cherry color cabinets, acacia floor, fun granite?

I have been lurking for a couple of weeks and finally registered. My earlier attempt at a post failed on Monday :D

We bought a house a few months back and unfortunately for me, I found this forum a bit too late. A lot of stuff has already been done :(

I am going for cherry colored cabinets. I had a vision of a rather "plain" hardwood floor with a fun (bright color, big flowing pattern) granite on the island. (I will try to post a pic soon!) The rest of the countertops would be subdued and so would the backsplash... Basically, the island top would be the star.

The kitchen is an L with a 7.5 X 4.5 island (one corner is curved). Opens to living area. Please bear with me as I don't have pics online yet!

The twist in the tale is that I have fallen in love with natural acacia. The patterns in that wood were too hard to resist :) Given that it is a bolder pattern, should I now go for a saner granite option? Something that co-ordinates with the cherry cabs and subway backsplash?

A couple of other questions about space margins:

- There is a door to the patio. How much distance should I leave between the door frame - end and beginning of the cabinets? I don't want to waste space but at the same time it should not look crowded.

- There is a 4' window above the sink. Again, how much space between window frame and cabinets?

- Would a 3" space on either side of the chimney hood be enough? I have a 30" gas cooktop and 30" hood.
