't so much) and any aggravation are long forgotten, but meanwhile she will have years of enjoyment from cooking with her hood and good ductwork. Of course it depends on each home and its setup, but you could at least look into it....See Moreduct work questions for installing kitchen hood vent
Comments (16)One would have expected Prestige to provide some advice, but without it, I recommend you match six-inch vents with six-inch ducts. Larger ducting reduces resistance but also slows down the air velocity. Commercial ducting requires 2000 ft per min air velocity to limit the amount of grease that will condense. According to some sources I've read, residential velocities should aim for the 1000 to 2000 ft per min range. The two six-inch vents can be merged into a duct with the same cross-section, around 8-inches, but only if both power packs are powered at the same time. Otherwise, keeping the velocity up requires individual ducts. A call to Prestige may be desirable. kas...See MoreHow Do You Clean Your Outside Range Hood Vent?
Comments (6)In my experience with my 1400 cfm Tradewind liner with baffles there would be no need to ever "clean" any parts except the baffles. My rationale for this is the following. Once a week ( more often if it warrants it ) I remove the baffles and clean them. depending on how much stir fry and deep fat frying we have done they are quite greasy, sometimes very very oily and one or two times , before I realized that they capture everything they were dripping droplets of golden oil. I also wipe down the surrounding area and there is never anything on this area at all. I have pushed the damper up and tried to wipe in that area and felt up there with my hand and there is nothing up there either. The process of using your hood correctly should remove any need for cleaning other than the baffles. The hood should be turned on at least 5 min. before you begin cooking and remain on at least that long at the end. This insures that all grease products are trapped on the baffles and then the remaining products, steam/heat/odors are removed to the outdoors. I hope this helps you with your decision. The baffles or your mesh should be very dirty on a regular basis, depending on your cooking style. Also there should not be any grease on any part of your surrounding area in the kitchen. If there is then the vent is not working correctly or you can adjust your use of it. Good Luck c...See MoreHow do vent your cooktop and does it work well?
Comments (15)Do you use an overhead hood, over the range microwave, or downdraft ventilation? Overhead hood What hood are you using? Wolf Pro Island Hood around 60 inches long. Captures effluent from 36-inch induction hob cooktop and nearby wok induction hob. What is the style - standard, chimney, canopy pro style or custom wood with insert? See Wolf literature Wall mount, under cabinet or Island mount? Island mount over peninsula What type of blower - internal, remote or inline? External Wolf supplied, Broan/Nutone manufactured. Works with variable control on hood. How many cfms? 1500 nominal at zero static pressure, but probably around a 1000 on max setting at -0.1 inches of house pressure with baffles in place, ducts, and silencer. House calibration has not yet begun. Ducted or Non-ducted? ducted How do the ducts go to the outside? Length, turns, size, thru attic, down into basement? Up a few feet to attic, ~80 degree bend to a Fantech silencer, then some more duct and another ~80 degrees to the roof. Length hasn't been measured, but might be around 20 feet. Do you find it too loud? No Do you have make-up air? A work in progress. MUA will have to dynamically compensate for this hood at any setting, a variable 1000 cfm nominal (probably up to 600 actual) vented filtered diffuser pair over the wall ovens, three bathroom fans, various states of window openings, fireplace, and furnace. If a renovation, then how hard was it to install ducts and how much did it cost? Too difficult to separate out from kitchen ceiling reconstruction, re-insulating the attic, etc. I may not want to know. If a new build then did builder charge you more to duct one way or another? N/A Most importantly, is it effective and work for your needs? Yes....See MoreTxMarti
