Can we talk about cabinet pulls vs knobs just once more?

I have been reading all the posts about this. I've been looking at countless photos. Here's the scoop. Don't ask for pictures--there are no drawers or doors in place to see!

I have found what I think I want to use for my cabinet knobs--crystal prism ball with chrome hardware. In my pre-renovated kitchen, I only had knobs on everything. (The round brass ones) But I now have some deep drawers added to the kitchen. I think I am going to put chrome pulls--the long skinny ones (not the T shaped ones, the U shaped ones). On the 30" drawers I'll probably use an 8" length, on the 24" drawers on the island probably the 6".

Here's the question: The drawers that we reused (we painted the old cabinets) used to have knobs. They were fine. There is an 18" cabinet with 4 drawers, and a 48" cabinet with 2 drawers and 2 doors below. Should I just change these drawers now to the pulls too? I am thinking that this will look more uniform.

FYI, the 36" range is between the new 30" drawers base cabinet and the old 18" 4 drawer piece. So they are not next to each other.

I am trying to remain calm and remember that it is these small details that make the kitchen look nice when done. I am trying to not let this little decision push me over the edge.

It doesn't matter what you do so long as you have a "rule". That is, a theory behind what you do. A standard kind of rule is pulls on the drawers and knobs on the doors. Another one is knobs up, pulls down.

If you've painted the old drawers and the new drawers to match each other, then yes, use the same thing on both for the reason you said. You can use the same 6" pulls as on your other smaller drawers, or you could use the 8" ones. The rule in the first case is shorter on shorter drawers, the second is shorter on the island.

What I will tell you is that I've had experience with just the kind of knob you're getting. They're not great on drawers. :-) Especially tightly fitted ones. All that tugging eventually makes the crystal come off and they're never the same after you glue them together. If your doors don't have sticky latches they should be just fine on them. :-D

I went with pulls on my drawers and knobs on my doors. I also went with a larger pull (5 inch ) so it fits my two "young men" boys and my DH's hands. They are very comfortable. I stressed and put off the decision like you wouldn't believe (well maybe you would :)I went through websites, catalogs, stores etc and could not decide so I understand your pain. One decorator I used liked to use Pulls for everything and said it helped elongate the doors but another decorator said you need to break things up a bit and use both. In the end I went with both. I did want a bit of variety.I just kept consistent with Pulls on the drawers and knobs on all the doors. Also I picked knobs that were somewhat elongated so it gave you a bit more to hold onto. I really do like that. My vote without seeing them is for the pulls on your drawers. Hope that helps a bit.

Solstice, were they taken with film or digital? They are beautiful. Coffeemom, you made me laugh! I just finished my last roll of Advantix film and I swore that was the end of that camera, even though I loved it. It's time to get a digital, but I want at least 6 mp and 10x optical zoom for a good price. Does anyone know if you really need 6 or more mps in a digital camera? My first camera was a Canon AE1 program, which I still use. I bought it in 1983 and the first pick I took with it was my son taking his first step. I love that camera. I took a quick course at the local vo-tech school on photography, but I could never figure out the f stops and aperture stuff, so I always left it on auto mode and I have albums full of great pics. I got the Advantix one Christmas since I was always complaining about lugging the Canon around. It took great pics and I loved the Advantix film. You could take the pics in 4x6, 4x7 or panoramic. I still don't know if I want a digital SLR or not. I hate to spend a lot of money on something, just to find out that it's in a year or two. Julie

I like Burt's Bees shampoo & conditioner, especially the new one "Super Shiny" because it tames my dry hair. However, there was a BB's product I tried years ago that was so awful it actually caused me pain. I'm referring to the Theraputic Bath Crystals. When I put it in the bath water my skin felt like it was been burnt alive. I couldn't jump out of the water fast enough. I've read reviews where others have had the same reaction but most people don't seem to experience a problem so I guess it depends on how sensitive your skin it. Mikasa...years ago I bought a couple of their white soup bowls open stock and loved how durable they were. So was I surprised a few years later to see how much the quality had changed when I bought an extra one. Utensils left ugly marks on the bowl that didn't wash out, even a spoon was removing the finish. I thought surely this is a fluke so I got another one and the same thing happened. Don't know what Mikasa changed but that product has gone downhill since I first bought it.

Prairie-girl, I know how you feel about not wanting to unpack, because it is easier to maintain a house with breathing room. I'm beginning to realize that if I don't miss it, don't remember I have it, then I can do without it. I never thought of myself as a "collector" or "hoarder" either. But I have a friend who religiously throws out EVERYTHING, and she thinks I keep too much around. It made me self-conscious. So now I box things up and if I cannot remember it, then next time I open the boxes, I weed things out. Most folks could live in one of our smaller homes, and do not need to add on to their home. That was the case with my mother, who added a 20 x 20 building for her craft work, then filled it up and had everything in the house packed too. It sure detracted from her enjoyment of her living spaces. So when I watch DESIGNED TO SELL or the other show with Sabrina Soto on HGTV, the first thing they do is DECLUTTER. But that is to make the home more sellable. It does give a sense of spaciousness. What I'm wanting to achieve is a nice balance between storage and function. I want space enough to store the things that I like to USE, and have them within easy reach. I like to sew but have no good spot to keep projects out unless the house looks ugly. And I like to paint with acrylics and also paint furniture, but you cannot put those things back into a cabinet if you have limited room. When you took the pics of your house and it was cozy and warm, it was probably between projects when everything was put up. Looking nice and working on a project make us all walk a fine line. Hmmmm, I have an idea for a thread, and I'll post it pretty soon. Thanks for giving me the idea, Missy! :)

If it was my house I would begin by dropping a soffit and wall from the ceiling to create a "niche" on either side of the fireplace, and create the opportunity for a true "built-in" cabinet of one design or another Finally, even though the space to the right of the fireplace is much smaller than the one to the left, I would definitely place something there so that the space doesn't appear to simply be overlooked or forgotten Yes, these two statements definitely help -- thanks. I looked at a bunch more pictures, and I understand what you're saying about making this area look actually "built in" ... and while not so many people seem to do this, I do like it better. Bpath, I appreciate the pictures, but after staring at them for a bit, I think that's too much stone for me; I think we're not seeing eye to eye on the idea of stone as an accent vs. a major player. Oddly enough, though I'd usually say, "Contemporary? That's nice in other people's houses, but I wouldn't want to look at it every day" ... but I do like that picture. The pictures you have posted show a symmetrical fireplace elevation centered under a symmetrical vaulted ceiling. But the floor plan shows an asymmetrical layout, asymmetrical fireplace elevation, and something that suggests high windows set into a shed dormer-- It's hard to tell. Yeah, I noticed that, but few online images are asymmetrical! I like examples, but they seem to be few and far between. i would make the built ins in the gr and kitchen match however i do have "mismatched" cabinetry in the bathrooms the the sinks are placed in cabinets are stained and the other cabinetry is white The difference, of course, is that you can't see the bathrooms at the same time -- but you can see the kitchen and great room at the same time. Okay, I'm all set now on the type--pulls for all drawers. BUT, now I need to know, if the back of the crystal pull is chrome, do I need to match that, or do I match the stainless appliances? Our fridge is 48" Thermador with curved ss handles. So what do I do? I was thinking chrome to match the back of the bling knob. But I find a lot more choices in brushed nickel and ss.

Do whatever you think is prettiest! I'd prefer to match the shafts of the crystals, but chrome is a silvery color, as are stainless and brushed nickel, so whatever you do should be fine. You do not need to match the refigerator handles at all, however. You could use ORB or brass with the SS fridge handles and they'll just read as different handles for different purposes (so long as they go with the rest of the finishes).
