pot rack OVER stove or next to it?

Hi. Me again trying to embrace my kitchen.

I have (sigh!) a downdraft range on a peninsula. I'm going to hang a light over it because it's dark. I also want a pot rack.

Soooooo is it done to put a (lighted) pot rack directly over a stove? I promise to actually install it in a stud.

Sure. It was done by me, so yes, it's done. Mine was in a compact kitchen over my old 4'-wide Wedgewood stove, very functional, got lots of wish-I-coulds from visitors, and I loved it. If I had room to put it to the side, though, I might have because it got pretty dirty pretty fast within my 5'2" reach (old bungalow with the fan in a hole in the ceiling above :). Not that it was much of a problem even in that situation because nothing was there just to be decorative, but sometimes people do want to hang stuff for show and not have to always be polishing it up.

Why not? There are lots of great pictures and I think it would look wonderful! :)

This is probably bigger than what you're looking for, but I think the key is to not have the pots too crowded, on the pot rack.

We've got the farm thing going, too. Dust is an ever-present "friend" here. I decided to post a picture of our beam when I had the pots hanging from it (please excuse my clutter, LOL) We're working on getting more storage built in to the kitchen, but it's not done yet. Our beam is 8' to the underside, and I simply hammered some nice strong long-shanked nails into it to hold the pots. Function all the way. : ) The pots were just high enough for us to walk under. Before you invest in a rack, you might want to measure and see just how far the pots would hang down after the rack was installed. I have a hard time feeling comfortable with objects in my head space-and I'm only 5' 4"! At 5' 10", your view may be through the pots rather than under them if the ceiling is 8 feet high.

Hope you can live with inevitable marks. We have blueberry jelly stains on ours now. If you want a showplace kitchen could you inset a section of something fireproof into the butcherblock? A glass or ceramic piece for example? We have butcherblock on both sides of range and laminate elsewhere. We know that we need to put hot stuff on the rangetop or a hotpad or such, but somebody else might not. That's the chance we take. We have a pull-out work surface right there, which we put hot cookie sheets and such on. If it gets burned, it will be cheaper to replace than a countertop yet we might not bother. (We burned one of our pullout boards in our old kitchen. Ugly, but we could push it out of sight while continuing to use it daily. We finally turned it over and kept using it.) Life's too short to obsess about these things. The jelly tastes great.

Tammy, I personally think your idea is a good one. I lived in a custom home-3900 sq. ft. and had my microwave put over the cook top with intention. Loved it!!! Made cooking a breeze. I entertain a lot and have tons of company frequently. It worked well. We're currently building another custom home and I'm putting my microwave back over the stove again. This will be my 3rd microwave over the stove. It is vented outside our home. I have never had problems with this and I've had it for 16 yrs. I think you're a smart cookie making use of the space you have and dressing it up a bit too. I like unusual things and really don't like being like anyone else or having my home look like anyone else's. It's easy to go with the crowd but more fun to stand out and do what you love and what suits you and your style.

Thank you to all for your input and ideas. I have much to think over now as I had always thought that I wanted a pot rack, but my husband agrees with the idea of dust being a problem along with the fact the he fears it will block the light and be a head knocker for some of the taller family members. A lot of excellent points have been made that I had not thought of, such as what the bottom of my pans will look like after some use. I have been collecting some stainless all-clad and a few copper pieces that I wanted to try and display in some manner. I have not used these pieces yet because I'm saving them for when we get moved into the new house, so they look nice and shiny now but down the road I'm sure they'll start looking quite weathered. Gonna have to study on this one for a bit, but I will post back when I figure it out. And thanks again for your well thought out responses. I'm so thankful that I found GW at just the right time as I'm sure I'm going to have plenty more questions for you guys as this build moves forward.

Thanks! I guess I was thinking it might be dangerous from dropping stuff? But I don't like my stove anyway. :P

The 5'2" reach though...I'm not that tall so things probably would get gunky. The spouse would bang it as well maybe. I do have a spot next to the range.

Turns out the spouse is skeptical of the whole concept though. Seems to think our pans aren't showy. Spouse might have a point...

fori - we just got pots on our lighted pot rack and I think it looks great! And our pots are definitely NOT showy! The pots are Tools of the Trade store brand stainless from Macys that I bought nearly 40 years ago! Our potrack is not over burners. Over your range I would be more concerned re: reaching over the burners when lit and the pots and rack getting really gunky from cooking directly below it. I would go for next to the range and do something else to light the range (recessed?).

The potrack has 2 halogen puck lights, one is blocked by the pots.

I had that setup in our old house, and I did like it. I'm only 5' tall, and it was easy for me to reach. I never dropped anything on the smooth cooktop. As for cleaning it, well, I honestly didn't do that very often. I'd dust it, but only took down to really clean it a couple times a year.

In our new house, I have big drawers under a cooktop, and LOVE this setup much more.

I would never put a pot rack over the cooktop unless I had abasolutely nowhere else to put my pans. I love them but think the pot rack and pans would get dirty much faster hanging over the cooktop. Especially if you stirfry. :)

I really don't mind the look (Joyce, you better have a darn good reason for leaving that lovely kitchen--oh, I see. That OTHER lovely kitchen!) but I'm thinking it might not be quite so practical, especially with the spouse being uncomfortable about it. (I'm so considerate!) It would be extremely visible from the living, family, and dining room (I'd like to add an S after "room" but someone went crazy knocking out walls in this house.)

This would be "temporary", in a somewhat dysfunctional kitchen. The type of temporary that could be months or years.

I do see some spots for hooks on cabinet sides though. Maybe I could clear out some skillets...
