Seams in laminate countertop for island - OK or bad idea - Help!
Comments (10)We had our laminate counters pre fabbed for us, with Wilsonart HD, but we did the install ourselves. To get the seams tight we had to place glue between the two pieces being joined and then there are miter bolts beneath the counters that are tightened to pull the two sections together to get a very tight seam. In our particular pattern you really have to look to see the seams. Solid color laminate will show the seam more easily, but some patterns are barely noticeable. I've had laminate countertops in all but one of my 7 homes in the last 30 years and never ever had a problem with seams and laminate lifting. Nor have I had any ugly seams. As a mom to 4 kids (now grown and gone), trust me there were plenty of spills on my laminates through the years. They all got wet!!! Never had any seams lifting. My biggest problem with laminate is that it's not heat resistant or scratch resistant, although the newer laminates like my new Wilsonart HD is pretty tough and difficult to scratch. If you're doing a solid color laminate I don't think seams would look very nice on your island which may be the focal point of your kitchen. But if you're doing a pattern, i think you'll be fine....See MoreWhat counter top for a 14+ foot island?
Comments (21)We did concrete for our kitchen and large island. We poured in place. Ours we left rustic because it fit our style but concrete can be finished in many different looks. The edge forms we used were the square edge but there were other options available. I love ours. We just got our CO today so haven't "used" them yet but they sealed very nicely and any liquid just beads up....See MoreCounter tops for extra long island (seam or change of material)?
Comments (20)ugh.... we are just at this point now and realized that our new counter/breakfast bar is 12' with the sink cutout dead center. My wife is stuck on an undermount and we really wanted granite... we will, of course, be getting a few fabricators to bid it. But is it feasible to do the seam with a cutout at the seam? The front edge of the sink seems a bit vulnerable to me. Also the current layout has the dishwasher adjacent to the sink and I guess we'd need to get the cabinet built with a support at the seam. If we can seam at the sink it would be small, just the length of the front setback (breakfast bar transitions to countertop there)... how well does the bullnose normally line up on a seam? Do they polish it on-site? Are we better off getting used to NOT granite? The 12' counter is not negotiable in our design....See MoreCounterTop slab seams/termination?
Comments (2)"L" tops in stone with a pronounced linear grain always create a challenge. 1 option is to cut the corner seam at a 45 and grain match as close as possible across the seam. sometimes this works great but it takes more stone to make the 45 degree seam. 2nd option is to put an appliance garage in the corner to mask the grain transition. 3rd option is a standard seam and just realize the best compromise is with the flow of the movement running parallel to the walls which necessitates an abrupt transition in the corner....See Moresjhockeyfan325
