Close-up photos of DIY painted cabs?

User

Whenever someone posts an old oak kitchen, invariably they get the advice to paint the cabs white. What do those painted cabs look like in person? All I've seen are long shots of the whole kitchen and nothing of the finish. Anyone have close-up photos or first-hand experience? Anyone try this and wish they hadn't?

I have read the multi-step process that it takes to get excellent results. Phew!! Realistically, not everyone will put that much work into it. Without that effort, is it better to just live with the oak cabs until they can be replaced?

I need some convincing. Show me what's possible in a DIY painted cabinet so I can get over my prejudice against painting every oak cabinet white and slapping on Group XXVII granite and an Ann Sacks backsplash. ;)
