Comments (7)Yes, I grow Evans Sweet. Glad to hear that someone is bragging on it! Well, this is all I know. Dr. John Wych (sp?) was one of the earliest members of the Seed Savers Exchange. He was a dentist from Hugo, OK; Cherokee, and a member of the Presbyterian Church. He was also part owner of a circus! (Really interesting fellow!) Anyway Dr. Wych introduced a good many vegetable varieties to the SSE. Apparently he had a friend named Dr. Evans; and the two of them had a mutual hobby of developing garden varieties of vegetables, which were better than what was generally available, commercially, back in the 70s. Between the two of them, they came up with "Dr. Wych" (orange/yellow flesh) and Evans Sweet (green flesh with salmon tinted seed cavity). I received my seed from Neil Lockhart, a SSE members who has LOTS of tomatoes and apparently a good many cantaloupes. He claimed it was the best. My family loves it. Though, for this year, I just planted it last week. I have lots of seed, since I have grown it so that it is the only melon in flower. So, I tend to spread this one around quite a bit. Evans Sweet, like many cantaloupes, turns a lot lighter color when ripe and is very aromatic. Hope this helps! George...See MoreElfa sale - mix Elfa with Closet Maid or Rubber Maid components?
Comments (2)I can tell you that the slots on the standards don't always line up. They may *look* similar, but they can be 1/8 of an inch off, in spacing vertically, horizontally, etc. I bought one brand at one store for one room, and a different brand at another store for another room. I thought, oh, I'll use this extra bracket in there. Nope--wouldn't fit. (I'll admit that one of them was Closet Maid and the other was God-knows-what from my local "real" lumber/hardware store.) So check that before you make any definite plans. You can get liners for the wire-grid baskets, I thought....See MoreElfa Pantry Storage?
Comments (10)My story is exactly like california_dreamer's. My pantry closet is 22 inches wide and 30 inches deep. You can see it on the right in this photograph from the old kitchen: I purchased a "medium" Elfa tower (18 inches wide and about 69 inches high), composed of a 10-runner unit on top of a 7-runner unit. You can see a portion of it on the left in this photograph of my temporary kitchen: Most of the food stored in my pantry is unopened, so I store items horizontally in the 1-runner drawers that are only 4 inches high. I think this arrangement lets me use all of the vertical space my tiny pantry closet offers. I have a couple of 2-runner drawers for upright storage of items that might leak. I'll use the top drawers (above eye level) for lightweight, soft things, like placemats and paper napkins, that wouldn't hurt me if they fell from that height. On the top left, not visible in the photograph, I have an elfa 5-hook accessory that will let me hang aprons from the side of the tower in the remaining 4 inches of space left in the pantry closet. I envy all of you who have walk-in pantries; you are sooooo lucky. I think elfa would be a great choice because so many configurations are possible, and there are so many accessories available to enhance the utility of any configuration. With elfa, there need not be any "dead" space in any pantry. Also, I think elfa dealers offer free design assistance....See MoreElfa for the pantry
Comments (27)We've got elfa in our pantry - and our bedroom closet. Never had an issue with weight - this was probably already said, but the rail at the top and the long strips for attaching shelf holders distributes the weight against the entire wall. If I think about the clothing hanging from my closet rails - I'm certain that's a lot more weight than food in my pantry. I've loved seeing pictures from other GW elfa pantry layout. Our pantry is about to get larger and I love the additional ideas for placement of shelves. For the increased size, I'll add some elfa solid shelves and I plan to use the pantry for storing various items that no longer have a home in a cupboard (e.g., vases, extra wine glasses) and I think I'll prefer a solid shelf for some of those items....See Moremihelene
