Geesh - *you people* (like that moniker??!) who can make slipcovers like that are so impressive in my book! That room is just lovely.

1. I'd almost say a square coffee table but then to serve all seats it would have to be huge. Which seats do you want served by the coffee table? Are you going to have a small table between the chairs at some point?

2. Can't see the lamp well enough to comment - you need some sort of light there but perhaps something very thin profile and arching (like a contempory pharmacy type floor lamp) rather than a table lamp? Gorgeous table shape, btw.

3. I love the idea of a fabric seat on the leather sofa - but I'm not a leather person at all and some people love it. Love the idea of a ticking in neutrals - kind of a rough hewn ticking if there is such a thing.

4. I don't care for the idea of the trumeau mirror - competing styles and shapes - I think you need something more organic.

You made those yourself??? Wow can we have closeups? pretty please? How did you do the closures? They are amazing and I love the oatmeal linen. How hard is linen to work with? awesome job!

Dlm: Maybe a rectangular mirror covered in driftwood? This would be cheap since I can do it myself :-) I love that pedestal table too - it's made of zinc and I'm a sucker for anything zinc. :-D

coopperbailey: the chairs do not have zippers. They are just pull-on. I do a tight skirt (no pleats) for a more modern look. I don't think my work are so fantastic because toward the end, I got kinda tired. :-D The sofa has side zippers on both back sides. I was thinking of doing covered buttons but the zippers are so much easier/fastere & nobody is going to see the backside anyway.

Wow - you sewed those slipcovers yourself? That's amazing! If I could sew like that, every surface in my house would be covered in slips! I love the oatmeal, actually. Good choice - it's a softer look and less forgiving. My dining chairs are slipcovered in ivory linen and they show everything.

I love the zinc trestle table. The lamp looks great.

For the coffee table, have you thought of using a rectangular salvaged wood/metal table? It would look great with the zinc table and your entertainment console.

Just wondering if you have ever considered flipping the use of the room?

I could see the couch under the front window, the two chairs on either side of the fireplace, the loveseat opposite the fireplace. The console with the tv moved forward as the divider between the rooms. On the back side, a standing decorative paneled screen to hide the back of the console and the tv, and create the sense of a mini-wall between the two spaces.

Then the DR table and chairs on the other end of the room, a great mirror or piece of art on that end wall. Sconces on the wall, and perhaps a drum-shaded pendant chandelier over the table.

Okay, back to the original questions.

1. I see a square coffee table with your current configuration, to give the most benefit to those seated on the two couches. Second choice would be round, but in either case I would think about glass-topped, to keep the area from feeling too heavy and out of balance with the DR end of the room.

2. Can't tell about the lamp, it is too hidden, tho it does appear a bit skimpy Same with the pedestal lamp. A shade will help that, but both still look kind of delicate compared to your furniture.

3. I am not a fan of leather couches with fabric seats, but if you must, I would do something with some substance and texture. Linen and ticking feel too light, velvet too formal. A heavy matelasse would work.

4. I don't see a trumeau mirror fitting in with your transitional style space.

Also, if you leave the room arranged as it is, you need more lighting in the seating area, and another table.

I would add a table and lamp between the two chairs, a pair of wall lamps or sconces on either end of the console.

I would also love to see some darker pillows on the slipcovered couch to balance the darkness of the leather couch.

A great, light-filled space. Lots of potential and lots of good pieces to work with already!

Les: I wish I can switch the room!! Then I could put a big hutch in the back wall to display my china *sigh* Unfortunately, the kitchen is right off the dining table area so it makes more sense to arrange it this way. Plus this way the kids can watch morning cartoon while they have breakfast.

(see floorplan -- our floorplan is the one w/ "super family room". The kitchen's nook is tiny that's why I use the space in front of the fireplace for the large dining table. )

I can't have glass table in this room because we have small children & they have a lot of play dates. Also, my DS2 (2yo) likes to use the surface for his trains track so I don't think a glass table would be practical.

You are so right about adding throw pillows...I just haven't gotten that far. :-D Also, I'm waiting to see what fabric I'm going to use on the leather sofa so that I can coordinate the throw pillows better. I'm thinking of using a quilted linen, or burlap-like linen (coarse texture), do you think it would work? Matelasse would be a good option too.

I'm thinking of adding a table (maybe a trunk) between the leather sofa & the armchair -- I don't think we have room for another table between the 2 chairs.

If you don't think a trumeau mirror would work there, do you think I still need a mirror there (over the pedestal table)

Didn't think of putting lamps next to the TV but now that you mention it, that is a great idea. I'm thinking of mounting the TV on the wall in a wood frame (painted to match the console) -- do you think it's a good idea?

Have you considered two "cubes" vs. one long coffee table? There are a lot of rectangles in that room and that might be a different shape. Also, very moveable should your kiddies want to shift things around in there. Sorry, can't suggest a material, but maybe something with texture (wicker, rattan, wood with lots of movement)...

Gorgeous! You did an amazing job on the slipcovers! That is quite an accomplishment since most of us have trouble threading a needle or sewing a straight line. LOL!

thank you for your compliments!! If you can sew a straight line, you can do slipcover. It just takes a lot of time & patience.

metromom: the paint color is Fawn by Farrow & Ball. Sometimes it changes to grayish green, especially at low light.

Reg. coffee table: I think the rectangular one will clash with the tv console and would be a bit much...I like the round coffee table...Or perhaps an oval one or like fillagirl suggested, two cube ottomans.....

I love your slipcovers, TV console, and paint colors. What a pretty starting point for you. So much potential. An almost blank slate.

I agree with Les that room would be fabulous if you could make it work flipped but, it sounds like you can't so I understand.

So here are my ideas to bounce off of you....

1. I would get a square or rectangular coffee table. something fabric covered or tufted would allow you to bring in some more color or pattern to help the leather couch blend in more with the other furniture. And that would be kid friendly. I put wood trays on my fabric ottoman so you can put glasses down on it. You can use sunbrella or outdoor fabric if you are worried about the kids. Might even be able to find something on CL to do this with since you can slipcover. Below I put some examples I found.

2. I love that lamp but, IMO it is too small on that table and for the scale of the furniture. Maybe you could use it on the TV console. I think you need some taller objects to break up the horizontal lines in this room and a taller lamp on that table could really help that.

3. I love trumeau mirrors but, what I am thinking and this is totally my opinion.... You need to decide on what style you are going for. The slipcovers, the painting over the fireplace, and the console could all be french country, rustic, beachy casual or even a more formal but, the the leather couch changes the game a little. Maybe you are going to move toward the transitional styble or Pottery Barnish style so a tremeau wouldn't fit in. You would have to replace the leather couch or slipcover it to match the other furniture to use a treameau.

Now for the unsolicited advice.

1.
The sofa being off center on the window will impact how anything else looks on that long wall. I know you have it like that so the person sitting there can see the TV. I understand that b/c I always seem to have some furniture in my family room that can't view it well. You can do some type of random grouping over that table area of say round mirrors or objects related to the other room accessories. Even a grouping of pictures on the vertical to get some height in there and throw off the off balance of the sofa placement.

2. Once you decide what style (and you may have already) want the overall room to be and then buy coffee table, lamps, wall hangings, accessories to match that. Then we can suggest some sources and provide inspiration pics related to that style.

3. Agree with Les also on putting a small table and maybe a lamp between those 2 chairs. One of my favorite decorators says to always have a table within reach of each guest so they can put their glass down somewhere. Even a garden stool like the one in the pic I put below in a color would be good for drinks to sit on.

4. I also see some kind of large plant in the corner TV wall would give some height and again break up the horizontal.To me you need some taller items to break up the long room. Maybe something on either side of TV?

Is there room behind the leather couch to add a sofa table behind there to put some lamps or something on? That would also help define the space between the 2 areas and you could put taller items on it.

Throw pillows would finish it all off with a little texture and or color if desired. Maybe pull in the blue from the dining chair slipcovers and the painting?

Maybe 2 prints on either side of the TV would look nice? or a couple of small dining size chairs on either side?

I'm trying to remember who posted a picture of their "big honking round coffee table" recently. I think a round table larger than the one you have there currently would look good. :-)

Kimmi: Thank you for the inspirational pictures and lots of good advices. The leather sofa is my biggest nightmare because I am not usually fond of leather anything (excpt purse or shoes LOL) :-D It's practical for the kids right now, but eventually I hope to replace it with another sofa, probably something from Anthropologie which is the layered, bohemian look I'm going with for this room. In the meanwhile, I hope a bench fabric seat would soften it a bit.

The off-centered window on the left wall drive me bonker too! But I can't center the sofa under it because there is not enough room for the long slipcovered sofa to be centered under there.
