Bosch DW - 3rd rack for sippy cup lids and snack cups?

I should have stopped researching DWs before I discovered the 3rd rack in the Bosch. I had read about the cutlery tray in the Miele DWs, but I thought it would be annoying to load all the silverware in the slots. Plus, half of my silverware is plastic toddler grip stuff. Recently I came across a YouTube video of a person loading up the 3rd rack of a Bosch DW, and it occurred to me that I could possibly use this space for all the little plastic bowls, cups, lids, and reusable lunchbox pieces we have. The top rack of our current DW is always full well before the bottom rack.

Does anyone have personal experience with this? Do you think the third rack would hold a lot of this kid stuff? Clean it well? It's a lot more money than I was planning to spend on a DW, but if this feature could work for me the way I want it to, it would definitely be worth the money.

Oh, I hope so, cause I had the same idea!

I ordered a Bosch 800 Plus too...don't love the idea of putting the silverware in slots, but I am so sick of finding my son's little plastic containers and sippy cup lids and caps littered all over the dishwasher and melted into oblivion by the heating coil.

We have a Bosch DW and find that the third rack is very useful for holding all kinds of small things safely and securely.

Your salesman is only partially correct. Euro machines do not use an element to dry dishes. However you are not likely to see a difference between a "dry" dish in a Miele and GE. Both do a fine job getting things like ceramic , glass, and clay dry. Where many have probs. with the Euros in in the drying (or lack ) of plastic. Since plastics don't retain heat very well they won't dry WELL in the euros. The drying of plastics is also hindered by plastics that retain water in lips ridges, slots. ect... Things like kids bottles and sippy cup lids. Smooth plastic like plates, picnic cup dry just fine. An added benefit that seems to get lost in the wet plastic debate is that you are not limited to the top rack for plastics with the Euros and your better dishware is not getting "baked" evey cycle.

I have a lower cost Bosch DW (white, tall tub, external controls) about a year old. It replaced a terrible Amana that sounded like a jet engine when it ran. I got really tired of not being able to hear the TV in the next room! The pros: pretty quiet, seems to clean well. Dries okay. Love how simple the controls are. Really like the stainless interior. Doesn't seem to need a food disposal after all (I was skeptical). Cons: SMELLS BAD. I rinse my dishes really well anyway before loading but there's something about the interior (maybe the stainless steel?) that traps odors big time. It smells like something is dead in there and I'll have to run a load that's not even full just to eliminate the stink (the "rinse" cycle doesn't help all that much). I've never had that happen in any dishwasher before. It happens fairly consistently in this Bosch. Now I rinse everything about 4 times before putting it in b/c I'm paranoid! I have check the food grate thing at the bottom of the DW all the time, but that's never been the source of the smell... FWIW, I went to a neighbor's house yesterday to see her kitchen and she has the stainless version of my Bosch DW. She doesn't like hers because she says it smells AFTER the clean cycle has run (never happened to me) and that the dishes don't dry at all so they have to crack the door for awhile before unloading. That hasn't happened to me either. One more con - a design flaw. Bosch made the grate openings on the bottom rack so large that you can't put smaller items (like cups or small bowls) on the bottom. Too bad - because you can put plastic anywhere since there's no heating element. Poor design, IMO. I deal with a lot of small cups and sippy cups with three small kids so that has been annoying for me. Overall, it works as it should and even though I have gripes, I'm not replacing it in the new kitchen since it's so new...

I've got 4 soon to be 5 kids so we have lots of plastics around here. I can't imagine not having the heated dry function on my dw. I run it twice a day a lot of times so I would find it annoying if I had to wait for everything to dry. That being said some of the plastic stuff does still need to air dry a bit and I just stack it on the counter for a while. Is it an elegant solution? No, but my life with young kids isn't very elegant right now so I'm not too concerned. I do have a cabinet to put water bottles in to dry with their lids off though and in my new kitchen there is a deep drawer dedicated to tupperware type stuff and another for water bottles. As far as the heated dry function warping plastics, ours doesn't seem to hurt the plastic stuff if I put it on the top shelf. The ziploc throwaway type food containers I do wash by hand though because they do warp in the wash but that's the only thing I wash by hand.

I wanted to post an update now that we've run more loads through our new Kitchenaid DW. Normally six weeks might not be much of an update, but posts scroll off so fast (or just get lost these days by the server, LOL) that I thought it would be good to do this before it disappears forever. We are still running the KA a lot more often than our (mediocre) old Kenmore/GE. The fact that it cleans the cookware, which our old DW did not do well at all, means that a lot more big items are put in, which requires running it more often. We still have the issue with the soap dispenser not opening on rare occasions. Again, this very seldom happens, so I've been unable to figure out the "why?" The DW runs such hot water, however, with that stainless tub holding in the heat so much better than the old DW's plastic tub, that the loads have come out almost completely clean even without soap! Egg yolk residue and mashed potatoes are a bit difficult for the DW, although it's a total champ on grease and baked-on casserole crusts. I now soak the plates that have the egg yolk or potato residue with a little water, for a few minutes (while I'm putting glasses and silverware into the DW, for example). Then I load them into the DW - no scrubbing necessary, just a little hydration. The loads have all been on Regular or Pro Scrub cycles. I used the Heavy Duty cycle once but didn't find it was any more effective than the Pro Scrub. Virtually everything that has needed a little extra washing "ooomph" has fit into the two rows on the lower rack where the Pro Scrub cycle is aimed. On those rare occasions when an item is just too big for the Pro Scrub racks, then the Heavy Duty cycle is useful, while placing the item full-face-down on the lower rack. I still do miss the height of my old DW - there's one or two things that simply will not fit into the KA unless I lay it face down which takes up an entire rack. But in all other respects, the KA works like a champ and has made a huge difference in less time and effort spent on daily clean-up. With our old DW, I seldom ran it more than two or three times a week. There was so much it couldn't clean well, or that were too awkwardly shaped to fit. I really appreciate the flexible loading of the KA racks. We have so many odd or large items that are easy to fit into this DW. With the KA, I can run it twice a day because I know it will clean just about everything. Drying: I only have to wait 2 hrs 15 min after I push the Start button, to open up the DW and almost everything is dry (and hot to the touch!). If I wait 4 hours then the condensation drying makes everything completely dry. The one exception is the curved rims on plastic tupperware-type containers. This is because I load the plastic containers upside-down; if I loaded them on their sides the rims would drain, but conversely make it harder for the interior to drain well. I usually unload everything else first, then take the containers out and shake the water from the rims into the sink. They air-dry completely in an hour or so, and then get put away. My nephews Bosch has so far performed very well for them (its only 1 yr old, though) but they are a little unhappy with the smaller interior and long cycle times. We spent close to the same amount of money, but the KA has been a good fit for us. Were very satisfied with it, and hope it lasts, for at least a few years. And yes, we did opt for an extended warranty, just in case.

I have the least expensive DW in the Bosch 800 series. It doesn't have the 3rd rack, but it has a couple of flip down mini-racks on the sides of the upper rack. I can put small cups under the mini-racks, then put plastic lids, bowls, or cups on top. I also put longer utensils there. My DW also has a small cutlery rack for the upper rack that would be useful for the little plastic stoppers in sippy cups or plastic kid spoons that you don't want in the bottom rack. I think these features are available on lower priced Bosch dishwashers, so you don't have to go to the expense of getting one with the 3rd rack.

This is exactly why I ordered this exact DW.. We don't move in till next week, so I don't have any hands on experience yet, but I will let you know!

I also have just the flip down 3rd rack, along one side of the top rack, and that is exactly what I use it for, sippy cup lids and small cups and bowls. I love it! Also, the annoying silverware slots fold over and can hang down the sides, so you don't have to use them. Usually a section of my silverware holder has sippy cup parts, too.

Thanks everyone! Maybe they need to start marketing their DWs a bit differently! Lol. I'm so glad that I'm not totally crazy for thinking about using the top 3rd rack for kid supplies. It seems like the small plastic stuff is neverending, and the baby is still only on bottles and refusing solids; adding another kid to sippy cups and snack traps will be crazy.

A little spin off from my original question, but I'll try posting in here before I start a whole new thread. Does anyone know about how much a custom panel costs? My builder is on vacation for the next week and a half so I can't ask him. I'm wondering if it would even be an option for us to get a panel ready DW. I can get an idea about the price of the DW, but what about the actual panel from the cabinet company?

Mom23Es - I have one of these dishwashers and I think you'll love it.

My boys are too old to have worried about sippy cup lids when I bought ours. I loved it because it keeps the silverware separate and it gets cleaner.

But, we do have a little foster son placed with us now and when he came, he bought sippy cups back into our lives. :)

The shallow top rack is perfect for those lids and even the valves that come out of them. They can't flip over and they fit just great.

We just got the Thermador Star Sapphire dishwasher which is apparently a rebadged Bosch. I love the top rack so much more than I thought I would. I do put my silverware in it. It's not difficult at all. It just drops right in. And I find that it's much easier to gather the silverware for unloading than it was with the basket. It's more ergonomic or something. I'm able to put things away much faster. I also put miscellaneous items like the single measuring cups and spatulas, etc up there. I love the darned thing.

I have a third rack on a KA KUDE series. I love it. I have occasionally put sippy cup lids up there but they can't go on edge so they take up a lot of room laying flat like that. I think they're better placed where they can go on edge. For an occasional one, but your mileage won't be very high that way, if you follow.

I'm past the heavy-sippy-cup years now, but in the thicket of them I just bought plastic open-square baskets for them; tossed em all in and the baskets sat on the second shelf. I think that will use your space better, plus you can lift it all out for decanting but if using the 3rd shelf you'd have to go one-by-one.

We have one of the older Miele models with a third rack, but I adore it for bottle and sippy cup parts---we wash bottle rings, nipples, teething rings, all the teeny pieces of sippy cups, etc. in that section and it's perfect. It has different depths in different sections, which is really nice if the Bosch also has that option.

We have the older Miele as well, and the sippy cups are from grandkids/cousins, but it works well.

And I recently heard my "drop-it-wherever-on-the-first-available-flat-surface" husband telling friends that he LOVEs the cutlery rack, and it is the best part of the dishwasher...

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha My life is complete.
