Quality of Kraftmaid cabinets?
Comments (8)I can comment on how well KM holds up. A few months ago I luckily found some GORGEOUS KM cabinets on Craigslist. A local kitchen designer was remodeling their showroom, and these cabinets had been installed and used by their staff for four years (they're office cabs with file drawers and a desk). The cabinets had to be dismantled and transported to me and installed once again, this time in my home office. I've since filled up all the lower file drawers with tons of paper (why do we hold on to so much JUNK??) and the uppers are filled to the gills with books. The drawers still glide smoothly despite the weight, and all the doors still swing tautly from the hinges. In spite of years of use, disassembly and re-assembly, the cherry wood (Dresden stain with black glaze) still looks outstanding. This was a real lucky find for us. The showroom sold them to me for $500, uppers and lowers that run 8' x 5' on an L-shaped wall. They've got beautiful crown and thick rope molding, looks terrific with the black glaze. Oh, and the cabinets also came with the original beautiful CaesarStone quartz, which they were able to remove (!!! how the heck??) and reinstall, again without flaw! Now, when it came to selecting a cabinet brand for our kitchen remodel last summer, I opted not to go with KM based on the numerous experiences of posters here and several friends, as well as feedback from our cabinet supplier. As I'm sure you've read, KM's quality-control can be hit-or-miss, and I just didn't want the hassle of delaying our project if pieces had to be re-ordered. We went with Medallion cabinets and couldn't be happier....See MoreQuality Difference Between Thomasville and KraftMaid Cabinets?
Comments (7)Kraftmaid has more selection in door styles, woods, and colors. Their new antiqued and burnished options greatly expand something that was already big to begin with. Their finishes are good, not great quality and are a solid value for the money. They also have great options in their spec book. It's nice and big, which translates into lots of options for a space so it's easier to design something that really works for an awkward space. They also have a ton of internal organizer like you can only dream of! Their customer service is responsive, and in the world of cabinet lines, timely. That translates as replacement parts usually only taking 10 days if there is only one or two needed. Their shipping is pretty good, so it's only the occasional replacement part that is needed for shipping damage. Their quality control is decent, but, and here's the biggie, they are only a mid grade cabinet line, not a top quality line. Don't expect top of the line materials and finishes and you'll be fine. The wood will have heartwood and sap wood, and natural pin holes and mineral streaks. If you want cabinets that are "perfect", you'll have to pay at least double for "perfect". If you don't mind cabinets that show that they are made of real wood, with all of it's imperfections, then you'll be OK with Kraftmaid. Masterbrand cabinets, aka Thomasville, has much the same positives and negatives as above with a few other particulars. They use a much thicker cabinet back panel that is structural, so when installing, you can put the screw anywhere you can reach, not just in the "hanging rail" that most other cabinets, including Kraftmaid, have. Their stained wood cabinet finishes, in my opinion, are a bit higher grade than Kraftmaid. They are richer and more "furniture quality". I really like their new "Heirloom Black" and "Sage Paint" finishes, and their "Brierwood Cherry" is probably my favorite cherry stain of all of the cherry cabinets that I've seen from mid price manufacturers. It's not too dark, and not too light, not too red, and not too brown. Their production line is also a bit quicker than Kraftmaid, but that's really an insignificant detail in the world of "hurry up and wait" remodeling....See Morekraftmaid cabinet finishes
Comments (11)Wood is a natural product and all wood cabinets are naturally varied as a result. That's normal. If you want something else, well, there are are ways to get cabinets with zero variation in finish. #1. Pay a big premium for premium matched woods (like 100% cherry heartwood) and the time of a custom cabinet maker to carefully match and finish each piece like fine furniture. This is the most expensive approach. 2. Do a painted finish. Paint will uniformly cover the variations in the wood. This isn't ideal if you want "wood" cabinets, but it will give you uniformity. 3. Do a tinted varnish as a topcoat. This has a lot in common with a painted finish as it obscures the natural wood grain. But it does leave the wood looking more uniform. This is an approach that many very low cost lines use to create dark finishes on difficult to finish woods like maple. Any chips in the finish will show the light wood underneath. My suggestion is to take a closer look at many different cabinet lines. What you will see is that the natural variations that will blend together as a whole in your kitchen. It all looks "the same", but NOT "uniform". If any single door or drawer is very very different, then Kraftmaid (or any other brand) will be glad to exchange it out for a new one. But, expecting wood to be perfectly uniform and even in color is only setting yourself up for massive disppointment. It is an unrealistic expectation....See MoreKraftMaid poor quality cabinets and molding
Comments (8)The two splits are installer related. Failure to drill pilot holes and placing a screw too close to the edge of the wood. The bad finish on the door--that door should be replaced. That one IS on Kraftmaid....See Morecoleen3201118
