Should you paint the chimney to match?

Thanks everyone! It still needs a lot of detail work, but I think it will be nice if we ever finish it :)

Marciagaye - yes, the chimney will be painted too, but we might have to hire a handyman. DH is a little afraid of heights and painting the top of the gables has tested his fear :)

Beautiful. You know, there's a lot of emphasis now on yellow and *grey* -- might you consider painting the shutters and door a soft charcoal grey to go with your roof? I like the way the roof color is brought out more by the yellow already.

Well I was just searching around for some interesting topics and popped on this one.I enjoy this site so much. All that participaate are so kind to share their ideas and willingness to help us out.I have to say for me , I prefer the look of the brick in it's natural state.

albryant, may I ask why you wanted to paint your brick? Was there something about the red brick that can't be seen in your pictures?

We live in the south were tons of brick homes are painted - inexpensive homes right up to multi-million dollar homes. Personal preference I suppose. We live in a 1940's neighborhood where all houses look exactly like ours except for the few that have been painted. Our brick was, to us, an unattractive orange color with an unattractive ribbed texture. Had the brick been more attractive, we wouldn't have painted probably. We wanted the house to be different than the others and to play up it's Cape Cod cottage feel. We consulted a few realtors who said it's completely a matter of preference in this area. Sure, there's maintenance where there wasn't before. We get that. It's just what we preferred.

I can certainly understand that. I would like to paint my brick house, just because I have never liked the color of the brick.

I can sympathize. Honestly, when we first painted it we wondered what on earth we had done. We hated it! But decided the color was wrong and we'd like it better once we picked a less "yellow" yellow. For what it's worth, everyone who has walked past the house has said it was an improvement.

I never realized how many different shades and textures of brick there are. There is a house across the street with a great brick and I wished we had the same kind.

I understand where you're coming from. Our house is a hideous combo of stucco and brick. The brick is this yellowish tannish color that reminds me of something you'd find in a baby's diaper. I really, really want to reface the brick with a gray flagstone veneer but that will be many years off. Still haven't painted the brick yet but it's imminent.

I love it!! I am also in the South & have seen so many charming homes that color.
I am wondering if you ever thought about extending the peak above the door to make a covered entrance? I could see that done with cedar post & a metal or copper roof!! Then you could use cedar shutters. Just some thoughts - your house is already charming:)

Johnatemp - yes, a portico is very high on our list of projects we'd like to complete. We have a friend who is a contractor and one who is an architect who are working on drawings of possibilities. We HATE that ugly peak over the front door and think it's screaming for a covered entrance!

I am in the search for a good pale buttery yellow for my house. The colors I have already sampled are much clearer than Jersey Cream, which looks so dark and peachy to me on the chip. In fact, I have a hard time believing that *cute* yellow of yours is Jersey Cream.
