Not unconscionable at all. Sadly, 10 years is considered good these days. If you can afford new appliances, and it sounds like you can, go for it!

In our last house, we had GE appliances that all dated from 2002. The GE washer broke within two years and the repair person (who was wearing a GE uniform) called it a piece of cr*p and told me he recommended his mother never buy GE. Following the repair the washer worked until we moved in January of this year. The GE profile refrigerator died in 2010 (can't remember the problem but we were advised not to repair - maybe the motor died?). Our GE profile dishwasher was starting to make worrying sounds at the time we moved. The GE profile range was actually working well. I think 10-15 years is really about the good working lifespan of GE profile appliances of that "vintage" so replacing as they fail is probably a good option. I have trouble finding good repair people to come to our beach house - some are good, but some definitely take advantage given that we are not year-rounders...

If you want to get new appliances of your choice, I would donate the GE appliances to habitat or such and get what works for you.

No, 10 years old for the electronic type is not bad. I would still try to give them to someone in need though, not trash them. They can still tide someone over until they do break.

No experience with GE except for original fridge from house that's still in garage and still working -- nearly 20.

But the Asko washer controller board failed after 9 years and rather than repair I dumped the set. Still working but no regrets.The new ones are great and I feel it was a good move.

The 9 y.o. Viking fridge is having freezer issues. Likely will repair vs replace though I'm researching new fridges just in case. 10 years seems to be the life expectancy today, even for some high end stuff (which Viking purportedly is).

DD has a lake place built in the 60s with original GE stuff -- they are second owners. They've replaced the 2 GE fridges with Whirlpool and the GE ovens with Kenmore. She said they don't want to run back and forth for service. Very different from what they have in town kitchen -- Bulthaup/Miele/Wolf.

With repairs being difficult and if you want something to really last, try skipping the sure-fail electronics and opt for old fashioned mechanical machines. They used to last decades and probably still fare much better even today.

Yes, donating is perfect. I had a range that was in perfect condition but I wanted a double oven, and induction cooktop. My dishwasher was also in perfect condition as I mostly hand wash except for holiday meals. Our refrigerator was newish as well. I kept my refrigerator but offered my range and dishwasher to my sweet cleaning lady. She was elated as their range was broken and they were looking for something they could afford and she was able to give her older dw to her DD and used the one I gave her. She was thrilled and it made me so happy as she is very special to me. She has become a dear friend over the years.

I agree donate them to a good charity or cause.

Holly-Kay - your message reminds me so much of someone that helped us every week when the kids were small. She became a big part of our family and the kids loved her so much. She now lives with her daughter in another state and I miss seeing her.

I had GE Profile electric range/MW and fridge for 16 years...icemaker problem twice, but that's it. We remodeled and donated them, still in excellent working order after 16 years, to Habitat. We bought GE Profile again for the stove/MW because it was within budget and had the features we wanted. Yes, GE dishwasher only lasted a few years would not recommend. I think their best appiances are stoves/micros.

In my experience, old appliances (25 years ago and earlier) lasted way longer than newer ones. Ten years may be life expectancy. I'd replace them.

When we remodeled our kitchen last year, I sold our 24 year old GE electric stove. A guy with rental properties bought it for $50. Also sold a 14 year old over the range microwave to a family that was planning a remodel but weren't financially able to start it yet. Don't underestimate resale value.

Well, less than 24 hours later and I'm delighted to say we have arranged delivery and installation for Friday at our lakehouse!

Since I was replacing them anyway, I made some improvements. I much prefer D/w drawers like we have at home, so I got the FP drawers. Since the open d/w used to block traffic, this'll be a help.

And our old fridge used to protrude a few inches. I don't like the way that looks. The new one is counterdepth, and it has French doors ... both better for space and traffic. It's a Jennair and we got it for a pretty good price after rebate and because it has dings on it (it will be hidden).

I had several GE profile products. They had average to light use, and were about 10 years old. I'm in the process of replacing everything. I'd rather sell it while it has some value and put the money towards updated replacements. I think 10-15 years is about the max life of appliances.

Just as an FYI, when I replaced my refrigerator 8 years ago in preparation for our remodel and color change my previous unit was functioning fully well. The salesperson at the store warned me that the new unit may not last as long as they used more plastic parts in the mechanisms now as a way to improve energy efficiency. I don't know whether that's entirely true or not, but it makes sense to me!
