I just discovered Fireclay Tile (gorgeous!) Has anyone used them?
Comments (37)Fireclay Tile is great -- I just moved from downtown San Jose (where their hq is located) and not only is the tile beautiful but the people in the showroom are so friendly. I'll have to look for photos to see if I have anything good --we used their tile on walls, floors, kitchen, bathrooms, laundry-- but we just sold that house so I might be out of luck. This was five years ago and their styles might have changed, but I'd say that if you like a very streamlined or modern look, e.g. rectified porcelain with tiny grout joints, it might not be your thing. Our old house was a 1919 Craftsman so it was a good fit. Glazes are beautiful and they have every color/finish under the sun. A lot of crazing which I love but I know others hate... If anyone's in the SF Bay Area and on a budget, I'd recommend stopping by because they also have a boneyard -- where you can get seconds and overruns for less than retail. Not as good a deal as it was 5 years ago but if you are open as to color and don't need all the trim pieces to match, you can score a deal -- I think they're selling first-quality overruns for something like $10/sq ft now. I had to forcibly stop myself from driving to the boneyard "just to look" when we finally finished our renovation. I'm so bummed I moved 45 minutes away. I got so many ideas just digging through the boneyard and browsing the showroom....See MoreAny experiences with Fireclay handmade ceramic tiles?
Comments (7)You are welcome--glad I could help. As I understand it, they use the local clay and recycled materials to create their product. San Jose is known for its clay soil, which can make gardening a challenge here. The reason the price point is higher than other manufacturers is that they can't keep all of the many custom colors that they offer in stock, so they make the tiles on a per order basis. Because the tiles are hand made, they have a hand made look and feel with all the slight variations in size, color, and the patina of hand made tile. The owner is well-known in our area and I know he has received awards for having a green product. I think they also make the old California style tiles that are used in our California Spanish style homes bungalows. The catalogs on their Web site give a good idea of their many offerings. Thanks for the compliment on my kitchen! I hung out here on the garden web during the planning and implementation stages in the 2008-2008 time frame. It took me a whole year to find the tiles for my backsplash and the time and money to finish up the kitchen. I'm mid-steam in a bathroom remodel right now, so I hang out in the bathrooms forum now. Yeah, the bone yard is awesome. Local artists go there all the time and I think they even give a class there on how to make stepping stones from the overstock and seconds there. Good luck!...See MoreNew pics: help me decide border or no border with subway tiles!
Comments (31)I just put in the Horus Art Cristalli tile in biscuit and I love it. I am awaiting the grout (which I will do in a matching color). I have honey/toffee maple cabinets in a Shaker style door, Crema Astoria granite (a creamy granite with white, black, and garnet areas, and with some subtle but not overpowering gray/silver movement). Even though I love clean lines, I chose this tile over the Tiffany (which is a straight subway) because it has a handmade appearance (the lines are kind of wavy, which go with the movement in the granite). It also has a little sparkle, which my granite does as well. I did not do a border or accent in my backsplash; I used only the HA Cristalli subways. I don't have a big kitchen - it's 10x10, only 15" from cabinet to counter. I chose to leave it plain as I want the focus on the granite and not the tile. I am so happy that I did! When I get a chance I will post some pictures....See More"Handmade" look subway tile . . . will it look dated?
Comments (43)Beverly raises a good point. And it made me chuckle. We all bring our past experience and influences to the table which lead to all kinds of unexpected connotations. Recently I saw a young couple choosing a quartz counter with lots of marbleized, swirly movement. They thought it looked current, hip and modern. To me it looked exactly like my Grandmother's linoleum (real linoleum not vinyl - that wasn't available when my grandmother did her kitchen). The linoleum was on both the floor and the counter top (complete with a metal edge). I'm sure it was very swanky back in the day. Here's an example from Cambria similar to what the couple picked out: Some people Oooo and Ahhhh . . . I think: That's my grandmother's swirly linoleum! But she turned out the best lemon meringue pie ever in that humble little kitchen of hers....See MoreRelated Professionals
