Sinks, who knew there was so much to know?

I'm nervous about the sink issue after reading all this forum has to offer. My contractor showed me the options that "come with" the granite and I don't like them. I wanted a single bowl, stainless sink to fit a 30" cabinet and one that isn't very deep. After reading this morning, I'm afraid the only option I've see from the granite folks has a shiny rather than a brushed finish and is not as long as I'd like and deeper than I want. I'm considering just buying my own sink although we're really trying to stay within our budget. Does anyone know of a good sink to recommend that would come close to what I want?

I have a Ticor single bowl sink, D-shaped, in a 27" sink cabinet. It is deeper than my old standard double bowl but the depth is actually quite nice - not as deep as the Elkay or Silgranits. Plus the rack that comes with it keeps everything off the bottom - not something I thought I cared about but I love it! I think it is brushed stainless...? Got it at Galaxy Tools for just under $200! Here's the link. My DH was skeptical that I would like a single bowl, but this thing is roomy and I love it!!

Did I mention that I love it?

I have a Linea Aqua Vienna single bowl ss undermount sink. The bowl dimensions are 28" x 16", overall it's 30" x 18". It's listed as 9" deep, but I think it's closer to 10". It is 16 gauge and has a center drain and fits in our 30" sink base cabinet.. Cost was $238. at HomeCenter.com
It doesn't come with a sink grid, but I bought a Kohler (25" x 12 3/4") K6517-ST for $48 and it fits just fine, plus it shortens up the depth about an inch. I love it!

I don't have a pic I can post right now, but I did subway tiles on a half-bath wall, combining 3 colors of tile: matte white, glossy white, and an off-white. My original reasoning for doing that was that I was going to have a toilet from 1 mfg and a sink from another, and the whites in the 2 fixtures didn't match exactly, and so I though that having several shades in the wall tiles would help soften the difference. In fact, I ended up with toilet and sink from the same mfg, so it didn't matter, but I LOVE the combination of tile colors/finishes on the wall...

This shows the countertops. The brown area is going to be butcherblock and will be a few inches lower than the rest of the cabinets. The pink and purple is the perimeter countertop I'm concerned about. I made the pink/purple areas to show where I think seam would have to be if I cant get it on the diagonal. I'm already doing a second surface, and not sure I want a third, or if I did where I would change it up. Paperstone is solid surface, and I am not aware of any problems with it chipping or flaking. Either side can be up, I'm just not sure if both surfaces will look the same. If I can cut the diagonal, and then flip one side, then there is no problem getting the entire countertop from one slab.. it's actually a perfect fit. While both sides might be nice, they might not match. I'd need an additional 2 linear ft in order to keep both "right" sides up, and have a diagonal seam. I'd have to get two smaller slabs. I'd end up with a little bit leftover I suppose there is the chance of it being not quite the same that way too.

well, hmmm, i didn't know pigs couldn't swim but it certainly stands to reason, considering how they are built. i wonder if they float?? the built-in stairs are a little too steep for piggy navigation but if there was a pig in the world who would try, it would be arnold! LOL thanks, lisa! actually, i ended up having to re-home the goats. they were just too work-intensive after my back surgery. they now live on a 30 acre pasture where they are up to their knees in grass with a whole bunch of children to spoil them. :) the dogs are well, wish i could say the same for my bluebirds. had 4 eggs hatch but the babies have been dying off one by one. i think, because the nest box is out in the open, they are simply baking in the sun. :( the pigs gets the same cookies the dogs get, they are little 1" puppy cookies. they occasionally get frosted mini wheats or seedless grapes for treats, too. the mud on arnold's behind was so thick, his tail got stuck in mid-wag! :o and, introducing the very unusual, very rare, very sought-after two-toned oinker!

Actually, it sounds like headspinning has already decided she would like one, not that she is still trying to decide. I wouldn't want to make her head spin any more than it already is. Also, depending on your set up it can be very affordable. I intially considered one because it would NOT be very expensive, since I have a bathroom sink on the other side of the same wall and there is already plumbing in place right where I would need it. Just didn't have a lot of room under the microhood. I would still do it if I ever got rid of that. Besides, I think its ok to just do something fun, or cool or pretty, if you like, too. Sue

I have a Blanco "D" shaped sink that fits in my 24" cabinet and I love it. I know you want a larger one. go to www.blancoamerica.com and do a search, you may find just what you are looking for (they also make rectangular shaped sinks). Mine has a "satin" finish, and it is not shiny.

I am interested in your comments about the Ticor s405 single bowl sink. I notice it is 9-1/2'' deep. Did you put in a garbage disposal with this sink? Were there any modifications to the height of the waste drain in order to have this sink with a disposal? How high off the floor is the center of your waste drain?

I had already purchased a sink (Blanco silgranit) by the time I started looking at granite. My fabricator gave me a sink credit of $250. Don't feel limited to what your fabricator 'gives' you, they buy them in bulk. Good luck!

JB, I can't really answer your question because we do not have a disposal - we have a septic system.

I currently have a really really shiny SS sink. Thought it would look sharp with the Absolute Black granite. Not so much. Mostly it looks scratched after 4 years of very light use (this was our vacation home so we were only here every six weeks or so for the first 3 years). If you decide on SS, go with the brushed.
