Adding molding AFTER cabs are installed?

So my only major kitchen regret is that the cabs stop only a few inches from the ceiling. I have no idea why neither the KD or my GC didn't mention that I could simply add a few more inches of molding so they would reach the ceiling and I would not be stuck with the huge dust trap and the odd look of only being a few inches short. Can I still add molding or would it be too late? Just wondering.

Our molding was added and finalized after the cabs went in. How many inches do you have? Maybe talk to your KD or GC about what you could order that would fit and be to your liking?

What's the overlay of the cabinetry? You can always add crown moulding afterwards, though if there's not enough room to face-nail it (there are some true full overlay cabinets that only have 1/4" reveal at the top), you'll have to attach a separate nailer to the top.

Depending on how level your ceiling is and how much wiggle room you have on the face of the cabinet for following the contours in the ceiling, you MAY need to do a double stack moulding (carrier moulding first, then a smaller crown.)

Thank you scrapinsal-I had my painter do the painting and I did the glazing- he did sand and fill all of it-it was trial and error and ended up actually spackling to really give it the piano finish I wanted. I think there has to be a product out there that is better/easier to fill the grain-hopefully someone out there will tell all! Debbie- thank you- I wanted what I had seen at the showrooms - it is a personal thing- I didn't fill-in the insides of the doors-when I get my camera up and running again I'll snap a close up of both sides- It totally changes the whole feel of the cabinet when the grain is filled- My painter was psyched when he didn't have to do the inside! We had oak in all of our houses and I was just really sick of it!- I'm going to attempt my bathroom next too- I may have my painter do the doors again though- he has a paint sprayer set up in his garage -I'll ask him if it would make a big difference if I used a brush or fine roller-I just really liked how he did these- wait, what am I thinking -it's freezing here in Chicago-he can't paint in the garage....

It is made by Armstrong. 25 year warrenty. I forget the exact name but it is a black walnut. I was deciding between that and an Italian walnut which had more red in it. I had originally decided on Amendiom engineered wood and Oro Travertine for my entry way. Then Lowe's gave me a quote three times higher than their original (unfortunately verbal) quote. Had to go back to square one in one day and choose something different. I am extending it out to my living/dining room area, so I couldn't afford the engineered wood. I was heartbroken. It took me forever to choose the flooring. I loved the Amendiom wood. What depth it had. It was gorgeous. What a difference in looks between the engineered wood and the laminate. It still makes me wince. Couldn't afford to do the Travertine either, so I am getting tile. I am sick about that as well. However, the $ will only go so far and that is it!

Beautiful cabinets! I noticed the color difference in the crown molding only after you pointed it out, but I'm not especially observant about those things. it would bug me now that I notice it. Do you by chance use Reveal lightbulbs? My friend recently had her kitchen painted a lovely stone gray, but under the Reveal light, it looked positively pink! Once she changed the lightbulb, all was good. As far as inside the doors go, my cabinets just arrived today (eeee!!!) and the inside is as perfectly smooth as the outside. My are stained, not painted, though, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. I know exactly what you mean about getting chills from certain surfaces. I can't touch (or even think about!) unfinished terra cotta. A friend gave me a beautiful glazed salt dish/lid set but the lid part and the top of the dish both had a ring of un-glazed terra cotta. When they came together, I would nearly throw up (I can barely even type it!) lol. I had to give it away.

I added floor trim below all of my cabinets. It was a simple job. You could do this and also add trim along the edges of the cabinet. What I would do though is cut a panel to fit and then add trim too. An 1/8" thick panel would be better than veneer. Just washing the floor is going to have water seep into your cabinet wood. I also used clear sealant to keep water from floor to cabinet base. Not much, just enough to make a seal and be able to remove if necessary.

Well you certainly can't add it BEFORE cabinets are installed! :P

As long as you can match the cabinets (or don't need to), it can be done. Sounds like it would be a good idea!

Thanks for the suggestions. I am going to talk to my KD and find out how this can be done. We already have molding there so it would be a double molding.

Pektel had me thinking. Is the nailer the L- shaped wood that sits on the top of a full overlay cab and you nail the moulding into it? For some reason, the full overlay doors seem to show a shadow between the door and the moulding in lots of pictures. It almost looks like a line. My cabinet man insists that I need to use the L-shaped half-box with Executive full overlays or the carpenters will go crazy with an old ceiling, but I hate that shadow look. Is there any way to avoid that look? You never see it on inset cabinets, but my kitchen is too tiny for them. Thank you!

I was left with about 4 inches above our full overlay cabinets. Actually, due to the ceiling it was 4" in some places but less than that in others. I wanted something very plain for the molding to cover up this area. What we ended up doing was putting in a nailer strip and then laying a solid peice of flat stock wood on top of the cabinet frame and nailed it into the nailer. The top was finished with a peiced of cove where the flat stock and ceiling meet. I'm not sure of the shadow you mention. I dont' see anything like that on mine.

CKGM - our molding was just installed - we had to wait til we finished the electrical.
Our bottom trim will go in after the backsplash - was supposed to be today but deferred til tomorrow....
