I have the 30. I like it, it's big enough but it would be nice if it were a little bigger. I do wish I had gotten the 36. I think the 36 looks fine, not too big. I have the sink grid for the 30 and recommend it.

I have a 36" shaw sink, and I am very happy with it. To me, a sink almost cannot be too big. I have a an integrated drainboard in the counter.

I kind of feel the same way - "can a sink be too big?" lol! The total cabinet run is about 13'. Here's are a couple pics, but this shows a 33" sink with 36" cabinet. (The window can be moved, so there's space & time to tweak that stuff)

We have the 40" double sink--the left sink is larger than the right sink, giving you the best of both worlds. Both DH and I love our sink and the run of cabinets that it is in is ~13 feet.

oh no, farmhousebound you can't make me reconsider the 40" LOL!! Love your kitchen...and I love the 40". But, I did have to eliminate it bc I didn't want to make the entire wall bigger. While the trash, dw, and tall cabinet really can't go smaller, I could reduce the 24" cabinet a couple inches. But I decided that I did want it to be be at least 20". So, I just had to look away from the 40" :)

But, I will say, it does not look out of proportion at all...which makes me agree with sayde - that the 30" is big enough, but that it may be nice to have it a little bigger and go with the 36".

Here's a bad pic of our Shaw's 36". The wall it is mounted on is a 12' wall. We've got our trash pullout to the left and the DW to the right. This is an older pic so everything is covered up, no hardware installed, windows aren't finihsed.... You get the idea!

The 36" is a big sink, but I like having a large single basin for handling the big pots and pans.

Didn't mean to tempt, but if it makes a difference, actual measurementsare 39-1/2" wide :)

I originally wanted the 36" single bowl but DH said he wouldn't help w/ the dishes if he didn't have a double bowl sink, so this was my compromise!

laranbrian - your kitchen is looking great! what color are the cabinets?

farmhousebound - that is so funny bc my husband loves the double as well! He said he'll get used to whatever I have but every night when we are washing pots/pans, he likes to point out "where is this going in the new sink? are we really going to dry it and put it away immediately?" LOL!

We have Newport Brass faucets. The little one is for reverse osmosis drinking water. We don't have a water dispenser in the 'fridge and the RO faucet didn't really fit anywhere, so that's where it landed.

The cabinet color started out at SW Garden Sage, but on our cabs it's a more of a brighter green than the sample chip on the SW website. I'd compare it more to a toned down version of luau green. This photo does a better job at color rendition:

Thanks for the kind words! It's come along a little since these pics were taken (all the paper is off of the floor and counters, 'fridge is in, hardware is on, windows have finish on them). We're slowly chipping away at it all....

farmhouse, love the sink... and wish I had thought of posting a question on size! I ordered the 30", it's here.. waiting for the cabinets I have already ordered - darn! Love it, think it would have worked well in my kitchen too!

If someone has the space for it, there is nothing wrong with a huge sink. If it means compromises elsewhere, I'd skip going that big. Our sink has a much less than 30" bowl and we do just fine. It is a vintage sink with drainboard and I think that the entire length, including the drainboard, is approx 42. If you lay dishes to dry afterward, then it is a drainboard you need if you can't fit a double sink. I find that we take of dishes and don't let them pile up like we did when we had the bigger sink.

Our last kitchen was small, and we had a big sink and I would have easily traded some of the sink's size for more counters.... Since we knew we'd be ripping it all out, we made do, but it did waste space I could have put to better use. If your kitchen will be large, then it probably is not an issue for you.

I promised a photo of my 36" sink but haven't gotten around to it. I did find this photo from a few months back, and it reminded me of another point. If you are getting an oversized sink, you may want more than one faucet. That's a second faucet on the left. It comes in handy when one person is doing something and someone else wants to wash their hands, etc.

Another thing to note is where the drain is. Ours is left justified rather than centered, and it makes for a dirtier sink, esp when it is so large.

I don't think i did post a counter install photo? I should post a finished kitchen soon, even if it isn't. We are in the midst of a major row with our GC and there are a few things left undone as a result. Though they gall me, for others, spotting the punchlist items is probably the TKO equivalent of a "Where's Waldo" game.

KD did a sink wall version with the 36" sink, and I think that seems to work okay. We lose about 4" on the lower cabinet to the left, but bc the window shifts (to center the sink), I'm able to get the tall dish cabinet (on the right) a little larger. So, I think I actually like that better :) Here's a shot...

Having the window centered on the sink makes for a nice, neat feel (at least for me!). I also love the "furniture feel" that you cabs have.

Two gratuitous comments. Have you thought of making a bigger trash cabinet? Ours hold a big round trashcan, like you'd put on the curb! I would not be without it. We are a family of five and probably empty it every other day if not more. Aesthetically, its the same width cabinet as our dw/w drawers. We have the trash to the left of the sink and d/w to the right, so they are balanced.

Question - is the cabinet to the right a fridge? Or for some reason do you want a different height then the hanging cab on the left?

mtnrdredux - thanks, I like the larger sink as well! I think I'm pulling the trigger on it this week! re: trash -We have the trash in this spot that will hold 2 cans (i think), and then on the other side of the kitchen in the island are doing a larger trash can that will also hold trash and a recycle bin. I actually think I'll use that one more bc it's next to the fridge and breakfast/lunch making spot. But we'll see! I don't know that I'm a fan of having the 2 trash spots, but I think it will be convenient since the kitchen is fairly large. Plus, I have 2 boys to take the trash out...so they each get their own trashcan to be responsible for...lol!!!! The cabinet to the right of the dw is actually going to be a different style/color (like an old french gray or something) then the rest of the cabs. This is going to be the dish cabinet - plates in the drawers and glasses above. And, hopefully look like a separate piece of antique furniture compared to everything else when it's all done. Looking forward to seeing your pics as well :)

Wow, Andi_K your kitchen layout does look very similar to mine. My sink wall is about 13' as well. My sink is 33" but has much thicker sides (about 2" each), so the inside bowl dimension is 29". It's like a miniature bath tub. I think 36 is going to be humongous. I'm not sure what you plan for the drawers to the left of the sink, but have you thought about moving the trash cabinet next to the sink and swapping it with the drawers?

I have actually thought about swapping the trash and the 3 drawers and am still on the fence for that. For the drawers, I planned on putting silverware in the top, dish towels in the middle and then TBD on the bottom. And, I go back/forth on which I'd rather have in each spot bc I want the trash next to the sink, but the silverware close to the dw and kitchen table (which is to the right of the dish cabinet)!

mtrndredux--your sink is beautiful. what kind of faucets do you have and how large is your sink? do you like having the two faucets? thanks so much!

Thanks, Three. They are both Herbeau. I do like having two faucets. I notice people use the "gearshift one" to wash their hands but the other one is used most by the person cooking.

Only glitch, we had a longggggggggggg (whole house) reno and I added the second faucet about a year after I picked out the first one, and didn't realize it was taller. ((Thanks, retailer and KD, for not thinking that through either...). I tell myself my whole kitchen is bizarre anyway. ....

The plans are lovely!

I had trash in two spots in my old kitchen, and I found I didnt use the second one. If I am putting garbage in two different areas, the garbage takes twice as long to fill and sits longer before it goes out. .... Becoming malodorous. Not sure if that would be the case with your family.

I like the dish cabinet idea. If you want to make it look stand alone, you may want to chose a different crown and feet? I find cabinetmakers are a little crown-happy and they use it on pieces that would not have it if they were stand alone.

it's so funny you say that re: the trash bc I'm wondering if that's what's going to happen as well. The only thing that keeps me with both of them is that we are going to be on well/septic, so I'll probably scrape more off the dishes then I do now (so want a trash bin by sink)....and then the other trasah is by the "breakfast/lunch/used all the times by the kids" counter, and while it's only about 15 ft away from the sink trash, I don't anticipate trash making it over to the sink so easily, so I wanted one that was right next to where they were going to make their mess! KD has recommended that I split it up into using it as trash, recycle, etc. since the bin can be either 2 cans or 4 cans.

re: the dish cabinet - I did have them change the feet, but never even paid attn to the crown, so that's a good idea. It will also be a completely different color...the perimeter is the creamy white, and the dish cabinet is an old worn french grey.
