Do you have a granite shop anywhere near you? We had a granite top made for antique record cabinet we're using for vanity. Found gorgeous piece in granite shop's "boneyard" - had 3 edges eased, two front corners slightly beveled, sink hole cut - cost $400 for 22" 1/2 x 42" top. Sink is Kohler Serif (not expensive and i love it) with Delta Victorian faucet - two or 3 times a day i go out in my garage and admire the combo :) Karen

I had bad experience with "Granite Transformations" doing our kitchen. they quoted 3,900 but my husband got it down to 3,390. we had existing tile...but supposedly their whole concept is NO DEMO. If they didnt take off the bullnose tiles the stove wouldn't fit. Fine, but they took it off everywhere. the cement was in my silverware all the drawers in my dishes and pots and pans. 2nd visit measure. 3rd visit 4wks later-install. they had measured wrong! they fogot to allow for the removal of all the bullnose. so it was even bigger and blockier and longer in places than it should have been. plus this one ledge was undercut so the wall stuck out farther, so they said they'll come back to fix that. so many ph.calls later we get the original salesman to look at it. then another appt to re-measure, that gets lost. comes back again and discusses with me in great detail of how this is going to go. 4 wks go by with 3 un-returned phone calls, they apologized saying they were waiting for the slab to come in. Now this is where I get mad. My husband takes off work to be here for the "install", and get this, the guy RE-discusses OPTIONS (with my husband)of how to fix this!! So what happened to all the decisions that I had already made? I don't know, Out the door,GONE, complete waste of MY time! they spent 4 hrs. here re-measuring and table sawing and sanding, when it was suppossed to already been measured and cut overTHERE! and just installed here. We started this in June and now its mid-October. For 2,000.bucks more we could've had this done right and look better than this huge block look. You get what you pay for and some times less than that...a horrible experience to live with.

You'd have to have another grout line on the depth. Just something else to consider (as if you don't have enough!). This is a problem with the 12x12's as well. If you look at the pic I posted up above, you'll see how I solved that problem. I "hid" the piece out front in plain sight. Instead of having the sliver in the back, I made 3" bullnose pieces as a "trim" accent to go all the way around the countertop. it works out well. They are very small. I butted each tile against the other and didn't use spacers. On the part of the counter that I use the most, the grout is always oily looking and wipes out after a few months of cleaning. I have to re-grout that section a couple of times a year. THANK YOU. Those of you who've been here a couple of years and seen me go through the arguments with people about why a small grout joint is needed, and that you can't butt the tiles together, this is the reason why. (or atleast the biggest of the several reasons)

I used Granite Transformations in my little bathroom on the countertop. I chose the pearly colored oyster instead of the granites because I had already chosen and paid for granite in the other rooms. I wish I had found them before I did my kitchen. I have no problem with it, and it looks wonderful. Except they did tell me the pearl one I chose will not hold up in a kitchen because of its properties. It is for a rarely used half bath so I wanted it and knew it would hold up fine there. My understanding from a friend who designs interiors of upscale hotels, where she uses is, is that she uses it because of its durability and ease of installation, etc. I think she probably gets a good deal on it because for her she is buying their service in quantity, sotaspeak. I have seen some of the hotels/motels in which she has used it and it looks great! It holds up well. Her husband is in the construction business and she said he felt it was a great choice. In fact, they have used it in their kitchen and one bathroom. Like me, she had already chosen granite for the other rooms before she knew about it.
