Yes, they sit on the counter there. I could probably put filters in the spice cabs...Might be a little shallow for coffee unless I put a smaller amount in a Tupperware container..That might work. I also have concerns about the height of my current coffee maker. It will fit, but will have pull it out some to fill and make sure the steam doesn't wreck the upper cabinets like it has done in my current kitchen! My trash pullout is right on that end of the island, so that would work ok. We're still tweaking the island...Am wondering if I should just go with a rectangle shape instead of the 3 sided one, but I wanted my sink to at least be on an angle to have a better view out the dining room window (large pond out there)which is on the left end of the floor plan. Also am wishing I could have the best of both worlds with part of the snack area raised (for better definition of the kitchen area, beacause everything is so open to living room at bottom of plan and dining room) and part lower for bigger work area--like maybe on the refrigerator side of the island...Boy, this is even confusing me!!

I cannot quite visualize the alternate garage location, but in general anything that makes the front counter do more work seems worth considering. Incidentally, I don't quite understand the restriction of the gas riser either. If it is not being used, seems it can be removed and capped. I'm probably missing soemthing here. On the sink-dishwasher-refrigerator locations, clearly having a refrigerator that cannot be opened when the dishwasher is being loaded is going to be inconvenient, so you want to avoid that. Along the same lines, you'd also want to avoid having a refrigerator whose doors interfere with the person standing at the sink loading said dishwasher. It's not uncommon for one person to be placing leftovers in the refrigerator while another is doing the dishes. Dishwashers are rather irritating things - once opened, they tend to stay open for quite a while, occupying a 30'' by 24'' chunk of floor and preventing people from moving freely along the counter side.

My toaster oven definitely gets too hot for the cabinets and no I don't think you should put an appliance that heats up like that inside a cabinet. I prefer the toaster oven next to the coffee pot as we always use both in the morning and only sometimes later in the day. Do you drink coffee or tea- will either or both the coffee pot and the teapot be something that is going to be kept on your counters at all times too? How low to the ground are the bay windows? Maybe those things can go on their own small bit of counter at the windows? My next favorite place for the toaster is as Mama Goose has it-next to the stove because I find that I use it when I'm cooking other things - like making toast for breakfast. If I wasn't putting a coffee bar at the window, I would really want a bench or chair in that bay window...what is the side of the fridge by the pullout door going to look like- is the side going to be visible or is there going to be some kind of thin end piece? I ask because it doesn't look like there is enough space for a light switch on that wall on either side of the doorway. I prefer to have the switches right by the doorway as you walk into the room (that may even be required by code). I agree with Mama Goose about moving that dishwasher to the other side of the sink I think you will like that work flow much better.

If you make the island only 42" deep, rather than 48", as drawn, you could have a very shallow cabinet under the window--maybe deep enough for canned goods. But then you'd have space for only one seat on the short side of the island. One reason I like the range on the other wall, it is more a focal point in the kitchen.-- You'll be prepping with your back to the cooktop, and doing dishes with your back to the cooktop, no matter where it's placed. With the island flipped, you'll have a view of the window as you prep. Posting the whole house layout would help us determine traffic paths. Will more traffic be coming from the open space to the left, or from the passage on the top left? (Of the plan as I have it rotated.) If from the open space, then traffic will naturally take the shortest path to the back door--right through your cooking zone, if the cooktop is centered on the bottom wall.
