20 gauge stainless sinks
Comments (4)While 18 gauge is considered 'better' because it is thicker, 20 gauge is fine in my opinion. When I remodeled my last kitchen, I got a 20 gauge Kindred, and it was excellent. That Kindred replaced a 33 year old builder's grade sink, which was in fabulous condition, I only replaced it because I wanted a deeper and more modern looking sink. I would not hesitate to get a 20 gauge from a good manufacturer....See MoreDo 16 and/or 18 Gauge Steel Sinks Dent?
Comments (2)The lower the number (or gauge) the less likely for denting (the harder it is). You can dent anything :) Just ask DH who has done a number or two on my car :oP But as sherilynn notes from her iron skillet experience, 16 gauge sinks are pretty darned tough. Worst case scenario...a stainless manufacturer can get a dent out of anything...but would it be worth the cost once installed???? Maybe not, maybe, just depends on how hard you throw that skillet I guess :)...See MoreDid you get the free 18 gauge sink? Is a sink grid worth $40?
Comments (12)At first I wasn't sure I liked my grid. It seemed I spent a lot of time chasing bits of food down the drain that would have been easy to just direct with my hand. The idea of gunk on the underside bothered me. Now I like it. I don't care if my SS sink gets scratches. In fact, the little feet of my grid have made tiny little scratches. What I like the best, and which others also mention, is the grid gives you a relatively flat surface above the bottom of the sink, on top of which you can set things to dry while the water sloshes down below. I often dry things there and the criss-cross makes it easy to stack many cookie trays on end. As for cleaning, I do this once a week: Take my grid out of the sink and give my sink and good scrub with Ajax (or the cleanser of your choice). Then I put the grid in upside down and scrub with Ajax, flip over and scrub the other side. Then spray rinse. Takes me maybe 5 minutes. I got a positive reveal on my sink, never knowing that the right size cutting board will sit there. I never do that, because I too would forget and turn on the water full blast and wet myself....See More20 gauge Kindred sink help!!
Comments (9)Mary, MRDirect is another shopping alternative. They have a lot of 16 gauge sinks at very reasonable prices, many under $100. Esp. since you want an undermount, I'm presuming that it will be installed in a solid surface where it's not going to be easy to change at a later date. Sinks & faucets are the hardest working 'appliances' in your kitchen. It's easy to upgrade faucets but replacing a sink involves so much--disposals, drains--and may be next to impossible in an undermount situation. (Does your sink base have a face frame that narrows the cabinet opening or a vertical stile between two doors?) IMO, easier & much cheaper to get it right at the get-go even if it means a little backtracking right now. As others have already mentioned, I encourage you to give a lot of thought to getting a single bowl sink. Much better to have one really roomy sink vs 2 skimpy bowls, IMO.
