Love it! But I know a couple people who would disagree. A former GW member writes her blog in lower case. She did the same when she was active here years ago.

It is funny, but -- damn -- I thought the post was going to be on how one capitalizes on someone else's bonkers blog.

Don't get me all riled up here :) I am a high school teacher in an urban district. Spell check a misspelled definitely and it magically becomes defiantly. As in "i defiantly oppose raising the age of getting a drivers lisince," in a persuasive essay. Soapbox?! Not me, not tall enough. I have been known to stand on my desk waving a Harry Potter wand to dispel "Capaspellitis Erroneous." after reading 1st drafts to make a point. Students are no longer capable of even capitalizing "I". Never mind to, too, and two. There, they're and their. I blame, for the most part, OK 50%, Bill Gates and his evil empire. Spell check and grammar, not grandma,check to be specific. The other 50% would be texting. I actually see l8r instead of later in formal research papers. Most of which are torturous proofreading nightmares!!!

But wait there's more. Can you read this? One student actually brought this to me to prove his point about his spelling issues! I could read it but "defiantly" it did not help his GPA. A+ for effort though :)

Chicagoans, that's priceless! A lot of the capitalization problem started way before Gates among the computer people. Because lower and upper case have different assigned numbers, and search strings look for exact matches. In the old days, the goal was to code as sleekly as possible to cut down processing time and allow the most important things to take up the registers. Adding a subroutine to a search/match--that's a word search, not a Google style high level algorithm--that transformed all capitals into lower case before matching was cumbersome. Instead, the instruction to users was that the matching routing was case sensitive. Therefore, everyone learned to do everything in all lower or all caps. All caps are hard to read, so they aren't used much. Add to that, it's hard to capitalize on a keyboard without a shift--and a lot of the kids don't know how to touch type either--and you get what you get. :)

CeltinNE, interesting demonstration!! I don't know about other languages but it wouldn't work for Hebrew. Hebrew is written as only the consonants to begin with, and most of the root woods are three letters long. Rearrange them and you get grammatical endings and prefixes in the middle of the word, and if you mix up the root you get a different word. Grape becomes stone, for instance.

Of course the fact that people can read Hebrew at all proves the ability of the mind to recognize degraded patterns that the Cambridge thing was trying to point out. :)

Here is an excellent visual demonstration of how a basic match sort works. Imagine if you had to have twins in each of the places to represent both upper and lower case! Back when they first figured out how to make computers work, they could have put a diacritic on each letter. That is, they could have reserved one bit for upper or lower case, and ignored that one on searches and matches, but they didn't, more's the pity.

Reminds me of the book about punctuation called "Eats, Shoots & Leaves." One stray comma makes all the difference in how a sentence reads.

The Cambridge word scramble wouldn't likely work for Japanese either. Written Japanese or Kanji is based on symbols that basically represent objects. Many common words like seasons, animals, and foods are represented by a single Kanji. There are about 2,000 characters commonly used and they do not typically spell words out letter by letter as in English. Some of the same combinations have different meanings depending on context.

Rippongi, a neighborhood of Tokyo popular with foreigners, literally means "six trees" but the symbol only has three trees and each looks only slightly different. I learned important words as whole sets of symbols and if they were recombined I would have been lost.

That's my take on it though a Kanji expert would have a more detailed explanation of how it works.

okay, VERY funny, but there's no way i'm taking the time to hit a shift key. i DO use punctuation and apostrophes which is more than i can say for others (not here, but in my other life).
and i worked in publishing for seventeen years, so i am familiar with the practice.

celtinNE - crazy how easy that was to read. Also wouldn't work in Chinese since every word has its own individual character (note appropriate use of its). No spelling in Chinese, but you sure have to know a lot of characters to read the paper.
