I think amy has hit the nail on the head! I kept looking at all the brighter colors trying to come up with an idea, and when she wrote hers, and I scrolled back up - it's perfect! We can't quite tell if the rug is gray or blue, but if you take a tiny snip of the rug fibers from it (try in a closet) AND the fabric from behind the buck to a good paint store where the staff can really advise well, have them show you the best soft colors that will blend with both. You might end up with a very 'custom' looking room, if you can pull a soft color from that fabric that will blend with both the 'buck background' and the rug, too.

I had no trouble getting Miller Paint stores to do it with the Devine line of paint. In fact, the clerk is the one who suggested it to me when I was looking for a lighter shade to match my main wall color. I used 1/4 strength "Straw" for my lightest wall. After putting on the first coat of full strength "Straw" on my other walls, I decided that was still too intense for my room. I asked them to mix some new cans for me at 1/2 strength and it is just right. The two shades of less intense straw(1/4 and 1/2 strength) work nicely together in my room. One store was able to do it easily, but I needed some more paint on a holiday. Only place open that day did not have a computerized machine to add color so we had to figure it out from the formula book. After the clerk got over his math phobia, he helped me do the calculations. We used the amount of colorant called for in a regular quart to make a gallon of 1/4 strength and double that to make a gallon of 1/2 strength. What ever you do, sample!!! Be sure to make large sample boards to try in various parts of your room under different lighting conditions. My little pouch of Devine made a small sample that looked good until I painted a whole wall. Sampling is especially important if you are going to experiment with modified formulas. Also important to note, I had to buy freshly mixed gallons of 1/4 and 1/2. They would not just dilute the full strength can that I already owned because they could not guarantee a precise mix. Thanks, all! I've had this topic on my mind as I drive around and look at the contrast trim on neighborhood houses. While I love the high-contrast look elsewhere, it doesn't feel like "me." It's how I love all the gray rooms I see online, but don't actually want one myself. We're going with Mascarpone in the kitchen to start with. If it's awful, we'll revisit for the rest of the house. We plan to use Georgian Green in the DR, top half, and Mascarpone for the bottom half/wainscoting. Other colors for the house are Philadelphia Cream, Antiquity, Calming Cream, and Nantucket Fog. I think Mascarpone will work well with those.

@Jan Moyer and @houssaon I agree. I had been looking at these dilemmas because my front door is not at the front, ha, ha. The bottom line from all the recommendations has been to emphasize the front door, not the garage doors. So I would say: paint the trim AND garage doors the same as the house. For the same reason the house numbers should be located by the front door, not over the garage door (answering your second post). Good luck with your project!
