I love these burnout "velvet" sheers, they seem so lush without being too attention-demanding. But am I being romantic? Sometimes, in person, this kind of stuff looks like cheap lingerie that I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.
Really like 'em, though.

These are real cotton organdy. I always feel safe with non-synthetics. The embroidery is probably poly or nylon.

The fabrication of these is my favorite, and if the design worked this would be my #1 choice. But I'm thinking the scroll is too venetian-2013-typee and possibly too large a scale for my colonial.

My advice is GET WHAT MAKES YOU SMILE!

Sorry for shouting, but I really believe this. Most of the time I overthink things, and when I get what I really love- it works. Then you'll love it and not just like it. :)

Since you asked, I feel that the valance on a wide rod is more dated and as you are going to the trouble and expense to update your drapery with such beautiful fabric, it would look better on a decorative rod either as stationary panels with rod pockets or rings. Also, that particular shade of blue looks very common and off-the-shelf compared to the absolutely lovely fabric you have selected for the panels. Why cover 1/3 of it up with a valance? That said, I must confess to having a some valances on the wide rods myself, though where I have them there is no space for panels otherwise I'd swap them out in a heartbeat.

Well, we did it. We finally painted the DR and I'm posting pics. We had a great Thanksgiving dinner in there and I feel the room is definitely on its way. I wish I could say I am 100 per cent thrilled, but I must admit to some second thoughts about this color. It must stay as is for now, and it is definitely on the right track, but I am second guessing my decision to veer away from the Wilmington Tan. This color, Quincy Tan, transitions better to the foyer, which directly adjoins, but it reads more green than I had thought it would. This is actually the color that used to be in there and I went with it partially because I knew how well it would transition to other rooms, and that it would also provide some variety in the house; as virtually all other rooms are shades of yellow/gold. This time it's reading green; possibly because of the different surroundings. Or, it could be because of the painted stripes we did; darker shade is flat, lighter shade is eggshell. Anyway, have a look and give me your two cents. Also, as you can see, I'm considering adding some trim to the drapes. I am liking them more and more but they still seem kind of stark to me; could use some softening or something. Any ideas, as always, are most welcome! As you can see, the color changes quite a bit from bright daylight to night time.

I love the drapes you have! I think the problem is the wall color. The soft gold in your great room would work well with both your drapes and the fireplace tile. Or maybe a warm, soft terra rosa, glazed or color-washed? But personally I like the gold. Ivory or a paler version of the gold would also work. Do some big sample boards - just some old cardboard will do - but at least 2'x4' or 3'x3'. Your windows read very high-set - that stands out as not being the usual placement - you can experiment with the height the drapes are mounted and see if a different proportion pleases you better - maybe a little higher, even almost to the ceiling. The drapes are puddling, and maybe they have a hem that could be let out - they could go higher. Or sew on a contrasting band of terracotta on the bottom. (or whatever color the inner curtains are - hard to tell in pictures sometimes.) The bit of wall between the window and the crown molding is so narrow that it might be better not to treat it as the wall but as panelling, like over the mantel. All you would have to do is frame it with short vertical pieces of flat molding over the window casing verticals, just glue it on. Paint the molding to match your trim and either do the recesses the same or to match your over-mantel recesses. A bigger rug out to six inches of the walls. Something easy to clean and with a pattern - you have children eating there. My youngest is nine, we still have spills. Low pile, no loops, not fuzzy. Something to occupy the walls will make the room feel cozier - a long window seat with a bench cushion and pillows, and cabinets underneath. Do you ever have many people to a sit-down dinner - an L-shaped banquette would give you lots of seating. Kids could play there, do their homework, look out the window, keep you company as you worked in the kitchen - put away homework and toys in the cabinets - presto clean. Also your linens and servingware not used every day. Accessories with more weight and color, more dimensionality than the plates on the wall and the pictures and things over the hearth. It really is a good dining room, good bones, good molding, good view, good fireplace, good flooring, spacious. It won't be hard to love. The fireplace is your starting point because you can't change the tiles. Then either wall color, rug, or rug, wall color, working with the tiles. THEN drapes and upholstery. Then accessories. Paint is your cheapest element. Even if you hire someone to paint, you can buy the cans and do big sample boards yourself or directly on the wall. You don't like the color? Worst that happens is you're out the cost of the sample can. So it's worth experimenting, because it will set the mood of the room.

I think the dining room rug is a little dark but I would make your other changes before replacing it - maybe it'll look okay once you've done everything else. You could also try removing it for a while and see if you like the area lightened up. If you do, you could look for a lighter rug or just leave it out. And I would also center it under the table if you can. I hate to say it but I think the new curtains might be a tiny bit too short but I am no curtain expert and don't have any in my house. I think I like the Accessible Beige or Agreeable Grey mentioned above better than Maison Blanche or Antique White, but that boils down to personal preference. I just sampled Antique White in my own house and it looks more tan/yellow than I prefer and reminds me a little of your current wall color.

I think #2 or #3 would be lovely in your room.
(Can you possibly take a picture at night when the light from outside the windows doesn't totally obscure the room. I know it'll change the way the colors read in the room, but the room will be visible.)
Anyway, I love #4 the best, have seen that fabric IRL and it's gorgeous, but I agree it's likely too big in scale for your room.
The sunflowers are really pretty, but lots more casual. So it just depends, how casual do you want your room to be? If the answer is yes, very casual, then go for it!
oh, unless #1 is a silk velvet burnout and costs an unholy fortune, then yup, it's likely to resemble bad lingerie!

I like the Organdy for a more traditional, formal room. I love the top of them and how they drape right into the pattern.

If it's a more casual room and you can make them work with the rest of your accessories in the room, and the adjoining room, and the outside, I would consider the sunflowers.

Yes, so much was the same between Horchow and Neiman I thought they had the same website.

Thanks for your advice. The graceful sheers probably represent "good taste", and sometimes I do well to step slightly outside of good taste, as with the burnout ones. But I probably would hate the cheapness of them. albeit they don't really cost any less than any of the others. Too bad, because they have more of a winter feel to me, and I'm looking to cozy things up in there.

Here's the room with sunset approaching. by this time you have to use artificial light in there.

I like all of them except the RH striped ones...they look boring. If you're going for a casual look..the sunflowers...the others are a little more formal...they are all nice though!

The sunflowers and the burnouts are both from the same ebay seller, silkndrapes. Seller is also on Etsy and Amazon.

I ordered the graceful. The pattern echoes the barley twist of the cabinet, too.
