What about a pendant or hanging light over the breakfast nook?

The first 2 are from Hudson Valley lighting.

I did want to hang one over the breakfast nook, but it really isn't a "true" nook, very tiny area, the ceiling there (between the bay window) drops down, so I couldn't center it under the table.

I think any of the above look great. If you're worried about continuity, you might consider getting all the lights from the same brand so that the finish matches? My fixtures are all from Schoolhouse Electric, and the globes are either vintage or from Rejuvenation. Works great.

What about the ceiling lights drives you crazy? I've got flushmount globes in the center ceiling, pendants over the sink and eating nook, and love them.

Re. the breakfast nook: for an extra $25, Schoolhouse Electric (and probably other manufacturers, too) will adapt any fixture so that it can accommodate a slanted ceiling and still hang straight. I'd suggest one of those for your nook, even if the pendant rod is only a few inches long.

Have you considered any ceiling fans? I'd think they'd be period appropriate and useful. I love having one near our table. I turn it low when serving hot food, but it makes hanging out there, with the windows open, pleasant in warm weather.
I am not crazy about the 2nd pendant but the rest are nice.

Those lights all seem out of step with the age of the home. They are lights from around 1900-1920 or so.

Tinker- I'd definitely do a little chandelier, over the breakfast nook. Have you seen the tiny ones, Candice Olson sometimes uses? Nothing too fancy, but I'd want it to look 'dining area' rather than another ceiling light.

If it were me, I'd find a pendant and little chandelier that you love and then find the ceiling lights. What are you using in the dining room? Maybe a smaller, slightly simpler version, for the nook?

We used various sizes of schoolhouse lights that we picked up at antique markets and e-bay throughout our kitchen and keeping room. DH put together each light after ordering needed parts from a lighting store. (Sorry the pictures are so large but I don't have a clue on how to resize.) The lights in the first picture are located in the old part of the kitchen when we renovated and placement was dictated by the location of the light that was already there.

lavendar, great link - very helpful! I really can't do a pendant or chandler over the nook table, the drawing is not really 100% accurate, there just isn't that kind of room. I'll have to snap a better picture!

marcolo, I do like #2 - and it was /is an option. I don't care for the strips on #1. I still think school house lights would be age appropriate - at least close enough that unless you know period fixtures and time-lines.. you'd never know! I do like #3 too, may use that in a bath or hall - thanks for the pictures!

dianalo, previous owner had a fan, I don't know... I didn't love it, but something to consider still!

circuspeanut, you're right - I really need to find both the pendant and the ceiling lights from the same manufacturer... it is important to me that the finish is the same!

Here is another picture - I don't have anything better, but if you look at the picture, the center of the table would be directly under the crown molding... I think it would look odd having a light hang from there.

Try looking at some salvage yards. You can find authentic lighting from the period you seek. have them refurbished, and you will have a one of a kind light.

Tinker- In your plan, it looks like you're adding a window seat, in the bay. Is that the case or are you using the four chairs, as in the picture?

I'd be tempted to slide the table out a few inches and hang a light, right in front of the crown molding. If that's not possible, then maybe some sconces, on either side of the bay? It's such a cute feature, it would be nice to play it up a bit.

Now, you're changing the walls to light yellow, right? So the green is no longer what you're matching the lighting finishes to, correct?

Do you have a current picture of the kitchen?

lavendar, yes, we'll be adding a window seat and will probably only use 2 chairs - it is a really tight spot, and the chair on the end (into the kitchen) really blocks the walk way. I think it is hard to tell from the drawings and pictures. I meant to take another picture today - and I forgot, but here is one from a couple weeks back.

looking back at my floorplan picture - the table is not to scale, if I was to have a 42" table, centered under the hole shown, the table would be in the middle of the doorway. I did think at one time of adding a hanging lantern type light from that soffit - but I changed my mind for some reason... think I better do a bit of visualization tomorrow!

Tinker- The window seat is going to be wonderful. I can see why it would be crowded with the table and four chairs.

I know you have to decide on a lighting plan, but is there anyway you can put in a temporary bench and table, to get an idea of what the window seat and table will look like? It might help you visualize the space and how you will use it.

Another idea, what do you plan to do at the table? Is it just for eating breakfast or will you be using it to write bills or any reading? That might make a difference with your lighting needs, too.

Post new pictures, when you get a chance. You're going to end up with a beautiful kitchen :)
