I really love roman shades and we have a wonderful 6-foot one over a picture window in the living room that is really great. Just don't love them in the kitchen because the fabric holds odors and they basically cannot be easily cleaned. I'd prefer solars, to be honest, or natural materials that at least can be damp-wiped. Having said that, if you're set on a roman and use the fabric you've selected on a 6-foot window, I feel it would be dominant and rather dark -- much like the last pic boxer posted. People often talk about "color at the window" and it always puzzles me because in a relatively monochromatic kitchen as it's been described, anything with color or anything dark is going to advance visually and pop. Window treatments are one of my loves but I don't want them to be the first thing someone notices in a room unless there's something super duper about the windows or you're trying to use them to disguise. So I look for colors that blend -- something that flows with the BM Straw on the walls and perhaps has a subtle print. Otherwise, the risk is upstaging the kitchen IMO and it happens a lot.

Thanks everyone. My thought was to bring in some color and pattern to what is currently all wood, wood tones and metal. I did think to add texture, but would a natural woven shade look boring? By the way, I am a girl. :) I love the rich color of the cabinets, but strengthening the masculine aspects of the room may not be what I want. I don't want a window treatment to look cheap or out of place, or country or frilly, but I would rather soften the formality than make it more formal. I like rich colors, but making it a little less traditional, giving it a little modern edge would be nice, but I also like to add some contrasting elements to keep it interesting and personal. I am certainly open to keeping it rich and clean lined, but I need to add some interest and contrast in some way. I picked a faucet that that is supposed to have an organic shape from nature, it looks like a nodding flower to me. I also picked it in shiny chrome to add a little shiny sparkle and break up the brushed nickel and stainless steel bit. The light fixtures I thought were also a little like flowers and might go with the faucet but I think now they just look sort of old fashioned. I may eventually change the knobs, but have no idea to what. I think glass would be very pretty but would play up the formality even more, and to be honest, this kitchen indulges my formal side, but my house is really not super formal. If I could add a little punch, a little color, even soft color, as well as texture, and make it a little less masculine and traditional at the same time, I would love that. I may be a hopeless cause, however. They had to talk me out of a mini pendant at the lighting store that was a small cube of crystals with a light in the center. :) LOL, I just found a piture of it: I will save that for somewhere else, though. I have no problem adding a crystal pendant over a country bed. :) Hmmm, maybe one over each night stand... Oops slapping myself upside to get back to the current task and stop daydreaming. If you have ANY specific recommendations please feel free. I may be wrong, but I am just afraid plain wood blinds would would be too much of the same thing. Whatever I go with, it has to be an inside mount because of the cabinet moldings that don't leave room for an outside mount in the top corners of the window. Photos are hard to get because of the glare, but here is a clearer picture of the window area. When I make blackout lined draperies, to decrease the amount of fabric/bulk in my double folded hems, headers & side seams, I don't fold the lining into them. I fold & press the drapery fabric, but do not stitch it. Then, I lay the blackout lining on to the drape fabric & cut the lining (to meet up with the edge of the finished edges). Then, I tuck the lining under every folded side & header, pin & stitch. I leave the lining un-tucked along the bottom hem...the lining will not need to be stitched inside that hem. When all done, each of my side seams and the header have only one layer of blackout lining inside of them. I don't know if this strategy will help in your situation, but it's worth some thought. Below are some photos that might help explain what I am trying to say. Ignore how wrinkled the blackout lining is. After pleating & hanging these drapes, the wrinkles all went away. This shows the right side seam and lower hem double folded & pressed. Lay blackout lining on top. Cut blackout lining to length & width - up to the edges so you can tuck them inside the side seams & header. Header on the left, bottom hem on the right. Lining inserted into folded header & side seams. Ready to pin & stitch. Lower hem of lining does not get tucked in.

Wow, thanks for all of the feedback! Lot of new ideas to consider! Anna, the shade with the ribbon ties is so sweet. I would love that, but I think we need to do blackout liner as my daughter is a very light sleeper. I think with the blackout, it would not hang right if just tying with ribbon. I love that look though, and might do for another room. Connie, and Shadylady thank you, wow, so much to learn from your posts. I will have to save them for reference. I am not familiar with a lot of the products you mentioned, but will look for them. I would love to be able to have a more professional result! My daughter just turned 10, so I am not as worried about the string, but definitely will look for the safety products anyway. Katie and Christy, I like the idea of a valance and some curtains underneath also. I think that would be easier for me to make. Do you think this look can still be in style though? Or perhaps it would look too formal for a young girl's room? I will look through houzz some more for inspiration too. thank you so much!
