Anybody going to NYC to see House Beautiful's Kitchen of the Year

Just curious if anybody is going to see the kitchen Jeff Lewis designed for House Beautiful? It's in Rockefeller Center, but only for 5 days! July 19-23.

Well, as someone who here's already, I'm thinking this might offer us a great opportunity to have another NYC GW TKO gathering! What say you? If you're in the NYC metro area or planning on being in the City at that time, would you like to visit the House Beautiful show kitchen together and maybe do a lunch/brunch or something after? If so, post here!

ms minnamouse, you sure you have a Kolkwitzia? There is nothing evergreen about this big, rangy, caning shrub, even in warmer zones than yours :-) blondell, if you can provide sufficient summer irrigation, there are various compact rhododendrons and perhaps even pieris that could work for you and provide spring flowers. Otherwise, boxwoods, Japanese hollies, euonymus and dwarf conifers will provide year round greenery but no significant flowering. Visit a local garden center to see what they have on hand that will be hardy in your area. Be sure to tell them the amount of sunlight this area will receive to get the best suggestions for your specific situation.

yep, used soap. I wish that there were digital cameras around 25 years ago....boy would you love to see the photos. There was a clown statue with his pants area that stuck out--possibly a planter or utensil holder, a metal round tray with indentations that had the flowers of PA in them, (my dh thought maybe it was a tray to hold 6 Budweiser cans), a used sponge, His & Hers mugs (you know the ones with the antique cars on them), a chip & dip bowl (the dip bowl that clipped to the edge of the chip bowl). My Dad, who was very sick (passed away about 5 weeks later) was so mad--these were good friends of his. He was sure it was a joke when we told him about it, he thought that there must have been a check or something...but no. We took lots of photos of my dh putting the peach basket out at the curb for the trash, the clown hanging out the top. Well, it was certainly the most memorable gift I got that day!

I was in Utah 8 or 9 years ago, assisting at a yoga retreat in the mountains. For 100 miles+ around, the mountains were dead. Like Mt. St. Helen's. Seems some infestation of something got into the trees, pines, I think, and they were going to cut it out. A very small, containable area. Environmentalists got involved and stopped them, and the bugs razed miles and miles and miles of trees. They had to bury the trees, because evidently they couldn't be burned on such a mass scale. I guess they couldn't even use the wood! I'm an environmentalist where growing, live things are concerned, both plant and animal, but that was a very short-sighted group and that devastation can be laid directly at their feet. In the meanwhile, where do I get those blue-woodmaking bugs? Or are they a bad bug? Should I just settle for the gorgeous lumber? :)

When I see chandeliers like this ANYWHERE, but especially in a kitchen, I always want to know how often the help comes in to clean. I've cleaned a crystal chandelier (once!) and said never again. To keep it sparkly, one must remove each bobble one at a time and clean it with ammonia, dry it and re-attach it to the chandelier. In a kitchen, this would be a task that would have to be done at least monthly. The whole thing is just OTT. Kitchens and bathrooms are rooms one uses multiple times a day and must have a degree of practicality where cleaning is concerned. Unless one lives in an English manor house, why on earth would they want such high ceilings that will be difficult to keep clean? I love polished metals (including brass) in a kitchen but the brass on the marble is just WAY too busy. Trophy kitchen for trophy wife with trophy twins? Okay - that WAS snarky but really....

Ooh, ooh, ooh! Is that next week or the week after (I lose trakc of days/dates in the summer1)? I might be able to make it--keep me posted marthavila. I need to make a trip to Union Square Mkt so this would be a good excuse to head into the city!

Caroline won't be back up here 'til December. I know they're heading out west (Seattle and CA?) sometime soon.

I don't know if rococogurl will be around at all, but I can email her a link to this thread in case she doesn't see it here herself.

Let me know what raynag and charlikin say about getting together and maybe we can get this to happen!

I am going to try to go on friday the 23rd, possibly at 10:30 when they open, and will hopefully be meeting another GW'er there as well. I think both of us would be game for a lunch after if it happens (I hope you don't mind me including you - you know who you are!)

That sounds great, Cat Mom! Of course we've got to have Roc in on this!! I'll send her an email as well. And, Sadie, I think you may have a plan. BTW, did you know I'm a Brooklyn gal too? I'd really welcome the chance to meet up with another GW TKO from our borough. The more the merrier!

So what are we saying? Friday, 7/23 or what?

Sorry I cannot join in. Have always had such fun meeting everyone in the past but it's just a bad week for me with other commitments. Fall will be much better. But have fun!

turns out I can't go! why is it only for 5 flippin' (no pun intended) days? ugh. Friday would have been lovely though, but we are actually heading up to see dd the next morning (Saturday) and she lives right over the border in CT. If we could have taken off Friday we could have stayed overnight Friday too and made it a 3 day weekend. rats.

I'm thinking this was a great idea in theory but tough to execute- especially with only a week to do so. For that reason, I'm also thinking Roc's idea of a gathering in the fall makes more sense. Folk will be back from vacations then, we'll have plenty of time to get the word out and for metro area TKOs to see it, more time to figure out the best meeting place and align schedules, etc. How about it?

I didn't realize that Garden Web menbers actually got to meet each other! How often does this happen? From these posts it sounds like some of you have been doing this a while. I would be up for a fall get together too.
