This is terrible -- so sorry you're having to replace new cabinets.

Do you think the warping might be due to the type of door panel combined with humidity and/or dampness in the environment? Are the doors solid wood? If so, this might explain the warping and cracking -- but doesn't of course excuse it. But if this might be the cause, I agree that a new door front might be the best solution.

Of course, slight splitting on seams or a tiny bit of warping would be acceptable in this environment being so close to the water. The doors are not solid wood, just a solid frame with mdf panel in the center. I have plenty of wood furniture and other pieces that do not crack or warp. And the home has air conditioning, so not hot or humid. I should add we had solid stained doors before the renovation and never had any issues with warping then, and no air conditioning prior to reno. Maybe that's the key, a solid door would not "give" as easily. A big relief though that they have taken responsibility. Just putting it out there in case anyone else is considering this brand. The rep seems to think there are definitely quality control issues in the factory.

It's a good thing that you chose KM because they do stand behind their product. I've used them frequently and never had as high of a percentage of problems as you are having. Maybe they had a bad batch go through their line. But, they will strive to make you happy, if the issues are defects in the product. However, occasionally when we have other problems, we view everything under a microscope and find things that wouldn't be apparent to normal scrutiny. I don't mean to imply that you are being hyper critical, but perhaps some of your issues are normal ones that you are viewing as defects? I hope your KD explained the normal issues associated with choosing painted cabinets. If she didn't, I'll take a minute and give you some insight as to what to expect.

Wood is hygroscopic. It is normal for it to absorb moisture in summer and swell. It's also normal for it to lose moisture in the winter and shrink. That's why maintaining a constant humidity through a HVAC system is important for your cabinetry, trim, and flooring. If you didn't have the air running while you were moving in, the extra humidity is the most likely culprit for many of your issues. If your humidity has been controlled at all times, then there is certainly something else going on.

When you refer to "cracking" are you referring to longitudanal cracks in the solid wood that follow the grain or are you referring to the cracks forming in the paint where the stiles, rails, and panels meet? The former is a cause for action and the latter is 100% normal and should be expected to occur with any painted finish, especially in the presence of uncontrolled humidity. Mitered corner cabinets are worse about this than are mortise and tenon joined ones.

As I said, I'm sure KM will take care of you, but I wanted to make sure you were informed about how your cabinets will behave now and in the future.

Thanks for the insight Green! Thankfully I have such a great contractor/builder- he is the one with the keen and scrutinous eye. At this point in the construction I have been sporting my foggy glasses (so to speak) so that I am not scrutinizing every flaw. I just want to be finished. My builder will not accept anything to be put in "his home" that is so flawed, and the local dealer was the one who got the rep out to the home to see it IRL. Thats how bad it is. Truthfully, I would have accepted the expected "natural" flaws as long as the doors and drawers would close! Bad batch, definitly. My builder has never seen a cabinet door (maple) do this to such an extent. My full time home (also close to the water) has solid slabs, some 60" tall with not even a hint of movement/bowing (oak) and we don't always run the air conditioning. I understand painted wood behaves differently and am fine with normal movement. I accepted this when I chose a painted finish. What I got was a hot mess!

Thankfully, I am hearing all around that KM is a reputable company that stands by their product, and hopefully should have the issue resolved. If I do have to choose a different style door, I may just go with a solid recessed version instead.

How nice that a company stands by its product. Which door style and finish did you have? It was shaker, right? I remember it seemed to just work with the style you were creating. It would be a shame to change that but you have good taste so I know it'll be beautiful in the end regardless of the door style.
