Natural fiber rugs for kitchen...

Thanks for all of the help from this forum. We are just finishing up and getting ready to move in a week or so. Although, I'm excited to have pine floors in my kitchen but I would like to put down a few rugs to protect the floors by the range and sink. I love the look of natural fiber- what's the best one to use in the kitchen? Seagrass? Jute? Sisal? I'm going to try to get them on overstock and I know they will get dirty so I plan on replacing them every few years.

We are usually barefoot so we are also looking for something that not too rough.

Another random question, we have a few salvaged wood shelves in the kitchen. Although I love the look, they are a little rough and I would love to put a clear plastic shelf liners that stay put but disappears. Any recs??

You're best off toes testing the rugs you get in the store. I wouldn't want to go barefoot on either jute or sisal, and I have tough feet. Seagrass might be okay. Frankly, tightly knotted wool pile would be easier to clean and more toe friendly. Seagrass is also the most alergy friendly.

i would look into your choices and find out how they need to be maintained. you can expect any of those would need to be sent out and cleaned professionally. i had a very silly french-made rug in my old kitchen and i sent it out for cleaning 3x a year. the truth is it needed to be cleaned a lot more often than that but it was expensive and i was being cheap! this time around i'm sticking to something i can wash at home or at least be able to take to a a laundromat. good luck!

I have a seagrass rug in my DR that is surprisingly tough, stain resistant (at least long enough for you to run and get a towel), but not soft underfoot. I just bought a jute rug for the LR. It's soft underfoot, but I don't know about cleanability yet or even how durable it is. However, for the price of these rugs, I would still consider using them in a family room, especially if they are going to take a beating. I paid $350 for a 9x12 jute rug (the soft one). You could put it in a family room, flip it over when one side starts to look bad, then toss it when the other side's done, and have $$$ left over to buy a new one, all for the price of a fabric rug. On the other hand, you might want to consider an oriental design if you have kids. I used an inexpensive wool oriental rug in our DR when the kids were growing up, for 18 years in fact. It hid everything. It was a dark, busy pattern. You'd never know a whole can of orange soda got spilled on it at some point. It cleaned well.

Thanks to everyone for all your advice. 1) I looked into Smart Strand. It appears Home Depot carries it but under a different name. It looked quite nice-- much nicer than a patio rug-- however it was a little expensive for me (around $4 per square foot--$600+ just for material not counting the cost of binding) considering that I don't know for sure whether I'd be able to get any future smells out or not. (Yes, I am cheap, or as I prefer to think of it, "thrifty".) My husband and I were thinking about it, though. 2) I will ask the vet about Kitty Prozac. My problem cat isn't Siamese --he's just an insecure baby. Ironically, our other cat *is* part Siamese. She is not possessive, just full of self-confidence and has never, ever had an "accident". 3) I'll also look into Fizzion cleaner in the future. That's one I haven't tried. Other research I've done suggests that polypropylene or olefin WITHOUT a jute backing is best material in a generic sense. Apparently jute tends to hold odors. Finally though-- here's what I've settled on: I looked up my old Overstock order for the existing stinky rug to see exactly what it's specs were. The rug is three years old. To my amazement, Overstock still carries it and it's on sale for $225. This is a 10' x 13 rug--- big. At that price it's a no-brainer. Especially since I really like the existing rug. It doesn't look or feel like a cheap rug, IMO. I am also getting a good felt pad to put underneath. My theory is that a felt pad will soak up excess fluid so the rug won't absorb as much, and then I could cut bad spots out of the pad and tape new felt back in. Also I'm going to put a sheet of plastic between the pad and wood floor to protect the wood floor. Thanks again for all the advice, Ann

Another fan of the poly rugs. We bought our first ones when the kids were little and we had huge dogs and put them in the foyer, laundry room and front hall. Those things lasted for years until we got a puppy who decided that the carpet fringe was delicious and then went on to chew the rugs. We replaced them with newer ones and when we moved gave them to the kids - they must be 20 years old by now. We bought them at Macy's, Orvis and even the big box stores. I love the look of jute and sisal but would never buy them, they do absorb dirt, crumbs and liquid and some are not comfortable when bare foot. So if you find some please report back.

I bought a seagrass runner from Overstock.com for our hallway. I find that I tend to walk to the side of it when I'm walking barefoot from bedroom to kitchen. So that may be a clue to their comfort level - although I have fairly tender feet.

They are nice looking and well made, however.

Thanks for the feedback. I've had jute in my garage and seagrass as doormats and jute feels a bit nicer underfoot. Does jute shed? There are also some great hemp rugs on overstock but I've never seem hemp IRL so I'm hesitent to do that.

Wool a wonderful natural fiber is my choice. Additionally it is naturally stain resistant due to the oils in the wool. Feels nice & you can probably get some nice choices on OS

I found an indoor/outdoor rug that is polypropelene, but looks very close to a sisal/jute at Crate and Barrel. I brought a sample square home but haven't ordered one yet (still deciding on size I need), so I can't tell you if it curls or otherwise has any problems that would not be apparent until you get it down in the house. It's not as scratchy as sisal or jute and should be a lot easier to clean (since it's poly). I've seen it in person in the store hanging (5x8 size). It's the Savannah rug, comes in a natural color and a dark greyish blackish color.
