My husband and I remodeled a small 1949 house and recently moved in.

The original house had 2 bedrooms and a full bath upstairs. We kept the bedroom in the front of the house and the hall bathroom the same (with some updates to the bath). We turned the smaller bedroom in the back of the house into the master bath, and added a master bedroom in the area that was originally attic.

Walls are BM Warm Sunglow and aren't as bright as in most of the pictures. Trim is KM Swiss Coffee. The bedding fabric is from Calico Corners. I upholstered the headboard and made all the bedding except the bed skirt. The floors are bamboo.

There's a pocket door to the master bath. The roofline in this area was tricky. We squeezed a furnace in the attic above the bath - access is in the bedroom.

Our original plan was for built-in bookcases and a window seat. This might happen eventually, but in the meantime we used bookcases that we already had for the window wall. We also need shades for privacy.

what a gorgeous space !! Wow...just wow...I love the wall color.. I am partial to terra cotta family colors. The use of the sq footage that you had is wonderful. You are a great seamstress too !! c

Multiple thoughts, not all in line with the majority: - Five bedrooms is a huge house. The potential field of buyers who want the space and upkeep of a house that large (and who can afford it) is relatively small. More plainly, You're looking to build a house that only a small percentage of buyers can afford to buy. Wanting a thing and being able to afford a thing aren't the same. Your pool of resale buyers will be small, so selling could take a long time, or you might be forced to take less than you want. - Yes, people will like the idea of a "master up and a master down": live-in space for mom, space for a live-in nanny or elder care-giver. Plenty of reasons people would like the space. But the real question is, Will your resale buyer be willing to pay what it will cost you to build it? Personally, I think you'll attract plenty of interest, but you may not attract the necessary dollars at resale to make this worthwhile. - How old are these small children? By the time you finish building this house, they'll probably be at least a year older -- how long will you want to have bedrooms close by? - I'm a highly practical person: you're talking about a short time when kids are small. To save money, could you sleep in a "non-master" upstairs for this short time, then move downstairs? - How "master" do you see your "masters"? That is, when you say "master bedroom", are you envisioning a slightly larger room with a modest walk-in closet and a private 3-piece bath ... or does "master" to you mean a spacious room with a seating area, a massive closet and a luxury bath? The question isn't just, "Should I have two masters?" It's, "Just how much will I put into a master?" Your own vision of "how much" can make a world of difference in this question. - Don't overbuild for your neighborhood. Remember that the biggest, most expensive house in the neighborhood is "drawn down" by the more modest houses that surround it. - Summary: Don't be caught up in just whether this is a desirable idea -- it is. Consider first and foremost whether it is an economically viable idea.

I love the first chair you posted, but I definitely agree that if you are looking to actually use it to curl up in, I don't think that one is it. I think any of the others will be very nice, but I think my preference would be the last 2. ( I am also looking into a chair for bedroom. I do have one that does have arms and I do use it but it's more of a queen anne type so not super curl up in. I think if you have room for it, an ottoman with a chair would be really good).

3ontree this drawing with the bath flipped makes more sense than what I was shown initially. Thanks very much! Question.... Was trying to keep it separate the bath from closet, but the new layout makes the closet smaller? I have a beautiful back yard, and I need to have windows just for safety, I can't imagine hearing a noise and not having a window to peak at from. If I were to move the bath and closet to the south wall as suggested I believe I will lose a lot of daylight and I can't imagine what the front elevation will look like. Attached is a picture of front elevation and rear elevation. Rear: Small window is the hall bath.

Looked at a house a few years ago that had 3 bedrooms on the second floor and a fourth bedroom and bathroom in the third floor attic. Like yours it had the problem that you could only get to the fourth bedroom through the master bedroom. Even stranger you went through the master then opened a door to the stair, which was actually an open spiral stair on a little balcony open to the first floor stair below. It was one of several oddities to this house that told us to move on despite being on a great lot in a great location* I would only consider this house if you wanted to make the 4th floor the master (does it have it's own bathroom?) or make the second bedroom your master and shrink the current master to create a corridor to the stair, making the remainder your future kid's bedroom. Otherwise, see if you can find something that works better for your current and future family. * other quirks: the current owners had expanded the kitchen to gargantuan proportions to take over the dining room and breakfast room with 2 of every appliance. The counters were set at 42" with all of the appliances set on platforms. There was a finished and heated tacked on man cave bigger than any other living room that could only be reached by walking across the garage. And the master bathroom was being sold as-is in raw shell condition. A house rife with do-it-yourself and too-personalized conditions that ended up selling for way more than it should because of it's location.

Thanks for the nice comments! I know the wall color is a bit out there and it took about a month to decide on it. It's basically the same pumpkin/orange that's found in the duvet fabric, which is called Lyceana Duckegg.

The dresser was my grandmother's and is from the late 1800s as far as I know. It has a marble top, intricate carving, and burl wood of unknown type, maybe mahogany? I refinished it many years ago and have carted it all over the country with me ever since.

There are 2 closets with double doors. The doors match the original doors of the house which are very simple.

Nice job! It's refreshing to see a different and creative color scheme. I like the way you have integrated the antique dresser & the modern headboard in your BR & the linen closet with the modern vanity & lights in the bath. Both are very nice.
We are in the planning stages of our MBA, with a shower similar,in size, to yours .

I'm smiling because when I started this thread there were two other threads that seemed a propos, one about inappropriately-sized windows and the other showing an orange wall and asking what the heck the decorator was thinking? So thanks to everyone who responded so positively to my photos :)

I wish I knew more of the history of my dresser. I believe it originally belonged to my grandmother's mother. I inherited a matching piece that's slightly smaller and has marble as a backsplash as well as on the top. I don't have room for it in my house so it's at my parents'. It needs to be refinished, but this first one took me so long to do that I never got around to refinishing the second.

flowerchild the integration of the different styles was a bit more random than it was planned. We downsized and had to find room where we could for pieces we wanted to keep. With only 2 bedrooms (the 3rd is an office) we didn't have room for too many dressers, so one ended up in a closet! And the linen tower was purchased for the master bathroom in our previous house and matched the vanities there.
