Show me your kitchen floor (Tiles Please)

I have to pick my tile this week and I am lost on which flooring to choose.

My cabinets are Kraftmaid canvas with cocoa glaze and my island is cherry autumn blush.

I will have hardwood in DR which opens up into the kitchen!

We have Mexican Saltillo floors. You will find a lot of detractors on this site, but I adore them.

The cabinets are just going in now, but here's the floor. :)

Hi Bill, I have seen mention of this Mapei on other threads and did a google search and came up with a lot of foreign-language links. Who makes it? Or better yet, can you give me a link to a website? (Also, I sent you an email - did you get it? I noticed another tile installation disaster today. Our Master Bath floor has been covered for protection until today when part of it was exposed while the double vanity was installed. The large 16" square honed Calcutta Gold tiles are not centered on any of the walls, so there are really off grout lines at the center of the vanity. It is really obvious and when I think about it I literally want to cry :( . This is our forever house and everywhere I turn, a tile job is done badly. I could really use a good referal!)

Especially your tiled showers that used a rock tile for the floor. It's most appreciated. And I can not believe I'm starting up another remodel. We've been in this house for two and a half years and have redone every room but the master bath. The kitchen was a year long project and looks gorgeous. This bathroom was supposed to be one of those rip out the tile, replace the toilet and vanity types of deals. $1500 cost, maximum. Now we're talking about tiling the floor in carerra marble (any cheap sources welcomed, PLEASE), tiling halfways up the wall, tiling the shower. Building in some linen cabinets. Granite topped cherry wood vanity. Someone please save me. I'm cheap by nature (entire kitchen remodel should've cost about $30k, I whittled it down, with the same materials, to $12) so another remodel may do me in.

Motherof3 I am a mother of 3 too and have also used variations of that for user names, etc.! So we think alike, especially considering that you like the natural stone! There is no question that marble is higher maintenance than ceramic or other materials. I have been living with the new bathrooms for six months and this is what I can tell you. First, we are most definitely not people who are going to squeegee the shower every time we use it. But since I want the shower to remain nice, this is what I do. First, the bar soap is outlawed because you can't use cleaners that will remove the soap scum and in my view, the specially formulated cleaners (like 409 for stone) are pretty useless. Second, we put in a handshower and we do spray down the shower with it after each use. That is easy because we continue to run the rainhead and the body sprays while we run the handshower so we don't stand in there naked and freezing which would discourage compliance! The handshower is key!! Third, we have no door, so that reduces mildew issues. We do use a mild bleach solution every week, which takes care of mildew and cleans the grout. Where a bit of soapy film (DH cheats a bit on the soap rule I think) builds up around the bottom course of tile, I use a tiny bit of soft scrub very sparingly in place of the useless stone cleaners. Finally, during the past week, I have noticed a bit of rust around the drain, where the water sits a bit before the shower dries out. I used a bit of BKF on it and now, after I shower, I dry off the floor around the drain by just throwing the bath mat into the shower and leaving it there until the next shower. I am willing to do that much. With those caveats, I have to say that I am loving the bathrooms. There is nothing quite like marble. It is so soothingly spa-like. I smile every time I go in there! suzatwork: i have to say your floors have very much the same grain and variation in tone as my highly-coveted black walnut. they're stunning! i'm wondering how they take stain, since i'd like darker floors? my plan is to go with the walnut but i'll have to get some samples and check the amendoim out. i'll have to look it up, but also assuming this species would be harder than walnut... hmmm... GREAT! more for me to think about! thanks for posting your gorgeous floors.

Ahhhh.... tile! I lost many a nights sleep over my tile selection. There are hundreds if not thousands of choices! Take your time if you can. It's easy to get overwhelmed. Bring the tile samples to your house. Look at them next to your cabinetry, countertops, and adjacent flooring. My tile looks totally different in my house than it did in the shop.

By the way, we put warming mats under the tile so it won't be cold. It was my prerequisite for going with tile!

Here's my yet-to-be-finished mudroom with my tile. I wanted a real stone look and definitely wanted a rectangular tile for the pattern. I ended up with Naxos Pietra Sacra in celio. It's a warm taupey brown with a lot of variation. I will tone down the grout for the kitchen. This grout turned out much lighter than I wanted. Good luck!

Don't know if you can see our floor tiles well enough in this photo. Our cabinets are maple; granite is typhoon bordeaux.

Porcelain tile 18" x 18". Cabinets are maple with a chestnut stain.

Laurie, again I LOVE your tile and when I am ready to do my kitchen, I am going to find a Lowe's that sells the tile.

I am going to have to buy two reducers for my floors right now in the kitchen due to having Linoleum there. But I am not ready to remove that flooring until I buy a new dishwasher which looks like it has to wait until next year.

How thick is the tile? I wish I could buy it now, since I have a feeling it will need a T-molding with my wood floors and then I will have to remove the reducers and buy T-moldings. I wish now I went with bigger tile in my foyer areas since I am finding out how much I dislike grout even when it is an Epoxy type of grout.

Since I lost most of my old email when my hard drive died at 3:15 PM on 06-15-09, will you let me know the exact name of the time, so I can print it and save it to my new hard drive?

We have cherry cabinets, mandarin orange stain, coffee glaze cabinets. Our floors are a beige porcelain tile, 20"x20".

lynn2006 - We purchased the tile from Lowes in April 2008. I believe it's made by a company called Master Tile. It's called Pietra Series/Bone. It was $2.45 per sq.ft. It is not rectified. The grout is Keracolor U Ivory #39.

We installed the tile on top of our old sheet linoleum which was securely glued down & not peeling up anywhere. DH figures our Lauzon engineered wood flooring will need t moldings as opposed to reducers in the two openings where the tile meets the wood. He's prepared to use reducers if it ends up better that way..we'll have to wait & see. Wood should be delivered next Friday, hopefully.

The thickness of the porcelain tile is 1/4".
