I love the way the columns and ceiling treatment help define the dining area in an open concept plan...visual walls without actual walls to make the space feel small.

This ceiling, punched up and soffited down and indirectly lit...it's all too much for one room. Some judicious editing would have been appreciated.

Thanks, amysrq. Glad to hear that I might be able to mix the two looks. Most of the time I see cans placed in the ceiling between beams but I have seen cans in beams a few times on design shows on T*V (and yes I know not all things shown on T*V are good ideas ;-)) when it was impossible or difficult to add can lights into the ceiling. The only show that I can recall is Divine Design but danged if I can find photos of that episode. It was an att*ic bed*room owned by a young couple and done in soft colors but that's all I can recall. Candace Olson uses smaller can lights (3" or 4", not sure) instead of the usual 6" can lights and I'm sure that helped the cans blend better. I like the look of wall sconces but the location of doors and windows in our DR makes balancing placement to evenly light the room difficult. For this reason, ceiling light is the way to go. But you did give me an idea. Perhaps I could do cove lighting instead of putting cans in the box beams. I'd really rather not tear into the ceiling (more $$$) if possible. I'm going to make time to visit my local light*ing st*ore soon with my DR plan in hand and see what they suggest. In the meantime, I'd still love more feedback (and photos if possible) about my idea. Sounds like the light popcorn texture I had (didn't look like popcorn, but same material. How about just having it removed in the other half - since that would happen if you ever wanted to paint it too and then do matching ceilings. I agree I personally wouldn't like having two different types of ceilings.

Thanks Virgil - we will definitely not do the lay flat - looks crappy. Prefer the 2x2, hubby said that there is a 2.5x2.5 which could mirror the 5' spacing of the bar joists for consistency. (Not sure anyone would notice but us and pretty sure that starts to limit us on the HVAC stuff / lighting.) The recessed tegular is a good compromise and what our initial quote is for and seems to be quiet reasonable (under budget right now, but I'll fix that!), but I will check out the canceled spine costs too - thanks. I LOVE the linear lights - I saw several that don't look too terribly expensive (again - all is relative...) and think that putting them in the pantry area would be awesome to highlight the galley aspect of that. Other areas can be lighted by a square LED can that will provide a consistent rectilinear look too at far less cost. Perhaps even ganging a few of them together in a pattern gives creativity with a lower cost light source. Thanks for the feedback!

We just insulated the space as it is under a conditioned space, our sunroom. We just need to pick something more decorative than plywood or vinyl so it is aesthetically pleasing. Thank you

Beautiful pictures. I've never seen some of them before. I've seen the starburst mirror on the ceiling before and for some reason it creeps me out, in an Exorcist kind of way.

I like many of them, but the oval one with the constellations is breathtakingly beautiful to me. I love the silver leaf too.

The one with all the framed pictures- to me it looks kind of silly.

I agree with marti8a that the sunburst mirror on the ceiling is creepy, as in the exorcist!

Since I had never thought of looking at ceiling decor on Russian interior design websites, I went and browsed a bunch of them. Tons of fun discoveries, although some would be rather outlandish for some (and me too!).

I love the daisy too! From the balcony railing visible in the window I surmise it's an apartment in an old building. Most likely circa 1900's or earlier. Those apartments tend to be dark and sometimes even gloomy. But the room looks bright and cheery thanks to the design and colors.

More ceiling ideas - traditional, modernist, creative and plain funky. :-)

AnnieD: Another great thread. I look forward to seeing all the ideas. You are right about that one room that needed editing; the ceiling belongs in a much grander proportioned room.

I saw something recently here or at Houzz or somewhere else on high gloss painted ceilings (using FPE, of course). There is an example linked below.

Thanks for remembering, OB2B! No I haven't started the actual ceiling yet. I have been practicing on a practice board and decided I need a LOT more practice. I have good colors, but technique leaves a lot to be desired. DH says I am getting better though, which is encouraging.

It is great to see such a variety of ideas -- thanks. We have only 8 foot ceilings so it is helpful to those options that work for shorter ceilings.
