Phew, cabs in!...has anyone 'protected' them next to the range?

Oh yeah, they are in. Well, still missing some filler strips, but standing nicely.

My question is, my precious Thermador is pretty strong, (at least compared to the old ridiculous Maytag). Has anyone with a powerful range wrapped Caesarstone around the wall cabs right next to the range? That sounds weird, but my GC mentioned it. Or anything you have done to protect them from discoloring?

If your vent is 6" wider than your range you should be fine.

Some put about 12" of heatproof material such as stainless steel as a counter on each side of the range and continue that down the sides for about 6 inches as a heat shield. SS is not a particularly good heat conductor and would protect (but $$).

Hi Jennifer. Thanks so much. Our marble has held up beautifully. It is honed, not polished which certainly helps. I have had it professionally sanded and sealed once (and probably should seal it more often). I don't see many/any etch marks on it, but when I do see one I have found a fine scouring pad that buffs the mark out. I have had a few small stains and found that a little bit of soft scrub will take it right out. The only place in the kitchen where there is a slight issue is behind my range where the marble has yellowed a bit from the heat or steam. At first, I would religiously clean that area because it bothered me so much. Six years on, the color has mellowed into the marble a bit and it doesn't bother me at all. I will add that we are not careless cooks. If we use anything acidic we are very careful. I have large cutting boards that we use for all food prep. If there are spills, we clean them up right away. I have no regrets and have raised two boys from age 9/12 to 15/18 with the marble. I have no regrets and still love it. If I did it over again I would use the same marble, but I would probably do something different behind my range. My kitchen cabinets are about ready for a touch-up, but the marble looks great! cawfeegirl, I'm going to say the same thing here that I said in the other post. You are supposed to love the granite you install. If you're still not sure, it's because it's not the right one for you. Wait until your cabinets are installed or take a door sample to the yards with you. Go in without any preconceived ideas about what you're wanting and when you see the right one, you'll know it. What I wouldn't worry about is if a granite that you like, truly like will look dated. IMHO that term is way over used. Now a days, people can't afford to update every couple of years and I think trends and styles are going to be hanging around for a lot longer than they used to. I wish people would put more emphasis on using designs, styles or elements that just make them happy as opposed to worrying about how dated they may be.

All any warrant is is a measure of the confidence of the manufacturer has in their products. Hardly anyone ever receives satisfaction from a flooring warranty, or a furniture warranty either, but the fact that a manufacturer is willing to stand behind their products for that long is a testament to how confident they are that they have a good product. You have to balance that out with the actual longevity of the company so far. If Kraftmaid offers you a lifetime warranty, you can bet that they will be in business 15 years from now to fulfill that warranty. If JoeDon's Cabinet Shop has only been in business 3 years, then you've got far less chance of receiving any warranty service 3 years from now, much less 15 years from now. Even though JoeDon may have a beautiful product, statistically, Kraftmaid is a better bet. However, you may pay for for that surety with Kraftmaid. And, the only things that are covered by a warranty are manufacturer's defects. Most of those will be apparent in the first 6 months of usage, not years down the road. And the reason that you have issues down the road is usually due to normal wear and tear or abuse, not a manufacturer's defect. An example would be a corner base cabinet with the 2 hinged doors. If you aren't careful closing the door, you can scratch the adjacent door on the handle side. And if you lean on the door a bit while you are trying to find something in the interior and over time the hinges start to come lose, that's abuse in both cases and wouldn't fall under any warranty coverage.

Swentastic: Relax, your range will fit just fine. The most critical part of your project is the cabinet installation. The cabinets must be level, plumb, and in plane with each other on each side of the range opening. This cannot be overemphasized. Depending on its depth at the rear, I'd recommend soft or silicone seams at the rear rail. If you do no seams or a hard seam and there is movement and the top cracks you'll have to do a repair. If you use a soft seam, it will accommodate some movement without failure. The short seams are usually inconspicuous. As with most things, it's a tradeoff. That's what I choose yesterday as pictured.

I wouldn't use Caesarstone as your heat shield because it's part plastic. You don't want plastic getting hot for long periods (e.g. the time it takes to bake a cake). It might offgas VOCs and who knows what else. Stainless steel panels, or perhaps soapstone or terra cotta tiles on the sides of the cabinets (invisible once the stove is in), would probably do the trick best.

It is heat resistant, but it's probably pricey to have it done unless you're planning to use it for your counters too and you can eek it out of the slabs you have. I think Corian and it's various knock offs are the plastic-y counter you may be thinking of.

If it's a Thermador, then it's probably rated for residential use, which means it's sides should be insulated per code requirements. You shouldn't have to do anything. In theory. I'll let the experts weigh in on that.

If it was a commercial stove you were planning to use at home, the sides typically are NOT insulated, so you'd definitely want all the protection you can get.

For the wall cabinets below the hood? I might consider getting some stainless to go there to match the hood.

No, Corian is all plastic, but all quartz counters are part plastic. They're about 93% or so quartz and the rest is pigments and "resin," which I'm putting quotes around because "resin" means plastic. The link below explains it all pretty well, though it is a bit long.
