Might not have been the same glue, but we had a similar tile under square linoleum type tiles. I used a green scrubby, clorox clean-up and very hot water with occasional abbrsive cleanser. We were told there is an adhesive remover at home depot but this worked fine with lots of scrubbing. Also, let the hot water puddle and soak for 10-15 min on an area first to soften the glue. After trying to repair the original floor, we ended up removing it and replacing with a similar new tile because of a big spread crack and slope at the toilet end of the room. Have you tried any of these? You will be able to get some of it off by ironing it onto a small stack of paper towels. Sometimes freezing it with ice will allow you to peel it off. If a sticky residue is left, use Goo Gone, a commercial product available in sewing stores and drugstores.

"Spic 'n Span" is TSP, or at least it used to be. The thing is that a lot of localities (states?) have outlawed phosphate detergents, since they are very polluting in the water. I know that in New York I can't get real TSP because of that, and hunting around for it (unless I'm willing to drive to other states) isn't going to help. Googling around I find this from the University of Colorado: "In the end, local needs for immediate action to curtail eutrophication coupled with scientific, judicial, and popular support resulted in the patchwork of legislation the Industry had feared. By 1985, jurisdictions which had enacted phosphate bans included New York, Michigan, Indiana, Vermont, Minnesota, Dade County, Florida, Akron, Ohio, and Chicago Illinois (footnote 257 in Fleming et al. 1986). Typical are state statutes which limit phosphate content for certain types of detergents and in certain areas. For example in Pennsylvania, the Water and Sewage Phosphate Detergent Act of 1989 and amended in 1992 (PA ST 35 P.S. §§ 722.1 - 722.3) affects "all counties partially or wholly within the Susquehanna River Watershed or in the Lake Erie Watershed." This Act prohibits the manufacture, sale or distribution of any cleaning agents containing any phosphate, except contained incidentally during manufacture. But excluded from this ban are cleaning agents used in dairy, beverage and food processing equipment, in hospitals and health care facilities, in agricultural production, by industries for metal cleaning, in biological and chemical research facilities, and those used in the household for cleaning windows, sinks, counters, stoves, tubs and other food preparation surfaces and plumbing fixtures. Dishwashing detergents are allowed to be up to 8.7% phosphorus by weight." I guess you can still find phosphates if you look, if you're not in the states mentioned. Look at dishwashing detergents. But if you use detergents for automatic dishwashers, wear gloves! That stuff is extremely alkaline and will burn you in high enough concentrations.

Hi all, Thanks for continuing to play with me. I'm taking some of your advice and posting a photo board without the rug. I'm really not a brave person when it comes to decorating and the "black" dining room is really out of character for me. My home is very boring in other aspects, hence my desire to have the same drapes in both the dining room and the study across the hall, which limits things some as the dining room is black and the study will be a blue/green/gray. Both rooms currently have that same brown/cream/gold rug also. When I first started on this decorating journey is was with the intention of ivory drapes. But while at the store looking for a sample I came across these blue/gray ones which I really liked with the wall color but not the chair and rug. (You can see both the ivory and the blue in the photo below.) Then I started looking for rugs and found the one pictured here, however I decided as much as I like the color of the bluish drapes I didn't like the pattern that competed with the chair pattern. Sooooo, when I found the stripe I thought, EXACTLY and I still really like it. I'm going to try to get back to the fabric store and buy 1 yard just to live with for a few days. Otherwise, I think I may just have to go with the ivory or an ivory stripe like cami's above so that it will work in both rooms. I'll keep looking at fabric in my spare time though. Hopefully something else will catch my attention AND be in my price range....
