Tile/Design Scheme for older farmhouse kitchen???

I'm renovating a portion of a kitchen to include new rustic oak hardwood flooring, counter & oven tiled backsplash, but need to keep the dark stained pine cabinetry, cream laminate counters & white appliances. This is going to be a rental property, but could someday be our own place. I'm torn about what direction to go in? Thinking either white subway tile w/yellow & cream polished onyx (1/2" squares on a 12" square sheet from Home Depot) OR going neutral rustic with a textured stone tile to coordinate with the wood cabinets & beamed ceilings. The appliances are new white, floor is light oak & don't know about wall color. I found it difficult with cream countertops & white appliances to pick a look. Help.

What about a simple checkerboard (diagonal or straight) using inexpensive 4x4 tiles? Very attractive, economical, and perfectly-suited to a simple rustic farmhouse without being easily dated. If there's enough color difference, even a white & cream tile combination could work. Or either white or cream with another accent color.

Kohler makes one. Not easily found, and consequently not that cheap. Around $1400 if memory serves. How about using your vintage tile for the backsplash and using a solid stone slab for the countertop? That would give you a lot more freedom of design and eliminate those irritating and hard to clean grout lines on the countertop.

wow- Sophie. Thank you for that information. I will try to avoid using the term 'farmhouse' if it offends folks but I think you could make a similar argument for almost every post on houzz so it seems to me a bit irrelevant for this type of public forum. I have designers- several of them- with great reputations in their respective fields. Unfortunately, since everyone is so busy, if you want attention to details, I have found it is essential to review all drawings myself (civil, structural, architect, and even the geotech and survey) and look for issues. I have found an overabundance of them- some very serious- that I have personally corrected probably saving about $65,000 at this point with no change in the house design. For this particular design issue (ceiling height), I was not presented with the option of exploring different ceiling heights or given a preference for whether or not I like large crown molding etc. The 10' ceiling was plunked down by an architect on the drawings and now it is near impossible to change as we have our permits and in our city- changes are not only expensive but would mean a return to the planning department and public review. My research and questions and legwork are definitely making my project much better than leaving everything up to designers - nobody cares about 'your' project as much as you do.

Maybe, push peninsula even further back to give more space within. keep chairs with people out of walk way. need panel on right side of microwave hood. Keep same spacing on both sides of window to keep balanced symmetry around window. Stoves that close to corner is not ideal. make sure fillers in corner are wide enough so drawers don't hit handles

Sweeby & Golddust: Thanks for your advice & I will post a photo, once I figure out where to attach it on here! I guess I'm more technology challenged vs. visually (LOL). I have purchased several single tiles, more as "samples" to see what works next tp counter, stove etc. Originally, I was thinking a matte white field/subway tile w/a nuetral taupe plain glass, alternating like you mentioned. Typically,, I go for a bit o' color, but knowing it's for rental, simple is best. I also see a lot of tumbled stone backsplashes, so I'm kinda torn. If this helps...the outside of our house is going to be Indigo with a bright red metal roof & cool old stained glass/wood front door, the bathroom has white beadboard, neutral vinyl & warm brownish gray on the walls. I've read your outside is a window to your interior?! Not sure many people follow that.

I've attached 2 photos of the original kitchen we are in the midst of renovating. We are keeping the cabinets wood & laminate for now & putting down new oak hardwood flooring & some kind of tile backsplash behind counter & stove area. All appliances are brand new white, which has caused me this dilemma, since the counters are cream, not white. Do I go rustic tumbled stone or neutral glass with white tile accents? SEE PHOTOS PLEASE!

In my opinion, keep it simple. The cream and white will look fine together if the elements tie in somewhere else (like a cream colored wall with white tile). You already have white with the knobs. You could do ceramic white subway tile, or a checkerboard white and cream (also ceramic) tile. Cheap and cheerful, and in perfect harmony with the simple rustic style.
