Good source for alarm clocks?

I would like to get my girls, 8 and 9, alarm clocks for Christmas (DH says I am a master at plying our kids with "non-gift-gifts").

I want them to be for bedside, so not huge. Both of them think of themselves as sophisticated, so id like them to be feminine but not childish (no princesses, fairy or hello kitty). They both like muted colors (gee, how did that happen?)

This is one of those items I feel I have seen lovely examples of, but now when I go to search i get nowhere ...

thanks, I did come across the BIg Ben one, but I wanted something a touch more feminine

i really like the ones in the link, but 75 is too much.

Function is not too important. They will probably like the grown-up feel of having a clock but it'll still be us rousing them!

Thanks for all your comments.Rrah,the fire department looked over the alarms carefully and the batteries are all new but I suppose it is possible that they could be worn out. I had hoped they would last longer than 2 years but i will look into it. Chiefneil a tandem alarm is an excellent idea and would give me peace of mind if nothing else. Green Design...these are very good questions and I can't answer all of them. Here is what I can answer. I have natural gas, I have external ventilation but was not using it in any of the above mentioned incidents and yes , my house is very tight.Should I always be using a fan when cooking with the range. I usually only use it when there is smoke, odors or I am frying some thing with a high flame.I will try to find answers to the other questions. If the problem is the range should I be calling the person who did the install or the manufacturers recommended service?

One of my favorite places for unusual, original, and one-of-a-kind home decor accessories as well as more traditional art forms are gift shops at small-town art galleries. I found it 'essential' LOL to continue my collection of hand turned wooden bowls and other wooden accessories as well as handthrown pottery pieces. I agree with Cyn that "if it is mass-produced, it isn't really all that whimsical". Some people think that prices will be high at art galleries but I've found there are good artists who show in small galleries who just want to sell so price reasonably low. Also part of the fun is in the search. My other sources for unique items have been auctions, antique stores, thrift stores, flea markets, and especially yard sales. The last does depend on location tho.

I called the Fire Marshall for Toronto after seeing this exact topic being debated on another forum (I figured better to go to the source). According to the current code, new builds must have hardwired units (with battery back-up) and be combo smoke/CO2 units - and all rooms must be hardwired. But we live in an older bungalow so the there is a variance to the code, otherwise it would cost a fortune to run electrical wires to all of the rooms. However, we do have two hard-wired smoke alarms that were installed about 13 years ago that of course do not have battery back-up - one in the basement and one on the main floor. We will have to have an electrician change those for us to hardwired combo units. There is supposed to be a CO2 unit in the hall as well - well where would we put it - except of course as a hard-wired combo unit because the hall is short and narrow. Then there is the problem with placement of the units. We have a couple of the plug-in CO2 units, but you cannot use the second half of the outlet once a unit is plugged in. And in a small bungalow we do not have that many outlets. Next there is the issue that you cannot put them next to heat source - and of course the other electrical plugs are next to the gas heat grates. The list goes on. Two weeks ago we bought 3 combo units - they were not cheap ones. My husband put one up in the bedroom and we followed every rule for hanging it. It was good for a week and then it started going off 3 days in a row - and not the chirping sound of a dead battery - but a full blown, dog annoying beep. I moved a couple of the other units that we have that sit on tables into the room - nothing else went off. I called the manufacturer and the rep said that it would appear that the unit was defective and that I should try putting up one of the other ones. Well I really didn't won't to open another unit so I returned all 3. When we purchased them there were only 4 on the shelves and all had been taped back together - obvious returns so we would not touch them. The store associate found us 3 others up top. Now we do not know if someone just wanted spare parts for their units or like us the units kept going off so they were returned. So now we have holes in the wall. I asked the FirstAlert rep if there was a least a smoke detector that had the same size bracket and he said there was - of course I can't find it anywhere. So all in all it is not easy. I really don't like the units with the 10 year built-in battery because my alarm clock was supposed to have a 10 year battery and 1 1/2 years in it went - and I did not buy it at a clearout sale. I prefer to replace the batteries myself every 6 months. I once bought 2 units packaged together and they started to chirp at exactly the same time indicating they were toast. I think each person needs to find out the requirements for their area. In the meantime, the search goes on. One thing for sure is that if the fire dept. comes calling they will make certain you are compliant.

All the way back to 1960, jemdandy? That's interesting. So you do clock repair? If so, what a coincidence. I think this little "Tiffany" clock might be the real thing. Besides having the name, the made in France stamp, and a serial number (?), it also has a few of what I'd guess are repairer's marks and dates. One looks like 12/29/02. The others I can more or less read, but don't understand. The style of it makes me think of the 1980's somehow. But I'm thinking that if it has been a good enough clock for someone else to have repaired, then maybe it is still repairable. I'm actually a bit excited to think I may have found a nice piece. This is only 3" X 2.5" X 1.375" yet it weighs 24.9 ounces without its glass. A pound and a half. I did visit a clock repair person, but he wasn't able to help me with finding an alarm clock. (I had thought, as you said, that maybe someone might have abandoned their old clock.) That visit was before I found this "Tiffany" one at the thrift store, and I'll be going to him to check my find. But even if he fixes it for me, I will still look for a back-up. ......Since looking so much for alarm clocks, my eye has been caught many times by psuedo-brass rotating pendulum clocks. I keep looking to see if they, too, might be wind up, but I only see battery ones, and the pendulums are plastic. Blah. I'm nostalgic about that kind of clock, because one such was probably the most [only] elegant item in my childhood household, and it was my job to dust it and wind it.

I think when most kids today think "alarm clock"--they think "Ipod". There are tons of options out there for ipod alarm clocks. It is a dual purpose thing, too--because many work as an ipod charger and speaker. I got my daughter one that glows in her room--she can change the color on it, but during the daytime it looks white.

I'm on my second L.L. Bean Moon Clock, in pink. It's not a hot pink but nice and muted.

I adore waking up to the "moon beam", even the dog knows it's time to wake up. lol

Only one drawback, if you don't turn the dials in the back the exact way stated, then the alarm can break. That's why I ended up replacing mine.

Lisa, thanks, I know they would love that but we really eschew giving them personal technology. I see so many kids walk around tethered to these things, and ignoring their families. We have one TV, one shared MAC for the kids, and one ipod for the whole family. We do everything we can to make it easy and pleasant to read, draw or play outside. In our area you can get away with this until they are in middle school. By that time, we may all want to ignore each other, LOL

Mtn, one thing about the clock I like is it has backup batteries in case you lose power. It serves as a great night light too because the face is lit up.

I also like that it isn't digital.

I see what you are saying about the ipod. I guess I just see it more as an alternative to a radio these days. I listened to my radio in my room a lot as a kid, and that is how my kids use their ipods. I have 3 kids, and none of them use their ipods with headphones unless we are going on a trip (like on an airplane). Their ipods stay in their docks in their rooms, and they just listen to it like a personal stereo.

They don't carry them out to the livingroom or out to dinner. If they did that, I wouldn't love it either! I have 3 kids (11, 14, 17)--and we are a very close knit family. But I agree there are some kids who do get lost in technology, and that can be a big issue for some families. Good for you for thinking ahead!

Check out CLOCKY! The alarm goes off, it drops to the floor and rolls around the room until you catch it and tun it off! I want one! They cost about $50.00. There is also a TALKY.

Definitely PB kids, maybe ZGallerie depending on your style, and to be honest, Target. My favorite alarm clock is from there - it looks great on my night stand and has a nice peaceful beep wake up.

I already found something though. It is helpful to get two things that are very similar, as they are still at that age (8 and 9) where it is a big calamity if one is clearely nicer/bigger/better (sigh). I got one with a daisy on it and one with a horse. They are pretty darn cheap so they may or may not be ugly, but I liked the size ... can always make it "with love from Santa" if it turns out disappoinitng! LOL
