need help with supporting granite over dishwasher overhang
Comments (13)I really appreciate your help Annkh, Hollysprings, and Trebuchet :) So, the thread I linked to below clarified a lot for me! The dishwasher isn't installed yet and I wasn't 100% clear on the installation requirements. I learned a few things: a. the dishwasher opening needs to be exactly 23-5/8" wide in order to prevent noise issues b. the dishwasher needs to be installed with no gap between its top and the countertop What that means is - 1. I cannot use the 20x20 L brackets mounted on the back wall because they would cause an unacceptable 1/2" gap on top of the dishwasher (noise issues) 2. I probably should not use cleats on the sides, because that would create gaps beside the dishwasher sides, which could lead to noise issues. That leaves an additional panel on the left hand side (bracketed to the wall/floor) as the only solution that will create an acceptable dishwasher install *and* countertop support. Now I have to evaluate how to deal with the resulting asymmetry (more panel on the left hand side of the dishwasher) and figure out if I still have enough hinge clearance on the left hand side of the fridge. Trebuchet - thank you for the instructions on how to attach a cleat to 5/8" particleboard - that is very useful info that I will use elsewhere in the kitchen install :) Annkh - I have room at the back, not the sides. Hollysprings - bingo with your comment on how gaps will affect dishwasher install. Here is a link that might be useful: Help with noisy Miele Diamond?...See MoreGranite overhang question
Comments (12)I was getting an estimate on a counter the other day and mentioned that I was considering going to a 2' overhang so I had slightly deeper counters to work on, and the salesperson said he did not recommend it. I know others have just said "its up to you, whatever you want to do", so I was surprised. He said it interferes with drawers. Maybe like not having full extension drawers? I don't, so it might make it worse, and it might defeat the purpose if you do. I am not sure it would matter enough not to do, though, if I still want it. Would 1" extra overhang over the drawers make such a big difference? I never had full extension before, either. Sue...See MoreNewbie with question: crazy granite sink overhang?
Comments (13)It is not right, IMO. I don't know if it can be fixed easily, but that's not your problem. When we had our bathroom redone without the benefit of GW a few years ago, we had an expensive solid surface put around the tub/shower area. After it was all done, I noticed that the faucet and spout and shower head did not line up. Well, I thought, not great, but what can they do now? The holes are cut, slab is ruined, and it will take forever to get another one made. It's all done. When I was getting kitchen quotes, I mentioned it as an example of a bad contractor, and one of the guys I talked to told me that the beauty of solid surface is that you can effectively "cut and paste" it and it could have been fixed. So I learned (the hard way) that you shouldn't assume that the fix can't be done or is too difficult, it's not your problem. They have to make it right. I get mad very time I take a shower. Don't get mad every time you use your sink. Complain. 3/4", even 1/2" is not correct for a negative reveal. Oh and they did drill and grind my granite in my kitchen a little bit while they were installing it, and they were very careful to clean up. It can be done. Isn't there a stone installer from Arizona on here? He should know if they could fix it in place. Good luck!...See MoreGranite overhang/measurement questions
Comments (3)What's the overhang on the working side of your island, and/or the overhang on any cabinet runs where stools will NOT be placed? 1-1/2" from cabinet frame; 3/4" from the door/drawer front. What's the overhang over your dishwasher? Does your dishwasher sit flush with your cabinet doors? Approx 1/2" overhang from DW ... so it does not sit perfectly flush (i'd never noticed this before). What is the overhang on the sitting side of your island (for those with space for a bar/counter stool or 2)? 15" from the door front. In a previous kitchen we had 12" and found that to be fine also. Lastly - how much space do you have between your island and the opposite working area? At the narrowest - mine is 36" between the range knobs and the opposite island cabinet. Since the range knobs stick out, the rest of the area is more like 38". Not that I can do anything about it - but then when you add the granite overhang, it just eats up space. Ours is 42" counter edge to counter edge. We had our island bumped back 6" in our recent reno to give us the 42" space, but pre-reno it was 36" and that was totally fine. In fact, it felt so weird and sooooo far away when I first started using the kitchen post-reno. :) It feels perfect now, you get used to what you have. 36" felt perfect when we had it, so I'm sure you will be okay. Can anyone put my mind at ease? Did it work? :-)...See Moremarbles
