I have my dishwashers on either side of the main sink, so have a 'law' against dirty dishes being left in the prep sink. It's supposed to be clean and available at all times for hand washing, veggie washing, pot draining, pitcher or pot filling, etc. While baking or making smoothies, dirty utensils can sit there temporarily while the project is underway, but then they are to vacate the sink. I don't want to dodge dirty dishes while prepping and that's why I wanted a separate cleanup area. I can't say my 'law' is always adhered to, but that's how I want things, according to how my kitchen layout is supposed to work. I don't ban raw meat or anything like that...Just am careful to clean it well after any raw meat exposure.

We will have one Fisher Paykel dishwasher drawer to the right of the prep sink. This will ensure that prep utensils are cleared as prep continues and no one is tempted to leave them for later. Also when we are empty nesters this will probably also be our clean up sink and main dishwasher because we know we'll only fill up a big dishwasher about every 3 days with just the 2 of us in the house.

The cleanup sink is in a completely different area furthest from the great room for several reasons. First, we often just want to relax with guests after the dishes are cleared. When they are removed to the far end of the kitchen they can be hidden in the deep farmhouse sink and done when more convenient. The prep sink will then be available for water for coffee and the prep island for setting out desserts. Secondly, the cleanup sink is in an area where many people can work efficiently for a big clean up effort such as for Thanksgiving.

The prep sink is really "my" sink and is part of the main work station for everyday cooking. As rhome does, I just make sure to clean well after raw meat is anywhere in my kitchen so the prep sink will be using for meat as well as veggies and fruit. Sorry for jumping verb tenses back and forth. The kitchen doesn't fully exist yet but it's been in my head for so long I feel like I'm already cooking in it.

That seems to be how I envision ours being used (but wondering if they will think I am crazy to impose rules to prevent the easy dumping of dirty dishes from the island to the prep sink).I can see the cereal bowls piled in there in the morning already!
It will be convenient for the cooking utensils and especially with a DW there I guess that will make sense as our "prep DW area".
Rhome-Is it awkward to carry the temporary utensils over to the clean up sink when you are finished baking? I guess you just round them up in a bowl and transport them?
Flseadog-how big is your prep sink that one day you may use it as your clean up?

Yep, just put 'em all together and move them (and hopefully have them actually make it into a dishwasher) all at once. Actually, measuring cups and things don't often have to even go in the prep sink at all...Only things that get gooey or drip. Most things just sit in place on the counter and get rounded up for the dishwasher when finished. It's usually naturally worked out that a bowl will serve as a catch all for the utensils I'm finished using. It's never been awkward for me...But the kids don't always do it, so it seems they aren't always liking or remembering that one extra step. --But, too bad, they will have to learn...It's one of the things that makes me crazy and I will not ignore. I DO NOT WANT dirty dishes in 2 areas, period. It may be a downside of having a large kitchen, but there are so many plusses, no one better complain! :-)

You will find it harder, I think, to enforce having no dirty dishes waiting in that area with a dishwasher right there, although there's no real excuse for anything to hit the sink...but should just go straight in the dw. I did the separated dishwashers in our last house (I probably told you that story during your layout revisions) and I wasn't going to deal with that again. It didn't work for us -at all.
