Philosophical question: how much can we mix flooring?

We live in a 1971 colonial with 3 1/4" blonde oak flooring throughout, with the exception of our foyer, hall and kitchen. These are all linoleum, which we are replacing with slate as a part of our kitchen remodel.

Because the oak in our family room is in poor shape, and because we are moving doors and removing a wood-burning stove, the oak in that room will have to be replaced. Herein lies our problem. We can't find oak that matches the original stuff exactly, and we don't like it anyway. Should we go with something that is pretty close, or go with something entirely different that we actually like? In that case, it would be 5" Brazilian cherry. However, it means that the ground floor of our house would have three different floorings (slate, oak, cherry.) Is that too much of a mish mosh?

At no time will the oak and cherry touch each other, but they will be in view of each other.

It's not in our budget (or our stomachs) to replace ALL the oak with cherry.

What would you do? Thanks.
