Quirky LR/DR: Pick fabric and trim color for ottomans

At many of your suggestion, we are replacing the coffee tables in front of our couch and fireplace with ottomans. We are looking for suggestions for fabric and trim. Here is the main sitting area in our not-big L-shaped LR/DR. Walls are yellow. The chair print is red, wheat and crÃ¨me. The couch is gold.

This 28 inches round tufted ottoman would go in front of the couch. It needs recovering, but what color?

My tentative thought is to use a heavy weight, textured solid red fabric and add trim in either gold or a funky mix of yellow, blue, and red, such as something from this series of Susan Sargent. (Note, after we add the ottoman, we will look at modifying the couch pillows, the floor lamp shade, or adding a red throw blanket.)

Ottoman #2 is the lovely green vinyl item that you see by the fireplace. My tentative though is to use a fabric similar to the couch, but add red trim. We would also like to buy a bigger print for over the fireplace, but that might take a while.

I guess I should add that we are hoping to replace the carpet, but probably will stay very neutral. One of Flor patterns, such as this, is along the line that we are thinking.

I'm sorry I can't offer any suggestions, except that I LOVE that ottoman!!

But, I do have a question. Can you tell me the color yellow you used?

Thanks, blf. That is exactly what I love about this site. Honest criticism! It doesn't tie in with anything. The closest tie-ins might be the leather recliner and the fact that we used to live in Texas! Houzz shows tons of cowhide rugs these days, but maybe the rooms are more contemporary than mine. Maybe the cowhide rug in my room is just trying to hard to be different! Thank you all again! Budge and Chicory, I like polka dots. I already have two large patterns (the red floral and carpet squares), so a small/medium size pattern makes sense. Plus, polka dots are happy :) I do worry, though about a black based ottoman in front of the piano. What do you think? Would this be too boring for the ottoman? It is a muted stipe (gold, grey, ivory, beige, black). Chicory, could you photoshop that onto the ottoman, leaving the dark fringe and trim? Amysrq, you might be right about blue. Here is a pic of a textured blue fabric that I bought. It goes with the blue in the paintings and isn't shiny like it shows in the pic. Last, I understand what Chicory is saying about color weight -- and why that calls out for a darker color. Viewing the room from another direction, however, shows a dark wood side table and lamp. From this direction, wouldn't a lighter color chair with a dark pillow make more sense? Ah fabric FREEZE. I so want to move onto the next stage. Thanks.

I was hoping to see a pic of the ottoman in your room because I was so curious how it would work; but I agree with you that it would've obstructed the inlay table which has become a secondary focal point given it's placement in front of the picture window. I think you and I and our DH's are very similar I can just laugh at it. DH thinks I've put too much furniture into my LR and would always cringe if I were to consider another piece. Now, I've moved on to the garden and just planted a bunch of annuals and strawberries in a bed and DH asks me a few days later, "Don't you think you planted them too close?" I do agree, good things come to those who wait. And sometimes you do need to just wait and live in a space to see what (if anything) you need to add. I particularly find that after a party I will know if I need something or need to rearrange a room. I ask myself: Does everyone have a place to sit comfortably? Was the arrangement conducive to conversation? Did everyone have a place to set their drinks? Could we all walk comfortably around the room? Did we have the right lighting for what we wanted to do? Then I also consider how we use the room on a daily basis and are we comfortable there. None of us here on this board know exactly how you use this room. There is always a balance between decor and comfort and while we can suggest items for the former, you and your DH are the best judges of the latter.

kmcg85, I saw that thread and thought, gee, those look familiar. ;-) Yours look gorgeous, too! Nice to see the drapes paired with another wall color. Love the saloon sign. I was tempted by the matching shades, too, but I've decided that adding a band of the fabric (I'm taking apart a panel to do this) to the top of the silk Dupioni drapes I bought ages ago from PB for the LR will be enough. Well, maybe. I also need to have a half-moon valance made for the window above our entry. I have an extra silk panel I intend to use for that area and I might add a band of the print along the bottom edge. Or maybe 3 vertical bands. Or maybe ... I'm still mulling possibilities but the more I think about it, the more I like the idea of adding a bit of this fabric to the entry valance. Are you crafty? What if you added a band of the fabric at the bottom of the shades you already own? They sell 24" pillows in this fabric so you wouldn't need to buy a whole panel for this small job. Or maybe add a band of trim that is the same color as the background of the drapes? Perhaps crazy ideas but what the heck. Sometimes, great ideas sprout from crazy ideas. schoolhouse, the holidays' craziness will make the time fly by. Before you know it, your panels will be here.

I am not sure why you need an ottoman in that LR area? It is not large, and the two ottomans you have would seem to be too small in proportion to the size of the couch. You have side tables for people to use for beverages, etc. as well.

I would skip the ottoman in the LR completely, and use the round 'tuffet' in front of the fireplace.

I would look for a smaller allover print or check in the red, gold and cream, with red trim. Maybe something like this?

Welcome back deltabreeze, I remember your room. It is really coming together. I love your red lamps. I think the carpet tiles would look great in your room.

I like a chair on either side of your fireplace. I agree with les about the round ottoman being used by the fireplace and the colors in the fabric she picked out are perfect - yellow and red.

Not sure I would put an ottoman in front of the sofa, it will crowd the room. If you feel you must have something, I think it should be something the gives the room an open feeling - small oval table with thin legs? I just got an oval table for my family room and I was so surprised at how much smaller it appears in the room and how much larger the room feels. It is also easier to get up from the sofa without something square being there. Previously we had a wicker trunk for a coffee table and it seemed very bulky there. Photo below so you can see what I mean (I'll be posting this room for a critique soon).

I am still hoping for a little pop of red color on your dining room table. Please keep us posted. I love your decor.

Hello everybody and thanks for your help.

Karezz, the color is a Home Depot match of restoration hardware's 'butter' (See link below). Note, not 'butter creme', but butter.

Les and springville, I like that fabric and will look for something along that line. The reason I am exploring the ottoman approach is that many people told me (and I thought) our previous coffee tables were just too crowded. Plus, having some red on that side of the room would help. We still have the coffee tables, though.

In terms of red in the dining room, you are absolutely correct. Right now, my thinking is to get red lampshades for the chandy and perhaps a red pillow for the dining room chair that stands behing the red print uphoulstered chair.
