Dr.'d Up My Curtains Today

I've been trying to pinpoint exactly what it is about the way my current LR is and why I'm just not totally in love w/ it the way I was when it was green.

I think I've come a step closer to figuring it out: Fabric and trimmings.

When the LR was green I'd had a few different types of curtains hanging up and there is only one pair that made me LOVE the room: The green ones w/ the black and cream toile pattern and black and green fringe. The other 2 pairs were just plain ones.

So yesterday I thought pom=poms. Yep - that's what my $19.99 dollar pair of IKEA curtains needed. I love pom-poms! And I love the way these curtains from IKEA filter the light and are sort of a 'rusticy' linen like look so I figured what the heck.

I ran down to the fabric outlet and picked up 12yds of cream pom-pom fringe for $7 and this morning ran to Joannes to get straight pins to break out my sewing machine. While I was there I thought that maybe I should really wait for my mom to show me how to use the machine but I was too impatient to wait so I bought fabric glue and glues the pom-poms on while the kids ate lunch today.

Here are the results - it's just a little change but it's a big difference in what the rooms over-all look will be:

My favorite curtains ever, were some cream linen look drapes made exactly like that, with the pompom trim on leading edge. I put an antique table in the window between the curtains with some pretty plants on it and got so many complements.
That was 28 years ago. Wow. Wow.

What are you doing with your other curtains, the ones with the toile pattern? Are you keeping them?

. . . and felt compelled to add items to the list that I also completed I'm a huge fan of this! So much of what we accomplish arises spontaneously, and we should get credit for it. I didn't get as much done today, but I did get SOME things done. And part of the time, I spent "shopping" at Home Depot and BB&B--I've decided that those sorts of shopping trips (where I don't buy things, but look at lots of stuff) are "research."

We ran into a bit of a snag last night when trying to hook up our components--somehow the installers must have blasted our outlets as now none of them are working. Arguh!!!! We had our regular contractor out last week to move the plug for the charging station and he had to add a junction box. The wires were all pushed back in the wall so we have a sick feeling the installers must've nicked one with a screw. Luckily we've not made the second payment yet for the cabinets (odd they've not asked yet) so we do have some leverage to get a resolution. Who do you think would be responsible for the electrical fee to get it fixed? I'm just hoping they don't have to pull any cabinets off the wall to fix it. As for the rug/floor protector as much as I like this rug when I tried to scoot on and off a rug with my desk chair it was a PITA. I looked at the floor protectors and don't like them. I'd need two and I just don't see it working with the angled seating--unless I were to have one custom made and then there would be plastic over 1/2 the floor and first thing I see when I enter the room. Now I am thinking of using two wooden desk chairs with upholstered seats with no casters and just the felt bumpers on the bottom of the legs. I was originally thinking I'd need the wheeled chairs since we'd need to scoot out of the way to access the center drawers, but it's really not that bad and the felt bottoms allow for some slide without the scratching. So if I go that route, anyone have some suggestions for chairs? Should I look for an unfinished maple chair and see if the custom folks will stain them to match? I'm completely open to other ideas. saraschlos: Yes, I am shameless about copying good ideas and that shredder idea is a good one!

Curtains - always up and wide?

Actually, it's not a trend - it's the way high end curtain installations have been done for decades, certainly since the end of WWII and the beginning of 8 ft ceilings. The reason curtains are hung to the side of windows is so they don't block the window. Very few people have generous-sized windows in their houses these days, and most want all the light they can get in a room. Hanging them to the side, accomplishes this. What HAS been a very unfortunate trend, is to merely hand "side panels" to the side of windows, i.e. curtains that cannot be drawn to cover the window if desired. It's a way to use less fabric, and as a designer, I think it looks terrible. There are few things uglier in a room than skimpy curtains. I'd rather see bed sheets used lavishly than expensive curtains used in a skimpy fashion. The outside of windows is the same; very few shutters today are even put on hinges that could close, and they are rarely ever made wide enough to meet in the window if they were closed. Now, I'm well aware that we don't go outside and close the shutters in storms, but the scale is all off when the shutters are narrower. Yes, it does nearly always involve custom shutters, but it makes a huge difference in how a house looks. Morning thoughts from a crotchety old dinosaur...

Ahhh, reminds me of a favorite pair of curtains I still have from Country Curtains that I bought at a tag sale. I haven't used them in years but I will never part with them. Yours look very nice ;o)

Love em! Who was it not that long ago who used poms on her curtains? They were short.... can't remember much else. I liked those, too but as I remember she got slammed a bit because she was mixing them with some more modern things. I thought it worked for her and you have a great mix of things going on, too.

I changed from the green for 3 reasons:

1. I couldn't find anymore of the green toile curtains that I loved so much nor could I find the fabric to make more. My 2 front rms. look into eachother and I like to have matching curtains.

2. I really wanted to try a rich neutral palette and also thought that since we are selling the house that it would be a good idea to have that neutral palette. I didn't want 1 rm. standing out green when everything looks into eachother. I am completely anal about a flow from rm. to rm.

3. I was very much inspired by Texashotties home of neutrals and decided to give it a whirl.

Yesterday I looked out that window and saw one shell pink rosebud on my climbing rose and I thought how pretty will it all be w/ the soft grey walls, ivory fabrics, black accents and shell pink flowers in the Spring.

Msrose - I just re-read your post again and I don't think that it was so much that I liked the green better - it was just that I felt something was missing from what I currently have going on. Does that make sense?

Great job adding the trim, it makes a huge difference!
I'm about to do a bunch of inexpensive cream curtains myself, and seeing your trim is good inspiration.
