granite countertop and template

We're in the middle of a kitchen renovation. All of our base cabinets have been installed. We called the granite store to set an appointment and was told that we must have our appliances in place. We have a u shaped kitchen. We have a stove with just 3 inches of granite to the right of the stove. Our contractor never told us that we needed the stove in order for the granite to be measured. He called the granite store and was told we should send them the specs. We already have the wood panel installed allowing for the 36 inch stove. The small piece of granite would be installed on top.

Now we're not sure what to do. Our stove won't be available for several weeks. In other words, it is enough to have all the cabinetry, panels and the necessary measurements?

I did not have my appliance installed during measurements, templating or installation. My appliances were installed a week later. Hope this helps.

Maybe it is a Southern CA thing, but we too did not have any of our appliances in place when the granite was measured & installed.

Following up with jeffinmontery, there is a company where I live that has the granite tiles and accessory pieces. I have a Formica countertop and asked about using the granite tiles. The real issue is roughing up the existing surface so it will accept the mastic to hold down the tiles. It would also require removing the sink and any build in appliances such as a countertop burner unit so the tiles fit under in these areas. You will also need to be able to cut the tiles to fit properly around the sink and any built-ins. Now, we have priced having our countertops replaced with full sheets of granite. $2,500 more or less. Using the granite tiles, probably $250 plus the cost of mastic and grout so maybe $300 and the place I mentioned has a nice selection of colors. Good luck.

Depending on where you live, stones are generally around 2cm or 3cm thick. If 2cm, then a subtop is needed under the stone. So with 1" = 2.54cm: 2cm = 0.787" 3cm = 1.181" These are averages with actual slab thicknesses around those numbers.

Joseph Corlett - I think the posters on this thread advocating being present at the templating are not talking about the homeowner being at the house while the fabricator copies cabinets and walls. We are talking about the subsequent process of choosing which parts of the slab go where. This occurs at the fabricator's shop. So for example if there is a colorful chunky part of the stone that the homeowner wants showcased on the kitchen island, the homeowner and the fabricator will outline that during the templating process at the fabricator's. Conversely if there is a part the homeowner does not want, such as a resin pool on a slab of quartz, that part can be cut out for the sink or simply not used. Here is a pic of what I mean, though it's not mine, just a photo on the Internet. I've done this sort of layout several times for different kitchens. It's taken place at the fabricator's shop. In this photo it appears the homeowner wanted a long expanse of counter without the chunky colorful part, and the layout was done accordingly. That slab could have been cut completely differently; if the homeowner is present during this layout, his/her preferences are made clear and it's a collaborative effort. We have seen many times on this forum that when a homeowner doesn't take part in this part of the templating, there are often problems. Even if the fabricator has a lot of integrity and wants to correct any issues, it may require locating another slab and starting over.

Well, I am in middle CA and they wanted everything in before they templated for the granite. My granite guys are very picky. They want the templating to be perfect. I had to wait for my appliances (Lowe's screwed up and sent me the wrong stove after I ordered the right stove three months earlier--then my stove was on backorder for another month and a half--Lowe's and I came to a resolution on that one, thank goodness), but I had to wait until I had the stove that I wanted in there before they templated. They only want to do it once and not be "short" on the granite. Sounds like you have a good granite company and they are concerned about doing the job right the first time. Any way to get your appliances quicker?

Our appliances had to be purchased before the granite was templated so the granite people could take very accurate measurements. The granite fabricators measured for the sink faucet holes, the sink, the cooktop and the cooktop downdraft (I'll have a wall oven so that didn't figure into the granite template). I was told by my appliance store that I could NOT have the appliances installed until I had the granite installed. My granite just went in yesterday and I'm having appliances installed on Friday.

I do not need my appliances in place, although they are here sitting uninstalled in the mudroom. The kitchen cabinet maker said emphatically, not to install the rangetop until the fabricator makes his template. He is doing that tomorrow. I live in NJ.

We did not have our appliances in place for the measuring, templating, or for installation.

If your stove is a "conventional" slide in range that
requires a 30" space (side to side) you should be fine..

However - Many stoves nowdays are the "built in" look
that requires a strip of stone at the back between the
wall and the back side of the range - IF this is the
case with your stove, I can see why your Fabricator would
want the stove to be on site, because models vary, and
guys want to do things right the first time (I know I do...)

Since your range is requiring 3" on the right of the stove,
but NOT the back side - that is a little out of the norm
(as far as I have seen in 23 years of doing slabs)...BUT
this IS a remodel - Right???That would explain the 3" piece...

Southern California here - my dishwasher and refrig were here (we reused them from the old kitchen) but the range and OTR MW were on order. My granite guy, with our GC, looked at the specs for the range before templating. But the appliances were about the LAST things into my kitchen, at least a week after the granite came in.
