Backsplash for wall with one cabinet - help needed

I am installing white subway tile in my kitchen, and I am unsure how to handle a wall that has one cabinet on it.

The left side of the cabinet is near a doorway, the right side of the cabinet is close to the bar (and sink)area.

Please see the 3 pics in the link provided to see the distance from the cabinet and countertop to the door side and the bar side.

Why can't you put subway tile there just like the rest of the backsplash? Is there anything on the other side of the bar area? Maybe a pic with a wider view would help...

The bar side opens to our living room and eat-in kitchen area. It is an open area with a sink and counter over the dishwasher. (I'll add a pic of it later)

I plan on doing the subway tile under this cabinet, but I'm not sure how to handle the ending on both sides of the cabinet. On the doorside, do I just run the bksplash to the end of the wall -- even though the cabinet and countertop don't go that far OR should I end it with the countertop or cabinet - if so, which one? On the bar area side, I'm not sure whether to stop at the cabinet and have that small, small area of wall showing between the cabinet and the green countertop or just butt the tile right up next to the green countertop...

Since it is such a small area, I think each side is important to get right -- for the eye... :)

The chimney goes up to the ceiling but the cabinets don't. There are several things you can do. You can tile all the way to the ceiling and do a decorative edge at the sides of the tile to finish it. That way the edge continues up. You can shape the tile so that it makes a triangle (without the peak) or arch above the hood, that narrows at the top behind where the chimney goes through the ceiling. This would probably be more attractive, but takes better tiling skills to pull off well. You could tile above the cabinets as well as the whole wall behind the stove. That might look excellent! Or you could go full on artsy and end the tiling below the top of the cabinets with an irregular edge (shaped like waves, flames, or whatever). Or go something like 15" above the top of the hood, following the shape of the top of the canopy. You can do all kinds of different things, but I wouldn't stop the tiling in a straight line at the top of the cabinets. That would look like someone goofed on the measurements. Just about anything else will look intentional, and can be made to work.

I think the problem here is it sounds like the base wall is lath and plaster. Removing ONLY the part between the counter top and cabinets is a bit of a challenge. If it were sheet rock it would be a "no brainer" to remove. That is probably the reason why previous owners did such a patch job on the wall in the first place. I'd look into removing any wood and replacing that with sheetrock, then using the proper sheet rock mud or plaster, filling in all and giving it a good skim coat. That is what I would do so it could be painted, I would not even try to tile over the patch job you described. Like Bill pointed out, you are unlikely to end up with a flat enough surface to get a good tile job unless you use very small tiles. While you volunteered to set tiles, is repairing/rebuilding the wall something you even want to deal with? For me, setting the tiles is always the easy part of the job - in remodeling projects, preparing the surface so it is suitable to put tiles on is usually were all the work is.

Prices are pretty reasonable. What about that milk green color? will it work? maybe with some garnet pieces sparingly mixed in. And would be quite beautiful in your kitchen, in this small scale size. And you don't need to do anything with the countertop, it is fine and works well as it is. Just a few more places to look outside of Lowes, and you might find something you really like that preserves what you already have in place. As far as adding another strong element(ie Tin Tiles? ?) to the stone and wood and gypsum and upholstered surfaces all around your kitchen living area. Your appliances are metal, so your backsplash would be fine if you liked a pressed tin tile, and your sink faucet might be chrome? and your sink might be porcelain, which is fine with tile and countertops of formica. So it's mainly about the color and the size of the pattern and diminutive would be better since the scale of your formica pattern is small, ...or a solid tile or paint or wall paper would be fine also. It's your home, you are the one that will be enjoying it daily. :D Mother of Pearl, can be like jewelry for your kitchen.

I'll be interested to see what answers you get, as we have a similar situation. We haven't started yet and I'm just mentally planning a facelift for my kitchen, including new counter tops and tile backsplash. My thought, at this time, is that the backsplash goes with the counter not the cabinet. If there was a cabinet and no counter, you wouldn't have a backsplash. So, at this time, I plan to extend the tile to the end of the counter. I suppose once I actually choose a tile that could change, but I doubt it.

Babywhite, Could you post another photo, showing the surrounding area more? I have the same situation re: countertop extending a bit farther than the end of the upper cabinet at two points in my kitchen.

One of them involves one large double-door upper cabinet at the end, with a window above my sink to the left and a wall with french doors that continues to extend into our family room/sitting room to the right.

The other is a small (18") cabinet; on the right are my built-in wall ovens. To the left, there is a doorway, with no door or trim that leads to a short hallway toward front foyer. This is nearly identical to what you have posted, but I think that the absence of trim around the doorway might make it a bit easier to decide, since it minimizes the number of changes in finshes. in one area.

Anyway, I think it would help to see an overall picture of the area, in addition to the close-ups, to understand the context better. I'm not very good figuring out what I'm seeing in tight shots like this. What is the dark surface to the right of your cabinet?
